    3. Caleb Howell and sons,Caleb and Daniel, had been granted land on Buck Creek in Screven County prior to the revolution. and had a sawmill on the creek. (At the time it was known as Mill Creek) It was not far from the river just north of Nanny Goat Hill. The lower road from Augusta to Savannah passed over the dam. According to Heard Robinson, there was a Calvary skirmish at the dam during the Battle of Brier Creek. Dixon Hollingsworth Wrote several times about the Howells. In a 23 July 1977 Sylvania Telephone Article he states that Caleb fired the salutes which welcomed George Washington to Augusta in 1791. Arthur Gross sent several maps of original grants along the river, Including the Howell grants and where the road passed. The only cemetery in the area was at the site of a tavern just north of the creek with two stones Rice (1841)and Burns(1852) Bill Pfeiffer ----- Original Message ----- From: <MyRx123@aol.com> To: <GASCREVE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2000 12:36 AM Subject: Re: [GASCREVE] Coursey Clues > Judy Mason: > > 1) Do you have any info on any Howells, particularly Caleb, Sr., Caleb, Jr., > Philip, > Thomas, Daniel in Effingham County cemetery books.
