    3. Funny story! My Grandfather Scott owend/ran turpentine camps from his late teen days in Jackson Co./, Fla, sE Alabama and, I think at one time, somewhere in decatur Co., Ga He was sober as judge during the week but on the weekends he'd make my sweet granny double up on her ol' timey back in the country Baptist faith. My late Uncle, Charles, told me once that he was riding in a buckboard with his father and ol' Charlie, sr handed him a bottle of freshly minted shine and asked if he wnted a toke of it. Unk was about 16 and, wanted to seem manly, took a big swig of this feremented lighning and turned several shades of green and spat the offending mass upon the ground. Grandpa got irate with him and told him, " Boy, that stuff is precious and costly. Why didn't you just spit it back in the jar! I'd a drunk it later!" <ust of been REAL men back then!! My angelic mother, being a career tetotaler would hid his bottles of Who Hit John whenever he and granny came to visit us in jacksonville. he seemed to forget that he'd even bought the stuff. When we moved out of that house in 1959 I bet we found two dozen bottles in her closet, pantry and in the garage. Mom's father, who came from Italy in 1893 used to make home brewed wine in his basement in Rhode Island and frequently enjoyed his handicraft. Her Mom told me years ago that even as little girl Mom tried to hide thge wine production from Grandpa. Even today when we go out to dinner if i order a Bloody Mary she gives me the Italian evil eye and says a Novena for my soul!
