But the William Black's paperwork in Pike County, Indiana can not be the same as the William Black in Screven/Chatham/ County. William Black and four of his sons Henry, John, David, and William Jr. were already living in Pike County, Indiana by 1820. Census 1820 Jefferson, Pike County, Indiana Census 1830 Monroe, Pike County, Indiana Wm Black 70-80 David Black 30-40 Henry Black 20-30 Wm Black 20-30 John Black 30-40 According to Georgia's Roster of the Revolution pb 376 Georgia Soldiers of the Line-Rev War, from original papers in office of the sec of state: Henry Black; John Black; Wm Black, pg 406 shows Capt ____Black, David Black; William Black Lieutenant, William Black, Private pg. 43 - William Black. Certificate of Col E. Clark, 7th Feb 1784. Refugee Soldier. Entitled to bounty of 250 acres. According to Index to the Headright Grants of Georgia 1756-1909 William Black 575 acres granted 1785, Grant Book GGG pg 121 in Franklin County, Georgia According to Survey General's Book A pg 224: John Webb 575 acres, Franklin County, Georgia bounded south by William Black, other sides vacant. Cut by Webb's Creek & Williams Fork of Oconee River, lot 1203, July 14, 1784, pg 407. Georgia's Reconstructed 1790 census shows: Wm Black - Burke County Wm Black - Elbert County Wm Black - Franklin County Deed Wm Black, Grantor to Henry Black, Grantee DB C, 1786-1792 and another deed same transaction DB H 1791-1793 Wm Black - Juror, Franklin County 1791 Source: Colonial Conveyances 1750-1804: Henry Black - Bounty Survey, 575 acres Franklin County, bounded all sides by vacant land. Cut E to W by Black Creek, survey 62. June 7, 1784, Warrant 114. pg. 22. I believe the pension papers found in Indiana belong to this William Black who lived in the 1780's and 90's in Franklin County, Georgia rather than the William Black of Screven/Chatham County, Georgia. I find no records of Revolutionary Service for the Screven County William Black but would like to. I did find this article in The Columbian Museum & Savannah Advertiser: Screven County, William Black, Admr of Thomas Tumblin est, advertises for sale 1st Tuesday in July next at the courthouse in TWIGGS County, Lot 28 in 25th District of that county, containing 202 1/2 acres to be sold under an order of the inferior court of Screven County. Southern Campaign American Revolution Pension Statements Pension app of William Black W9730 Transcribed by Will Graves State of Indiana, Pike County: Pike Probate Court August Term 1833 On this 12th day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and thirty three personally appeared in open court before the Pike Probate Court now sitting William Black a resident of Pike County in the State of Indiana aged eighty one years next December, who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States in the Georgia militia under the following named officers, his Colonel was Elijah Clark [sic, Clarke], his Captain Joseph Neal; that he entered the service in the summer of 1776 and served the whole of the war, drew pay during the whole of the time, served two years under Captain Neal and was in the Battle of Carr's ford [sic, Carr's fort] and Kettle Creek in the State of Georgia. He served one year under Captain Daniel Gunnells and was at the siege of Savannah then went under the command of Captain Neal and rebuilt Neal's Fort on Broad River Georgia which had been destroyed by the Indians. This was in the fall of the year. He remained in the fort until June following in consequence of the troops with which he then served refusing to accept the offered protection of the British. They went and joined the army in North Carolina under the command of General McDowell. Captain Neal staid and joined the enemy. The command of the Company devolved on Lt. Thomas Johnson. While in North Carolina he was in the Battle of Blackstocks [sic, Blackstock's Plantation] where Cols. Shelby and Clarke commanded. He was then at the taking of Paddy McDade's fort under the same Cols Shelby and Clarke. This fort was taken by stratagem without firing a gun. McDade surrendered and with him a British Lieutenant who was in the fort. We swore the men not to bear arms against the United States, deprived them of their arms and returned to General McDowell on Broad River. At the time of taking the fort, the British Army lay encamped within a few miles of the fort. He was afterwards in the Battle of Musgrove's Mill. Here Col. Innis commanded the enemy & Cols. Clarke & Shelby the Americans where we were victorious. There he (William Black) was wounded in the hand by a rifle ball which wound is now plainly to be seen. He continued in North Carolina until September when Lt. Johnson dying of the smallpox & there being no other commissioned officer, the command of the company devolved on him as sergeant. He served as sergeant during all of his service, both before and after the happening of this event except more than three years as he believes but certainly for three years during which last named period