Webster, on Wednesday afternoon. The home was simply and artistically decorated. To the strains of Mendelsohn played by Mrs. Corn Ellis the couple entered and their vows were plighted in the presence of a few intimate friends, Rev. N.C. Underwood officiating. The bride is a womanly woman and possesses the attributes to make happy the home and heart of the man in whom she trusts. She wore a blue cloth gown with hat and gloves to match and carried a shower bouquet of violets. Mr. Caldwell is an excellent young planter, and in every way worthy of the noble bride he has won. He is the grandson of the late Mr. Monk and has inherited the traits that rendered his grandfather so popular and successful. Handsome and useful tokens of their friends’ esteem were displayed. They left immediately for the groom’s home at Daviston. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.6 Kb

Mr. Snyder had not been at work in the New Era office for a week, having been a little sick, and was in the office seated in a chair, talking to Mr. Thornton Trussell. Suddenly Mr. Snyder laid his head back in his chair and seemed unable to get his breath. When Mr. Trussell reached him he was dead. Mr. Snyder came to Talbotton about eighteen months ago and accepted a position with the New Era as a compositor. He made a faithful and efficient man and attended strictly to his business. He made many friends while here and his death was a cause of general regret. Mr. Snyder was a native of Ohio, having moved to Georgia about twenty-eight years ago. He has a niece living somewhere in Washington, but her address was unknown and she could not be notified of his death. The funeral took place from Hotel Louise on Thursday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. J.G. Harrison of the Methodist church. The remains were interred at Oak Hill Cemetery with appropriate ceremonies. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.7 Kb

Allison Thomas E. Allison, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Allison was born August 21, 1892 and died November 7, 1907, after an illness of about one month. His illness resulted from burns, which brought about complications and terminated later in his death. His suffering was intense at all time, and no one could go in and out of his room without getting deeply touched by his constant and unabating suffering. He bore his sufferings heroically, but seemed perfectly invoked to death. He constantly invoked his heavenly Father’s aid and left testimonials sufficient to convince those who were with him that God had come to dwell in his heart and he seemed ready and willing to answer the summons when it came. Just before he died he spoke of going to a beautiful place, and said the distance was only a short one, and asked if his mother and aunt would go with him as “twas only a little way” and then he fell asleep to wake on resurrection morn. The transmission from life to death was hardly perceptible, so peacefully and quietly did he pass out. May God comfort and sustain the parents and family in their darkest hours and may they look only to Him who doeth all things best, and bow in submission to His will and be able to say the “Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord.” Cousin This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.9 Kb

