    3. Crawfordville Baptist Church was at once known as Bethel located two miles south Of Crawfordville before being moved the current location. -------Original Message------- From: Vivian Toole Date: 11/01/05 11:26:13 To: terri saturday; GATALIAF-L@ROOTSWEB.COM Subject: Former Name of Crawfordville Baptist Church??? I am curious as the any former name of the Crawfordville Baptist Church and/or if there was a former name??? Taliaferro did not become a county until c. 1827. I was under the impression that Crawfordville did not exist until about that time as well or was it some sort of community there before c. 1827 and what was the name. I published the Minutes of Bethesda Baptist Church c. 1817-1865 in 1990. Bethesda is east of Union Point and north of Hwy 44 to Washington in Greene County. The minutes have the names of lots of the older churches in the area. So I began wondering when I got the posting below what the name of it was previously when it was formed in 1802. There are lots of Taliaferro County names in it. I still have some copies in my closet if anyone is interested. The church also has some copies for sale. See my web page at http://www.inu.net/vcates or e-mail me privately if you are interested in a copy. It is in most major libraries in the South. Holden Dies Friday Morning Judge Horace M. Holden, distinguished member of the Georgia bar and a former justice of the State Supreme Court, died Friday at his home on Main Street. He was in his seventieth year. Judge Holden had been ill about ten days, although his condition did not become serious until less than a week before his death. Born in Warren County on March 5, 1866, he was the son of William Franklin Holden, who represented Taliaferro County in the state legislature for several years. His mother was Nancy Moore, a member of a distinguished family in Eastern Georgia. Graduate of Georgia At the age of 19 he was graduated from the University of Georgia with the class of 1885, one of his classmates being William H. Barrett, now judge of the United States Court for the Southern District of Georgia. He returned to Crawfordville and began practice of law in 1886, continuing as a member of the bar until 1901, when he became judge of the Northern Circuit, Superior Court. Judge Holden served on the Superior Court bench until 1907 when he was elevated to the Georgia Supreme Court, serving until 1911 and resigning to re- enter the practice of law. For many years he made his home in Athens, where he was signally honored by the Athens Bar Association, one of the most historical organizations of its kind in the south. He succeeded the late Judge Andrew Cobb as president of the association and his retirement from that office, when he removed to Atlanta a few years ago, was made the occasion of a memorable tribute by his colleagues at the bar. Had resided in Atlanta Judge Holden spent the last few years of his life in Atlanta, moving back to his old home only a few months ago. A profound student of Georgia history, Judge Holden was particularly active in the movement to restore Liberty Hall, the homestead of Alexander H. Stephens, vice president of the Confederacy, at Crawfordville. He was master of ceremonies when Liberty Hall was restored and reopened a few years ago, having also served in like capacity when the Alexander Stephens monument was unveiled. In 1893 he married Miss Mary Corry, of Greene County, a great-niece of Alexander Stephens. She, with four children, survive him. They are Frank A. Holden, Georgia director of the Home Owners' Loan Corporation; Mrs. L.M. Paul; Mrs. Harry Johnston of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Mrs. Charles W. Pagan of Washington, D.C. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Crawfordville Baptist church with the Rev. R.E.L. Harris, pastor of the Hogansville Baptist church, assisted by the Rev. George C. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Neeli Reamer nreamer@starpower.net October 16, 2005, 8:46 am The Advocate-Democrat, Friday, January 6, 1933 MR. J.F. HOLDEN DIED THURSDAY MORNING Sincere and genuine sorrow followed the announcement of the death of Mr. John F. Holden, which occurred at his residence in Crawfordville early Thursday morning. Although Mr. Holden had been in declining health for several years and for the past several days his condition had been critical and it was known that the end was near, his death was nevertheless a severe shock to his family and friends. Mr. Holden was one of the best known men in this section of the state. He was widely known in business circles having until a few years ago been the head of a chain of banks in this and surrounding counties. He was interested in many business ventures, and also operated a large number of farms. He was very successful in his business ventures, and accumulated a large fortune. However, the depression of the last few years has been a heavy drain on his financial resources, and a large part of his fortune was wiped out before his death. He was twice State Senator from the Nineteenth senatorial district. He was elected to serve the district in 1915 and 1916, and again in 1927 and 1928. He served in the senate with courage and fidelity, and made many friends in the legislature whose respect and esteem he continued to enjoy after retiring to private life. Following the death of his brother, Mr. W.O. Holden, in 1919, he was Mayor of Crawfordville for several terms. He was first elected Mayor to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his brother, who was Mayor at the time of his death. His administration as Mayor was progressive and successful, and his voluntary retirement caused much regret among the citizens of the town. He never sought other public office, although he was often importuned by his many friends to become a candidate for Representative as well as other offices. Mr. Holden, who was a bachelor was 72 years old. He is survived by his two brothers, Judge Horace M. Holden, of Atlanta, and Mr. Claude Holden, of Haines City, Fla., and one sister, Miss Stella Holden, of Atlanta. Also a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives. Although funeral arrangements had not been definitely completed with The Advocate-Democrat went to press Thursday afternoon, interment will take place today in the Crawfordville cemetery. It is expected that an unusually large crowd will attend the services, as Mr. Holden was widely known throughout this section of the state and enjoyed the friendship of thousands of people. The Advocate-Democrat joins the host of friends in extending to the bereaved family and relatives its sincere and heartfelt sympathy in their sorrow. 1. Re: Mrs. Elizabeth Rhodes
    2. Hi. Mikki Martin recently posted a short newspaper article about Mrs. Elizabeth Rhodes who died Nov. 14, 1899, in Greene Co. Mrs. Elizabeth Rhodes of the article was Elizabeth Harris Bristow, sister of my great-grandmother, Sarah Olivia (Bristow) Taylor. They were daughters of Chesley Bristow and Martha "Patsy" Harris. Elizabeth Harris Bristow was born July 14, 1820 in GA, died Nov. 14 1899, Greene Co. She was married Sept. 11, 1851 in Taliaferro Co., to Asa Rhodes, son of Allen and Jemima Rhodes. Both Elizabeth and Asa are buried at Bethany Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Greene Co. The brother mentioned in the article was Alonzo Castle Bristow. He was visiting his mother, who was then staying with Elizabeth and Asa Rhodes, and was just sitting on the porch when the Union soldiers shot and killed him. I will be posting more soon regarding this incident. Rhoda

David was born on February 25, 1924. He was a clerk at the Sandy Cross Baptist Church and an Aviation Ordnanceman, the thankless task job in first Class during WWII that served on the USS Cabot. David married on June 28, 1946 to Ellie Pauline Lunceford and began our family research many years ago, a lengthy hobby I also enjoy. David was seen delivering milk in the Elberton area for 20+ years. In later years he relocated to Martinez and worked as a food brokerage representative in the Northeastern part of Georgia. “Way beyond being a “hobby genealogical researcher,” David loved fishing for bream and bass in the local streams and ponds, until his health became bad.” Sadly, David passed on a day before my own birthday on May 23, 2002 and his cremated remains lie at the foot of his own father Dewitte T. Edwards buried within the walls of the Edwards plot located in the Crawfordville Baptist Church Cemetery. Additional Comments: DeWitte Talmage Edwards was the second child of and the second of five sons born to George Thomas and Martha Lyle Edwards, who had a total of seven children. Dewitt served the office of Taliaferro County Sheriff until his death on March 8, 1933. (I have more history of this family if you have not yet read about them on this websight.)