he served as Lieutenant. He then returned to Georgia under Colonel Clarke and went to the siege of Augusta but before it was taken, [he] was ordered to the frontiers for their protection with the men under his command. After Augusta was taken he joined Gunnell's fort commanded by Captain Daniel Gunnells. His (Gunnells') Lieutenant was killed and he (Black) discharged the duty of Lieutenant to which office he was elected for at least three years during which period he went three expeditions to the Indian Nation. The Indians were Cherokees. When peace was proclaimed, he returned to his home in Wilkes County, Georgia where he resided before he entered the service. When he first entered the service, he was drafted for a month and afterwards was a volunteer. He has no documentary evidence and knows of no person whose testimony he can produce to prove his service except Hannah Crow which is herewith forwarded. He has no record of his age but was born 1753 in Pennsylvania. He has been living since the war in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and now lives in Indiana. He never received a discharge. He is known to John McIntire, John Almon and Robert Johnson. He hereby [relinquishes] every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on any pension roll of the agency of any State. S/William Black, (his mark) Sworn to & Subscribed the day & year aforesaid. Hi Folks, The following was collected by my distant cousin Dr. Niles Reddick. Niles' ancestry runs back through Brooks, Thomas, Dooly, Screven, Burke, Bulloch, and Chatham Counties into the colonial period of Georgia (much like my own ancestry, except for those southwestern GA counties Brooks, Thomas, and Dooly) . Some of the following are definitely part of the German-origined r320s of Georgia who first arrived in Savannah on December 21, 1737. Especially true are those with Bell family surname connections. There are some errors. Entry # 38 with the surname of Shelly should be for the surname Sheely. My great-grandmother was a Sheely and her kin intermarried with the Reddicks more than once! Let's all thank Niles for looking through the Georgia Secretary of State Archives' "Georigia's Virtual Vault" website & search engine for this information. Dale E. Thanks Henry, I was helping Michael Hotckiss. He is from Susan and Eulie Hotchkiss. I knew my GGGrandfather , Robert D Williams second wife was a Hotchkiss but never dream I would find her. I knew she file for his pension in Chatham Co. Well just last week Michael gave me great news. She moved to Schley Co, Ga and was the last Widow in that county to Collect a CSA Pension. After that they closed the office in 1955. She is buried in Ellaville Cemetery in Schley Co, Ga. When he mention that his GGGrandmother was a Mock, I offer to try and heop him with his Mock Family. Linda's earthlink address keeps coming back to me unopen. She most have changed. Hi Inez, Yes, on surveyed plats there are the: 1 - landowner; 2 - chain carriers - who were often neighbors, kin, or hired help on the farm / plantation (overseer, wheelwright, millwright, etc.); 3 - neighboring landowners (who might be kin or in-laws), including --- a - old neighboring landowners (gone by the time the plat is advertised via public notice), --- b - new neighboring landowners (in the case where the land was sold between the date of the survey and the date when the plat was prepared or advertised). Then, on deeds there are the witnesses - and sometimes those are truly fascinating. For instance, in a 1791 deed between Francis Paris, Sr. and John Michael Burkhalter there is a neighbor named Nicholas 'Rettig' and a witness named Francis 'Rettige'. Francis 'Rettige' later appeared in the county seat of Jacksonboro to attest that he witnessed the sale by JMB of his land to Francis Paris, Sr. (after Screven County had been formed in December of 1793). The thing of this is that Nicholas 'Rettig' is undoubtedly my gggg-grandfather Nicholas Reddick. And Francis 'Rettige' was his brother Francis Reddick. You need to take more than one look at each item. Especially as you become more and more familiar with the surroundings of your ancestors, their kin, and neighbors. So many of the surnames and place-names are so readily mis-interpretable or have changed over time that you can easily be misled. Place-names really do change quite quickly. Thomas Reddick got a 300 acre land grant in 1813 on Brady Branch in Screven County of lands that previously had been granted to William Black prior to the Revolutionary War. Then, in 1847 Thomas had his lands re-surveyed. His lands then included also a parcel originally granted to Robert and Mary Rowan Ivey during the 1790s. Those lands re-surveyed in 1847 were located on Black Creek and near Jackson Branch (which both drain into the Savannah River in the eastern part of Screven County). I'm guessing that the old Brady Branch was renamed either to Black Creek or else Jackson Branch (the two being close together). Of course, this whole picture is complicated by the fact that there is a Brady Branch in the southwest corner of present-day Screven County and which itself empties into the Ogeechee River. I still question my interpretation of where Thomas Reddick got his first 300 acre land grant in 1813. Hi Inez, I got back to looking through the Murray land grant warrants & plats. Here's what else I found. Stephen Murray - 1790. http://content.