Her death came as quite a shock to her family and friends. Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her husband, Mr. William Mitchell, four sons, Messrs. Walter, George, Charlie and Earl Mitchell and one daughter, Mrs. Charles Ingram. The funeral services will take place today. The Talbotton New Era Thursday, December 19, 1907 Page 3 Mrs. William Mitchell Mrs. William Mitchell was born in Philadelphia, Pa., January 9, 1852 and died in Talbotton, Ga., December 11, 1907. When a mere child she came to Georgia and spent the remainder of her life here – a large part of it being in Talbot County and for the past two years in this community. She was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church, and exemplified in her daily walk her Christian profession. Measured by any standard she was one of the most unselfish and self-denying women I have ever known. Her loving ministrations knew no sect or creed. Wherever there was suffering humanity, there she was found. No slight indisposition of her own, nor extreme conditions of weather were allowed to interfere with her errands of mercy. The more destitute the condition of the sufferer, the more imperative she felt it her duty to respond. At the incarnation of life, to watch with others through weary months of sickness and hope deferred, to sooth the dying and clothe the dead for burial – these were her kindly and Christly offices. And so we were often reminded that “Kind hearts are more than coronets and simple faith than Norman blood.” We emphasize this phase of her character because the light constantly fell on it. But she was bright and cheerful to a wonderful degree. In the company of the well and strong and young she was a veritable sunbeam. The bereft husband and devoted sons and daughter are not left comfortless – they know she has found a home in the celestial city, for the Bible tells us: “For such is the Kingdom of God.” M.H.J. The Talbotton New Era Thursday, December 19, 1907 Page 6 Card of Thanks Mr. William Mitchell desires to tender his appreciation to the many friends who were so kind and attentive during the recent serious illness and death of his wife, Mrs. William Mitchell. A half-century has passed in which love has wrought hand in hand with truth. On Tuesday evening, Dec. 3rd, was celebrated the golden anniversary of this happy couple. The home of Captain and Mrs. John M. Heath, on College Street, was very bright in its cherry glow of wood fires and attractive with ferns and flowers. Simple elegance characterized every decoration. The parlor was fragrant with white roses. The dining room was effective in its decorations, and symbolized the devotion of the four living daughters, Mrs. J.M. Heath, Mrs. Euler B. Smith, Mrs. E.J. McGehee and Miss Virginia Persons. Plants and ferns filled the nooks and alcoves. A slender vase of golden chrysanthemums rested upon a lace piece, this being outlined with a delicate tracery of asparagus ferns, lengthwise the table was a broad sash of golden satin ribbon. Place cards, bearing the initials “E.P. and H.P.”, with dates “57 – 07” and golden bells, representing the artistic skill of an admiring little friend, Miss Imogene Smith. Adown the table were place alternately crystal candelabra, the waxen candles being covered with yellow shades, casting a mellow radiance, these, with an array of dainty china, cut glass and silver, gave the beauty of completeness to an exquisitely appointed table. From the chandelier above, golden bells seemed to ring down their chimes fond messages bringing. These were tied with golden ribbons, fashioned into true love knots. An elaborate feast was gracefully served in courses. Very youthful appeared the gentle, lovely little bride of fifty years. By her side stood her lover, thru all the changing scenes, ever gallant, ever chivalrous, a courtly type of the South’s grandest and best. Their oneness has been full of beautiful deeds, graceful courtesies, tender ministrations and rare purity of thought. Many good wishes were wafted to them throughout the day, and in the hearts of their wide circle of friends was voted this sentiment: “May lengthened years fall to your share, Success crown all endeavors, God bless you both, a mated pair For life, for death, forever.” The children and grandchildren of this noble couple are Hon. and Mrs. Augusts Pou Persons, John Henry and Emily Pou Persons, Mr. Thomas H. Persons, Mr. Thomas H. Persons, Jr., Mr. Raiford Persons, Captain and Mrs. John M. Heath, Miss Emily Pou Heath, Master John M. Heath, Mr. and Mrs. Euler B. The visitors from out of this community, which embraces Lee County, were Misses Walker, Griffin, Webster, Kellum, Carlisle and Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Carlisle of Georgia, and Misses Slaton and Barron of Notasulga. The brides were tastefully dressed, and fairer, sweeter girls are not to be found in any community. They are perfect types of southern womanhood, being endowed by nature with beauty and brain and having the requisite polish necessary to showing the real merit of genius. Mr. Carlisle, of whom we know but very little, from information, carries the stamp of true manhood on his handsome face. If he is not all the term perfect gentleman implies, then the handwriting of the Almighty is at fault. As to Mr. Capps, we all know Arthur, and to know him is to love him. Cooing and laughter and gurgles and cries; Dimples for tenderest kisses; Chaos of hope and of raptures and sighs, Chaos of fears and of blisses But heaven stopped under the roof on the morn, That it brought there only a baby. Just three brief months was this wee, winsome baby spared to her fond and loving parents and grandparents. Three months, yet in that time she had brought heaven into the home, hope and happiness into the hearts, she had caused them to realize the meaning of the poem in every word – and in its fullest sense. But one fair October morning, an angel came and bore away God’s mid summer gift and the loved ones are sorrowing. May His infinite love and pity keep them and bless them in the hour of sore bereavement and loneliness and point them the upward way, because “Heaven holds all for which we sigh.” Linda Lee Bryan This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.7 Kb

Baugh held a reunion recently. There were their wives, husbands, little ones, kindred and neighbors, met at their mother’s residence on the 25th inst., to once more be together under the old parental rooftree. There are nine living children, Messrs. Robert, Alec, Nathan and James; Mesdames Ansley, Gorham, Riley, Hanson and Miss Lizzie Baugh. In all, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, their number is 55. There are not many parents who can boast of as many healthy and hardy descendants. It was a happy gathering, and not long after the salutations, a sumptuous dinner was awaiting them, of which every one partaking could testify to the cuisine as being most excellent. Among others present were, Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. McClendon, Mr. James Boyd, Mr. Will Patterson, and Mr. Frank Patterson. The parting of this happy band, however, is the saddest, as they will be scattered through Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and Texas, “May God be with you ‘til we meet again.” A Friend This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.6 Kb

The little fellow had a severe case of measles about two months ago and never entirely recovered. His death was due to a relapse. The funeral services were conducted from the home Monday morning, Rev. Francis McCullough officiating. The funeral was largely attended.
