Mr. Lunceford Boswell, an esteemed citizen- farmer of the Penfield community, died after many years of semi-invalidism. Mr. Boswell had been in failing health for the last 16 years and had been quite feeble for the last ten. Though a great sufferer and prevented by his illness from taking an active part in the life of his community, yet he bore his physical limitations with uncomplaining fortitude and sweetness of spirit. He was a man of strong religious convictions and deep faith and for many years was an active worker in the Presbyterian Church of Penfield. Like Enoch of old, he walked and talked with God and then suddenly, without warning, he was not for God took him. The funeral was held in the Presbyterian Church of Penfield at 3 o'clock on December 9th, and he was laid to rest in the historic cemetery just out side the village. A large number of friends gathered to pay honor to a truly great man and a very successful Christian. All of Mr. Boswell's immediate family were present at the funeral save one sister, Mrs. Emmie Colclough of Penfield, who was kept at home by ill health. The funeral services were in charge of Rev. L. T. Newland, pastor of the Penfield Presbyterian Church. Mr. Lunceford Boswell was 65 years old at the time of his death and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lunceford Boswell, and the following children, Mrs. Roy A. Roberson, of Atlanta, Mrs. Dave Conger, of Penfield, Mrs. E.D. Lindsey of Greensboro, Mrs. C. J. Hulsey of Atlanta, Mrs. Duncan Caldwell of Atlanta, Miss Annette Boswell of Atlanta, Miss Billie Boswell of Greensboro; also the following sons, Roger Boswell of Miami, Fla., Calvin Boswell, of Cordele, Ga, Johnsey Boswell, Greensboro, Paul Boswell of Greensboro. Beside the immediate family there are two surviving sisters, Mrs. Emmie Colclough and Miss Ella Boswell of Penfield and one brother, Mr. R. B. Boswell of Atlanta. Added to these are twelve living grandchildren. "We asked for health: and faith can almost see His radiant face, his movements swift and strong; With every power quickened, joy- ously His soul is breathing song." Candler and Clement A. Evans, Editors (no author listed) "William F. Holden was a man of distinctive influence in public affairs in Georgia and filled various offices of trust and responsibility. He maintained his home in Crawfordville and was a scion of one of the sterling pioneer families of Taliaferro County. His father, Thomas Holden, was born Jan. 10, 1811, at Greensboro, GA, and was an infant at the time of his father's death, being carefully reared and educated by his devoted mother. He passed the greater portion of his life in Taliaferro and Warren counties. Of him it has been written that "He was a plain farmer, reasonably successful; a man of strong common sense, eminently pious but a member of no church." He died on Oct. 27, 1875. His wife, whose maiden name was Susan Akins, was a daughter of William Akins, of Taliaferro county. They became the parents of four children, all of whom are now deceased except the subject of this sketch. William F. Holden was born in Taliaferro county, GA, September 15, 1830, and his youth was passed principally on the homestead farm. He received a fair academic education and as a young man he taught school for a time. In 1857 he was elected to the state legislature and was chosen as his own successor in 1859. He was in the general assembly when the state was passing through the fiery ordeal just preceding the dissolution of the Union, and was a prominent actor in the scenes that marked the strenuous deliberations in the capital of the state. He shared the views of Mr. Stephens and when the state was being urged to pass the ordinance of secession, was bitterly opposed to the action and was a zealous worker in the attempt to defeat the measure. When his state finally seceded, however, he determined to give the Confederate cause the benefit of his services in the field, and accordingly raised a company of volunteers in Taliaferro County, of which he was made captain. The company was mustered into the 49th GA Infantry and ordered to Virginia. Captain Holden was in service only a short time, physical disabilities compelling him to resign his commission and return home. President Davis afterward appointed him to a position in the quartermaster's department, in which he served until the close of the war. In 1868 he was again elected to the legislature. It was at this session, it will be remembered, that the 20 years' lease of the state road was made. Mr. Holden was one of the prime movers in that connection. He introduced a bill to dispose of the state road, Aug. 30, 1868, and the final result was that the road was leased for 20 years, at $300,000 annually, half of the