I would like additional information from anyone on the list who might know something about the William J. SLADE and Martha Ann MITCHELL marriage of June 18, 1842, performed by John McMichael, JP. It is shown on page 182 of the above referenced Talbot Marriages #13. These two surnames, SLADE and MITCHELL have caused me a lot of problems in relation to my DENNIS and McDUFFIE research in GA. I need to know what the ages of this bride and groom are and if possible who their parents and or siblings might be. Hollingsworth, my great grandfather. George Hollingsworth was born in 1809 in Georgia. He married Elizabeth DOWDY, in Talbot Co, GA, on December 21, 1841. They were parents of eight children: M.A.; J.W.; M.J.; Francis; Henry; Kenard; J.T.; and E. James Arnold Hollingsworth was born September 26, 1824, Twiggs Co, GA., and died November 20, 1863. It is thought he was killed in Action in the Civil War and is buried near Atlanta, GA. He married Nancy DOWDY in Talbot Co, GA, on December 28, 1841. He married his second wife, Elizabeth HOWARD in Talbottom, Talbot Co, GA., March 18, 1849. There were five children: Laura; William; James Howard; Sarah; and Louisa. Israel was the son of John and Mary Ann Hollingsworth. He was born August 01, 1817, Twiggs Co, GA, and died February 08, 1881. He married Diana L. Story, who was born November 27, 1821, in Georgia. She died November 12, 1889, in Pickens Co, AL. They were parents of seven sons: John Thomas; Jonathan Americus, died February 23, 1863, Vicksburg, Miss.; Marion Columbus, my grandfather; Wilkins Monroe; Guston Lafayette; William Jesse; and John Abbot. Israel's middle initial is reported as "I." but I suspect it may have been mistaken during early research because the old time cursive penmanship was not easy to read. One cousin says she was told that his middle name was "Lafayette." I have not found any original written records to confirm either one. I have further information and am willing to share. Anne, this is the first time I've heard of the DOGGETT surname in relation to the GRANT families of GA. I have seen the name Martha many times in relation to the GRANT line. Augustin L. GRANT, age 38 and his wife, Martha E., age 32 appear on the 1850 census in Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA with their children. Augustin (AKA A.L. GRANT) was the son of Keturah MILLS and William GRANT formerly of Washington, Wilkes Co., GA. Keturah MILLS GRANT married Dr. Wiley B. ECTOR after the death of William GRANT (s/o Daniel GRANT). They lived in Meriwether Co., GA. Wiley B. ECTOR was the editor of the Columbus Inquirer newspaper at one point. I found a Martha GRANT on the 1860 Census of Monroe Co., GA, page 126 in May 1999 at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamonroe/1860_cen/126.HTM Monroe Co., GA is the county just east of and adjoining Upson Co., GA. Upson adjoins Talbot Co. to the west. This Martha is 62 years old and in the household of Joseph, 67, a farmer with Jefferson 21, Rachel 19, and Elizabeth 8. Living next door to them is the household of J. L. and Ann GRANT with George W. 12, Rebecca 10, Martha A. 8, James M. 6, and David 3. I assume Martha is the w/o Joseph. The 1870 Georgia Census Index lists the following Martha GRANTs: GRANT, Martha 70, F, W, SC, Forsyth P.O. Monroe Co., GA, M593, Roll 166, page 155 GRANT, Martha 17, F, W, GA, Shoal Crk Dist, Hart Co., M593, Roll 157, page 274. There is a listing for three (3) Martha GRANTs who are listed as "black". Ferguson, JP pg 67 ========================== Edmund FINDLEY MAY have been one of our five FINDLEY brothers -- Owen, Charles, Ed, Evan and Benjamin -- all of whom were in Talbot County GA part or all of the period of about 1830-1859. Edmund FINDLEY served on the Sept Term 1833, Talbot Co GA Petit Jury. In 1850 Talbot Co Census he is living next to Owen FINDLEY and listed as 50, farmer, b. SC with wife Mary-30, Franklin-10, Amanda-9, Andrew-7, Thomas-4, William-2. Edmund FINDLEY appears to be on the 1860 Census in Catahoula, Pinewoods Dist, Rose Field Parrish, Louisiana, where he is listed as E. FINLEY-56 with wife Mary-4?, Amanda-18, Thomas-?, and John-? We're not sure if our "Ed" FINDLEY was Edmund or Edwin since there was also an Edwin & Catherine FINDLEY in Talbot Co during the same time frame.
