    1. [GASPALDI] Georgia Archives Update
    2. Lynn Cunningham
    3. This is from the current Georgia Genealogical Society Newsletter.   ARCHIVES UPDATE The Archives needs your help again. The Archives needs researchers to visit the facility in Morrow. The Archives is now a part of the University System of Georgia. Officials of the USG and state lawmakers are monitoring Archives usage numbers in preparation for budget negotiations during the upcoming legislative session. Responding to the need has mutually beneficial results. Even with all the ever-growing online services, only a tiny percentage of available records is on the Internet. The key to knocking a hole in your Georgia genealogy brick wall is more likely to be at the Archives than anywhere else. The Archives collection includes all kinds of county records, – tax digests, wills, estate inventories and deeds, just to name a few – as well as books, manuscripts, personal papers and much more. Plan a trip to the Georgia Archives today. The Archives will benefit. You will, too. For more information on the Archives, visit www.georgiaarchives.org. Help in planning a visit can be found here: http://www.georgiaarchives.org/visit/. Please note that the Web site currently is undergoing renovation due to the shift from the Secretary of State to the University System. New Archives hours: Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

    3. Spalding County GaArchives Cemeteries.....Woodard Cemetery ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sadie Rogers [email protected] August 09, 2013 This is info I noted that has been transcribed from a small African-American Cemetery in Spalding Co. Ga. It has been basically lost for years as Spalding Co. and Spalding County had no records of it. I hope you will get it on GenWeb. as previously noted. That was my main goal, so it would not be lost. There are many unmarked graves here, with only 6 stones. One stone is not readable. Not sure what other info you want, but you may take whatever I have included and use as you deem to be appropriate. The Heron Bay subdivision sets on the county lines of Henry and Spalding counties. This cemetery is in Spalding County. The family information is documented in census records, death certificates, ancestry, obituaries, other records, and a living relative of the Woodards. Guesses by some that the cemetery dates back to 1860's but not confirmed. The land the cemetery is on, was owned at one time by Marcellus Woodard. He descended from a slave family. Marcellus was married to Susie ? and had a large family of 6 girls and 3 boys. He later married Eula? and had one child. The burial place for Marcellus and Eula is unknown. One of their children is Lavonia, who married Lawyer Taylor. Mr. Taylor was the first African-American to graduate from Northwestern University. He was later a professor of mathematics and physics and registrar, at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta. They lived on the Clark campus for 30 years. This family was well educated, well accomplished, and traveled the world. Info on stones is transcribed exactly The Woodard Cemetery - transcribed 2012. Location: Luella Community, on Ga. 1. [GASPALDI] New Hours For Georgia Archives Beginning July 31, 2013
    2. Lynn Cunningham
    3. Following is a mssage received today from Steve Wrigley, Executive Vice Chancellor of Administration, University System of Georgia, concerning the Georgia Archves. Friends of Georgia Archives & History From:Steve W. Wrigley >Date: June 14, 2013, 10:20:30 AM EDT > >Hi folks, > >I wanted to update you on the latest regarding the Archives transfer to the BOR. > >As you know, effective July 1, 2013 the Georgia Archives will transfer to the Board of Regents. The Governor and General Assembly approved a budget increase of $300,000 for FY 14 in the Archives budget. With these funds, the Archives will hire three additional professionals and increase part-time staff hours. The funds will allow the Archives to open to the public two additional days a week, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30a to 5:00p. The new hours will become effective July 31, 2013. The additional staff will also allow for increased conservation and processing activities of the Archives collections. > >In addition, Archives staff have already begun discussing partnership opportunities to engage USG students and faculty in its work. As part of the USG, the Archives will be able to tap the enormous range of faculty, staff and student talent to assist with its mission. I have had discussions as well with colleagues in the USG who are excited about partnering with the Archives. > >Vice Chancellor John Brown and I had a nice visit to the Archives a couple of weeks ago and several other USG staff have visited. We feel thus far the transition is going smoothly and are excited about the future. We will also prepare a budget request for FY 15 that we will share once we have discussed with the Chancellor and sought approval of the Board of Regents. > >We believe the Archives is heading in a good direction and look forward to the formal relationship beginning July 1, 2013. Thank you all for your strong support of the Archives through the years. We look forward to working with you. >Steve Wrigley

Hammond was expected to pitch his first game – barefooted – Monday night at Lightfoot Park. Pitching for Zebulon this season, he has won all four games in which he has worked. Those who have seen him pitch report that he has lots of speed and unusual control. Most Griffinites will remember Hammond as the barefoot boy who made such a fine record as a forward on the Zebulon High School basketball squad last winter. In the Fourth District tournament he virtually alone eliminated LaGrange, one of the tourney favorites in the opening round. He played basketball, just as he does other sports, barefooted. Hammond told Griffinites who signed him up to play with Pomona that he has worn shoes only twice in [his] life. The first occasion was when he “graduated” from grammar school into high school. On that occasion he placed sand in his shoes so he would “feel at home.” The second occasion was when he was forced to wear shoes in a school play. And even then he “came out” of the shoes before the play was over. Only recently, when he received his diploma from Zebulon High School, he led his classmates on to the school platform on graduation night all decked out in cap and gown but – barefooted. He has refused a scholarship to Oglethorpe University because he was told he would have to wear shoes there. – Griffin News Additional Comments: Durward Travis Hammond, b. 27 January 1920, d. 27 September 2011. Mr. Hammond was one of "the greatest generation," serving his country during WWII, including time spent on Iwo Jima.
