I recently heard from a friend that when "deserters" (I don't really like to use the term, since there were probably multiple reasons for a man leaving his company), were often times hunted down in their home counties by groups called the "buttermilk cavalry", who in some cases actually shot and killed the young man. if he was found. Has anyone else ever heard this term used? Virginia

It would be nice to find out more about the CSA men who served from Talbot county. Some of these appear to have been from one family (as happened so often) If you can supply some information about their family....or where they were eventually buried...I'd like to add it. Posted on: Talbot County, Ga Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Talbot/621 Surname: DISMUKES, ZACHARY, STONE, BROWN, GREER, BALDWIN ------------------------- Boy, do I need some help. Desperation is beginning to set in. I am trying to trace Jesse H. DISMUKES (1803-aft. 1860); born in Ga., died in Ark. I THOUGHT he was the son of John Finney Dismukes/Mary Julia ZACHARY and that he married Julia STONE, Nancy BROWN and Susan GREER. In 1860, I find him (or "a" Jesse Dismukes) in the Columbia County Ark. Census and in the household are wife Nancy and and Eliz. BALDWIN, age 35 born in Ga. Now, I discover ANOTHER Jesse H. Dismukes: There is also a Jesse H. Dismukes who marries a MARY BALDWIN on February 11, 1845 in Talbot County, Georgia. Who is THIS Jesse? Who are his parents? Did this one marry a Nancy and end up in Arkansas? I will be grateful for ANY clues. Thanks, Glenna

He maried Martha Ann (Alice) Grace Jan 29, 1839 in Hancock, Ga. Jackson died ?1900 in Hemphill, Sabine, Texas and is buried there. Martha is also buried in Hemphill. One of their daughter's, JANE CICERO COGBURN is my gg-grandmother. She married JOHN WESLEY SMITH Jan. 30, 1873. She was b. 1847/Panola Texas. Legend has it that the Cogburn's were pottery makers in Rusk, Texas. Hope this helps some..I have just begun the COGBURN/SMITH research myself. Good Luck. Brentha
