    1. [GATALBOT] GIDDENS born in Yankey
    2. Hi, I've not been subscribed to this list for a year or so. I recently was sent a family history written by Laura May Belle Huckabay Loftin. She says her grandfather Erastus GIDDENS/GIDDINGS was born in Yankey. He was born in 1828. Where is YANKEY? Also, her grandmother Adeline TRICE was born in "Tolbton Comlumba" in 1831. I'm pretty sure she meant the area around Talbotton and Columbus. Thanks, Sharon Hofer

    3. I noticed RADNEY in your tagline. My gr gr grandmother, Nancy Pugh, had a sister, Frances, that married William A. Radney. One of their daughters Susan, married William Pew Cadenhead, her first cousin. Do you have any connections to these? I have a "cousin" in AL who is trying to work on the direct line mentioned above, since it is his family. 2. I'm sure you have found the cemetary by now. Just in case, if you're coming out of Columbus on Hwy. 80 towards Geneva, Georgia- you'll see an old white church on the left just outside of town. Turn right onto Ga. Hwy.240. The church will be on the right I'm guessing around ten miles. There is a Nancy Hamilton. Her stone is to itself. Don't know if your Will was buried there unmarked. I am the gggrandaughter of Barney and Rebecca Hamilton Powell who are buried near Nancy and Mattie Lou. If you have any info on a connection with Rebecca, pleas share. I hope I have helped.

    2. Hi Susan. I saw your e mail to Jimmie on the GATALBOT-L letter. The eastern part of Talbot Co became part of Taylor Co when it came into being in 1852. In the 1860 Census, as presented in the book--THEY TARRIED IN TAYLOR(A Georgia County) by Essie Jones Childs on page 112: John F. Herricks 48 SC Nancy 48 SC Jesse J.G. 16 Nicey A. 14 Winney A. 13 George W. 10 Eizabeth A. 5 There are no Herricks in the 1870 Census of Taylor Co. ------------------------------------------------------- Also, on page 5 of the book, these entries appear: Inferoir Court Minutes 2/1/1853 one entry read as follows:John Herricks be paid for $15.00 for the use of Josiah Layfield. ( CTW:use--means --for care of.) second entry reads: August Term, 1853 John F. Herricks be paid $30.00 for support of Josiah Layfield. (Mrs Childs has added a note, which reads: (Josiah now around 113 years old by the 1850 census of Marion Co,) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CTW Note:I have Josiah as born in 1758 and died in 1857. He was a Revolutionary War vet. The age given to the Census taker in Marion co in 1850 was in error. I had beleived all along that the Herricks had to be related to Josiah. But I did not know that Mrs Herricks, was a Layfield. ------------------------------------------------------------------- In court minutes: 1855 County paid subsistance money Nancy and Elizabeth Bachelor and Josiah Layfield. (This is how it appears exactly in the book. ) 8-10-1857 Brigett Mullins paid $22 for service and attention to Josiah Layfield for the last six months of his life. -------------------------------------------------- I looked up marriages in the book and here is what I found: James Bachelor married Nancy Ann Herricks in 1860 James Bachelor married Elizabeth Underwood in 1865. Note by CTW: I don't know how/if any the marriages tie to the subsistance payments. --------------------------------------------- Tarried in Taylor and 3 other Taylor Co books are now out on one CD at a cost of only $!0 The Central Georgia Genealogical Society in Warner Robins, Ga. ----------------------------------------------- I noticed that the Herrick children had names: Nicey A., Winney, and George. George Layfield married Mary Winney Martin. Her sister, Nicey Ann Maritn Jinks is my GT GT Grandmother. I have been tracing the Martins, Jinks, and Layfields for a few years. Josiah is buried in Taylor Co Ga. If you have any more questions, I will be glad to help. Sincerely, Carol T. Watson [email protected]

