According to a recent bio /history of the James brothers ( " Frank and Jesse James-The Story Behind The Legend ", by Ted P. Yeatman,, Cumberland House Publishing Co., Nashville, 2000 ), their father came attended a divinity college in Kentucky. Their mother, Zerelda Cole, was also from Kentucky. Robert Sallee James, born abt 1818. moved with Zerelda to Missouri in 1842 where their children were born. Robert went to the gold fields of California and died there. In time Zerelda remarried, a real feisty woman. Under assumed aliases the brothers lived in Nashville , Tn for a time. A very informative bio of these James boys.
