Graham, My view on this is that James Alfred probably went to Florida with members of the Rawls family (there were at least several Rawls families in the Bulloch, Effingham, Screven Co areas). Who was James Alfred with in the 1850 census? Did all those possible parents you named have sons named James? Maybe Sarah Patience Rawls parents in 1850 will give you the clue you need. Did they live near any of those Jones families in Bulloch Co.? Regards and happy hunting.
