Hello, Carole, Someone told me of an academy in that area that included not only teachers of Latin and Greek but also of Hebrew. Many early schools throughout the U.S. were assisted by Masonic lodges. The Lodge would build a two story frame building and use the upper story for a lodge hall; the lower floor was made available to churches that could not afford their own structure and also to schools. One of those old buildings, restored, is included in the 1850's village of Westville, located at Lumpkin, Ga. One of the first schools in Valdosta was such an arrangement. In a park on the edge of Chinatown in San Francisco there is a bronze plaque with the Masonic square and compasses stating, if I remember correctly, that that was the site of the first public school in California.
