    3. Talbotton New Era published Friday, 09-14-01 Norman King Carter, Sr. Sept. 7, 2001 Talbotton: Norman King Carter, Sr., 84, died Sept. 7. Funeral services were held Sept. 10 at Talbotton Methodist Church with burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Carter was born in Talbotton, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Grady Carter. He was retired from the Department of Transportation. At age 21, Mr. Carter was elected Mayor of Talbotton, the youngest mayor in the United States at that time. He was an expert shot when it came to quail hunting, loved baseball, and always said that he could do most anything but make a living! However, this was another one of his many jokes. After retiring, Mr. Carter and his wife, Mary Virginia, spent six months each year in Talbotton and six months in Sapphire Valley, North Carolina where they enjoyed golf, friends and fellowship. He won the annual "Gentleman of the Year" golf award at Sapphire Valley. Survivors include his wife, Mary Virginia Carter; one son and daughter-in-law Norman Carter, Jr. and Jane Carter; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren. Mrs. Mattie Estella Hardnett April 4, 1912 - August 31, 2001 Manchester: Mrs. Mattie Estella Hough Hardnett, 89, died Aug. 31 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Sept. 6 at Concord Baptist Church in Woodland with Rev. H. G. Ellison officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hardnett was born April 4, 1912 in Talbot County, daughter of the late Jim and Alberta Hough. She was a faithful member of Church of God in Christ in Manchester. Survivors include her husband, Henry Hardnett, Jr. of Manchester; one son, James (Gwen) Hardnett of Manchester; a daughter-in-law, Diane Hardnett, also of Manchester; one sister, Lula Bell Reese of Loraine, Ohio; ten grandchildren, DeWandalyn, Dwayne (Melanie), Michael, Dyane, Candace, Jaleesa, Teresa, Shannon Bowman, Derrick Odums; six great-grandchildren; a host of caring nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. One daughter, Theresa, and one son Wayne, preceded her in death. Three sisters and five brothers also preceded her in death. Anderson and Marshall Funeral Home of Manchester was in charge of arrangements. Franklin Eugene Daniel, Sr. Oct. 20, 1936 - Sept. 6, 2001 Box Springs: Franklin Eugene Daniel, Sr., 64, of Box Springs, died Sept. 6 at his residence. Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at Geneva Baptist Church with Rev. Lynn McManious officiating, assisted by Rev. Jack Fryer. Burial followed at Cox Family Cemetery with Junior Daniel, Arthur Pearson, Benny Elliott, John Adams, Henry Daniel, and Leon Fryer serving as pallbearers. Mr. Daniel was born Oct. 20, 1936 in Talbot county, son of the late Allen Brooks Daniel, Jr. and the late Sally Elizabeth Posey Daniel. He worked as a meat inspector with U.S.D.A. and was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife Donna Bowen Daniel of Box Springs; one son Franklin E. Daniel, Jr. of Hiawassee; three daughters Freida Horde of Mansfield, Angela Boyett of Covington and Regina Worth of Douglas; one sister Liela Holloway of Pine Mountain Valley; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Talbotton Funeral Home of Talbotton was in charge of arrangements. Robert Harris Gilson, Sr. July 25, 1925 - Sept. 11, 2001 Manchester: Robert Harris Gilson, Sr., 78 of Manchester, died Sept. 11 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were held Sept. 13 at Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Manchester with Rev. T. P. Hadley officiating. Burial followed in Meriwether Memory Gardens. Mr. Gilson was born July 25, 1925 in Talbot County, the son of the late William Mangrum Gilson and the late Mary Harris Gilson. A U. S. Army veteran of WWII serving in Co. C 865th Engineering Aviation Battalion, he was the retired owner of G&K Automotive. Mr. Gilson was a Baptist, deacon and former councilman in Talbotton. Survivors include his wife Helen Tomlin Gilson of Manchester; sons and daughters-in-law Dana Gilson of Manchester, Bobby and Sherry Gilson of Pine Mountain and John and Amy Gilson, also of Manchester; two brothers, Ralph Gilson of Woodbury and Ben Gilson of Talbotton; two sisters, Maidie Ligon of Talbotton and Mary Parten of Newnan; two grandsons, Thomas Christopher (Tom) Gilson and Robert Benjamin (Ben) Gilson.