    3. Tom, You're raising some interesting questions, and I hope someone else can also shed light on this. I'll give you what I know anyway. 1)It is unusual for the Census report to use the 17th District which is a Land District which does border Harris County.... usually Census pages and enumerators used the GMD (military district) #s....and these would be for that section 689, 904, 894, 688. These are in numerical order through the entire state according to when the Military District was formed.....so the top and bottom ones, i.e. 689 and 688 were the first ones settled. As they had more people then the 894 was created and later 904. Where did you copy what you typed in? Was it from the microfilm or published some where? 2)When Talbot was formed in 1827...it said, "starting at the southeast corner of Lot #193 in the 17th District, etc. I don't have a Talbot County land lot map...but if someone else does maybe they can help us out with exactly where that was in relation to the county. I don't see any notation that any more land ever came from Harris to become Talbot.... 1840 Census, Talbot County Henry Bailey Sr- Talbot Co- 197 - No (twp?) listed (Harris C0) Georgia -1850 From census index Oliver H P Bailey- Talbot Co-237- 17th District (Harris Co) Question: was the 17th District actually a part of Harris County at one time or is the information in error? All the Bailey folks except Oliver had left Talbot by 1850. It's possible Oliver may have been related to Henry Bailey, Sr. Is there a land expert on the list? **** Is there a Grantor/Grantee Index that exists for the period 1836-1858? **One of the drawbacks of doing research in land in Talbot is that there is no master index ....each volume beginning with 1827, would have it own index. This makes it very difficult to research unless you can spend alot of time in the courthouse....or order the films from LDS. Or is there line item detail, age groups and gender, for the 1840 without having to order film? ** The 1850 census has been published. WE NEED the 1840 census to be done and put on-line.... so if anyone does look at even a portion of the census, please record it and share it with everyone. Virginia

    3. Hi Susan: We haven't "talked" in ages. It's good to see that you are still out there. I'm still making trips to Talbot and Upson several times a year. And we made some progress on my McDaniel and Clark lines there in recent months. We're even having a McDaniel Reunion in Upson in late August. You and I communicated in the past about our roots in western middle Georgia and our ancestry in the railroads (you may remember mine were Vining, Travis and McDaniel with what became the Central of GA). You mention information about Mississippi. I'm also doing MS research, and would be interested in knowing the complete titles, dates, authors and publishers of the two sources that you mention in your GATALBOT-L e-mail. My mother was raised in the rural Salem Community outside of the small town of Macon, MS. Her family moved to Macon during the depression when they lost their farm, and she graduated from high school there. I'd appreciate it if you could check your book and see if it has anything on Macon, MS. The other sites in MS that are important to us are Iuka and Tishomingo and Paden in Tishomingo Co. and maybe Itawamba Co., in northeast MS, near the AL line. Let me know how you are. Are you making progress with your genealogy and how is the Insights business? I've never been busier in my life. So many opportunities--so little time. But, it's fun most days. 2. 1840 Census, Talbot County Henry Bailey Sr- Talbot Co- 197 - No (twp?) listed (Harris C0) Georgia -1850 From census index Oliver H P Bailey- Talbot Co-237- 17th District (Harris Co) Question: was the 17th District actually a part of Harris County at one time or is the information in error? All the Bailey folks except Oliver had left Talbot by 1850. It's possible Oliver may have been related to Henry Bailey, Sr. Is there a land expert on the list? Is there a Grantor/Grantee Index that exists for the period 1836-1858? Or is there line item detail, age groups and gender, for the 1840 without having to order film? Thanks so much. Tom

    1. [GATALBOT] Re: Jephtha Columbus Chambless
    2. Tanya, I am a decendent of Jeptha Chambless and am researching the line. I don't know if Jeptha left a will or not but Susan did. Her's is registered in DeSota Co. Mississippi. I have not seen it yet but it is listed in the Index of Mississippi Wills. I am planning a reasearch trip in Oct to Talbot Co., Georgia and DeSota Co., Mississippi in October of this year to find out more. Would love to exchange information with you. Jimmie Chambless