amount to be applied to educational purposes. Another measure which Mr. Holden introduced and was instrumental in bringing to enactment was the bill allowing defendants arraigned on criminal charges to testify not under oath on their on behalf. He introduced the bill on Sept 5, 1868. Of this law the late and honored Gov. AH Stephens spoke in the following words, written in a personal letter to Captain Holden: "In my opinion this law will never be repealed or modified, and will therefore be far-reaching in its consequences to the poor and defenseless. Prisoners arraigned for crime will ever have the comforting assurance that, in conspiracies against them, they will have a chance to speak in their own behalf, and, perchance, many innocent persons may escape the penalty of the guilty. By this law the poor and defenseless have a guarantee of the dearest rights of the citizen." Again, when the legislature was in a turmoil and the people of the state were threatened with the domination of a general assembly composed of negroes, backed by carpet-baggers and Federal soldiers, Mr. Holden was a member of the important commission which was sent to Washington to ask Congress not to interfere with their state affairs and to leave them to peaceful solution. On April 21, 1882, Mr. Holden was appointed postmaster at Augusta, by President Arthur, this being one of the largest and most important offices in the state. He held the position three years, at the expiration of which he returned to Crawfordville, where he then resided, giving his time and attention to the supervision of his extensive planting interests and resting secure in the confidence and esteem of the community. On Sept. 1, 1853, he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Moore, daughter of William B. Moore, a planter of Taliaferro County. Of this union were born 5 children: William Oscar, Claude, John, Horace M. and Stella." 1. Colonial Wills
    2. Virginia Crilley
    3. If your family was in "early Colonial Georgia" you'll want to check out these wills. Most of them are in excellent condition, and fairly easy to read and transcribe. If you do find a family member, please transcribe it, so it will then show up in "search engines" over on our County sites. These were all done when there were no counties -- just Parishes. But I did a google for "St. Johns parish - Georgia" and discovered it became Liberty County. http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/ Colonial Wills, 1733-1778. This series consists of wills probated in the Colony of Georgia. There are thirty-two wills from the Trustee period, 1733-1753. After Georgia became a royal colony in 1754, the governor acted as Ordinary or appointed an official to carry out such duties. The Ordinary probated wills and administered estates by appointing executors, provided instructions to administrators for the inventory and appraisal of an estate, and appointed guardians for minor children. These documents are the copies submitted to the Ordinary for transcription into volumes as the official record copies. The series includes wills in French and in German, some of which include English translations. Each will includes the name of the testator, the date and residence of the testator when the will was written, bequests, and any instructions regarding the estate of the decedant. Most wills are accompanied by attestations of the will with the date the will was proved and/or the date the will was recorded. Some wills include codicils, letters of administration, warrants of appraisement, and estate inventories. These documents were not always written on separate sheets; attestations were often recorded on the will itself. Each of these documents has several dates. The date indexed here is the date that was inscribed on the outside when documents were folded to a uniform size for filing. If the document has no inscription, the date listed is the date the will was written. These records are from Record Group 049-01-02, Colony of Georgia -- Wills.

At the appointed hour the crowd had assembled themselves in the church and awaited the arrival of the marriage party. On arrival, they entered the church in the following order: Mr. Sam Brooke with Miss Dilla(?) Rhodes (?), Mr. Joe Perkins with Miss Willie Neal, Mr. Emmett Darden with Miss May D. Davidson, Mr. Henry Googer with Miss Alice Brown, followed by the happy pair. The ceremony was performed by Rev. A. C. Davidson in a most solemn style. The party then retired to Mr. Mike Taylor's, where awaited them a table filled with good things. Our acquaintance with the young couple has been a most pleasant one. The bride _____ her sensibility (?) and gentleness has won the love and admiration of those with whom she has met.
