Hi Nan, Chain Carriers were just whoever was available. They might also be interested, as in neighbors of the land parcel being surveyed or even the individual receiving the land being surveyed. Brothers, sons, neighbors, cousins, in-laws - whoever was available could and did serve. It appears that there were officially two CCs per each survey. I always check for the CCs. One starts looking at possible in-laws, cousins, or simply neighbors when you keep seeing the same pair of families helping each other with surveys over the course of years and decades. In a 1780s survey both Peter Reddick and Francis Paris served as CCs for the land parcel assigned to John Michael Burkhalter on Brier Creek. Then, in Burke Co. during the 1830s Nicholas Reddick was a CC for a survey of a land parcel assigned to Henry A. Paris. That Nicholas was the grandson of the earlier Peter's brother and I believe that Henry A. Paris was the grandson of the earlier Francis Paris. There are patterns to be found if you just look for them in the margins of plats.