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/looseplats&CISOPTR=8668&REC=18 Timothy Murray - 1835, with Dempsey Murray adjacent. http://content.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/looseplats&CISOPTR=8887&REC=5 And that's all that I could find. But, there are the names of neighbors and the Chain Carriers (typically neighbors or near kin). That makes for a start. In fact, here's an 1836 plat for my gg-grandfather Nicholas Reddick. At the time of the actual survey one of the adjacent landowners had been Stephen Murray (his land was sold within the following month). This is immediately southeast of present-day Sardis and heading out towards Murray Hill along Reddick Road. http://content.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/looseplats&CISOPTR=9295&REC=5 Then, here's an 1846 plat for Nicholas. This time Jesse Murray served as a Chain Carrier during the survey. http://content.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/looseplats&CISOPTR=8929&REC=6 I would suggest looking for plats of lands granted to members of the Ellison family. They too were nearby - along with the Paris / Parris family. You might find further Murrays as neighbors of those folks. Record the surnames of neighbors as you find and then look for their plats. You may find more Murrays as additional neighbors. Then, go back to the census sheets and see how close everyone was to one another. Hi Beth, Well, there have been hundreds of Reddick women who've been born or lived in the Savannah and Ogeechee River valleys since 1737, when Maria Barbara Radick and her daughter Anna Apollonia arrived with the four male members of the Radick family. So, I have some questions. 1) What is the relationship between Deborah Erleen Reddick and Brenda Weaver Reddick? 2) What are the years of their lives? 3) Which county were they born in, grew up in, and lived in as adults? 4) Who were their parents? Knowing some of that information will assist in narrowing down which of the many Reddick lines to search within. Dale __________________________________ Elizabeth Boyd wrote: > Hi. Deborah Earleen Reddick is the granddaughter of Crawford and Florie Boyd. She might be in her fifties now if I had to guess. Brenda Weaver Reddick is the great grand-daughter of Crawford and Florie Boyd, maybe around thirty or forty. I'm just trying to get in touch with them or any of my family and thought you might know them because of the last name. Thanks. --- "Dale E. Hi Inez, There aren't any really good early maps showing family locations for Burke and Screven Counties. The best & earliest map is the Screven County map of 1911. And it does nothing for Burke County. However, there are some ways of getting around this problem. First, you need to find those pages of the 1820 & 1830 censii of Burke County where the Murrays have been enumerated. Those would be the pages around Murray Hill, Ellison Bridge on Brier Creek, and south of Sardis. Then, use the Georgia Secretary of State's search function for "Georgia's Virtual Vault" finding plats of those Murrays who were in Burke and Screven Counties around the county line between Hiltonia and Sardis. Here's an example URL: http://content.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/looseplats&CISOPTR=8827&REC=15 It's a plat describing a survey of a 200 acre parcel for Dempsey Murray. Timothy Murray was an adjacent land owner. And Henry Murray was a Chain Carrier for the survey. This survey was conducted and the plat was prepared for Dempsey Murray in 1834. So, prepare a list of those several Murrays living in that area when the 1820 and 1830 censii were recorded. Then look for more of these early land grant warrants & plats for the Murrays in the same area. Record the neighbors of the Murrays on those census record sheets and from the plats. Then share what you've found with the Burke & Screven e-mail lists. Some of us will know where certain families were located during that time period (my Reddicks, for instance). Dale E. Hi. My name is Beth Boyd. I am looking for either Deborah Erleen Reddick or Brenda Weaver Reddick. I am trying to track down descendants of Crawford and Florie Jenkins Boyd. Their son Jesse was my grandfather, so I know about that line. I'm trying to find out more about the girls (Edna Earleen, Launa, Exie, Malicina, and Eva Mae) and their children. If you have any information or know of anyone who has any information, please feel free to pass along my e-mail address. I can also be reached by phone at 706-264-5896. Thanks so much, Beth Boyd (Glenn's daughter) --- "Dale E.
