The alarm was given about one oclock, the fire having been discovered in the rear of the residence. Neighbors hurried to the scene but the flames had gained such headway that it was impossible to put them out. None of the furniture upstairs was saved. Nearly everything was badly damaged by the rough handling which it received. The loss of Mrs. Robins will be several thousand dollars. It is understood that she carried two thousand dollars worth of insurance but this will not cover more than a fourth of the loss. Mrs. Robins and her family have the sympathy of their friends in Talbotton and elsewhere in the loss of her elegant home. Some Sisters, but few Mothers. And to us, perhaps only one mother. She is Mrs. Eliza Callier. It was a chivalrous sentiment that prompted Mr. Robert Mizell on Memorial Day, to gather a posy of Springs rarest roses, bind them with satin streamers, and carry them to this noble mother of the Confederacy. The presentation was full of appreciation, and fraught with emotion. And if words could have found expression in this holy scene they would have said in part: Your patriotic achievements are sacred in the hearts of all who know you. Through all the years of your long life, how sublime your influence, your patience, your sufferings and your example. We bring to you this floral offering in token of our unfading admiration and tenderness. The more than four score and ten years have been blessings, everyone, and they are glassed in the mind of Him who crowns every virtue and rewards every sacrifice. E. Lees Anniversary Fitting tribute was paid to the loved memory of Lee on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. E.L. Bardwell, Mrs. N.P. Carreker, Mrs. N.C. Underwood and Miss Nannie Raines arranged the stage with appropriate decorations. A splendid picture of Lee adorned the center. Around the easels and walls confederate flags and colors waved patriotically; vases of exquisite roses lent a rare fragrance. The music under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Ragland added a charm and enthusiasm. The singing of Dixie by the pupils of LeVert College was inspiring. The speech and reading by Master Robert Leonard and Miss Mary Gullett Smith gave a zest and brightness of youth. Mrs. J.A. Bryan read Lee at Gettysburg, a production of Col. O.D. Gormans. This poem was selected by the state program committee and was read by many chapters on this anniversary. Col. Gorman with his usual ease and dignity was master of ceremonies. Hon. William H. Brannon, who is known all over the broad land as a prominent Knight of Pythias, and who held all the offices in the order and now holds the highest position that is in rank introduced the orator and proved that with him, Knighthood is forever on all occasions. Mr. Brannon is graceful, natural and eloquent. By his refined elegance and courtly manners he is one of whom we may well be proud. Judge Eugene Ray, the orator, is just fine. He is Judge Ray the brilliant, humorous and original. He makes no effort but wins his audience heart and soul. The Alice Beall Mathews Chapter was glad to have Judge Ray as its orator and its honored guest. It was a pleasure to see so many faces of the dear old veterans in the audience. Hi, Does anyone know the full name of Mr. DeLoache who was the Postmaster of Talbotton during the early 1900s? There is a Mrs. W.O. DeLoache whose name appears often in society articles and marriage notices (she sang at weddings) and I wonder if it is her husband. Below is an article about the Postmaster taken from The New Era. Carla Miles The Talbotton New Era Thursday, December 10, 1908 Page One It Is Postmaster DeLoache The patrons of the Talbotton Post Office will be glad to learn that the Post Office Department failed to accept the resignation of Postmaster DeLoache, and that he will continue to serve as the Postmaster of Talbotton. Some thirty days ago, Postmaster DeLoache sent in his resignation to take effect within thirty days. He accepted a position with a Columbus firm and expected to give up the office, which he had filled with such marked ability for more than twelve years. The department was slow to accept the resignation and finally Postmaster DeLoache reconsidered and decided to continue in the office here. Talbotton has never had a better or more faithful official in this important position. He has worked hard for the building up of the business and indirectly for the upbuilding of Talbotton. No office in Georgia is conducted with more satisfaction to the patrons and the people of the Talbotton and Talbot County are glad that he will continue to handle the mail of Uncle Sam at this place.

The people of Talbotton are fortunate in securing such an accomplished teacher as Professor Brooks. Talbotton has long been famous for its educational institutions, and has sent out scholars all over the country who have reflected great credit on the training, which they received in the school of that place. Among them is our townsman Mr. Hugh P. Quin. There is also the lamented Chancellor Walter B. Hill of the University of Georgia, received the principle part of his education. Hon. Oscar S. Straus who has distinguished himself as United States Ambassador to Turkey, and a member of President Roosevelts cabinet, also received his early education in the schools of Talbotton, Ga.
