    3. Hi Ann, You need to log off the system (not necessarily restart) and then log back into the computer as a system administrator. Typically, the system will have a default login for the "Administrator" already pre-configured or ready to be configured. It'll be available in the Users folder of the old Control Panel. Basically, you have to be logged onto your computer as a user with administrator privileges if you are going to install the FTM patch. This is the typical security setting for every version of Microsoft Windows since WIN NT & 2000. You cannot install software updates and patches onto the system unless you possess administrative privileges for that computer system. 3. Ann, they are not there yet. Certainly, if you want to. I also have pictures, but they are tied up in FTM right now and you know the trouble with getting them OUT with Vista. Did I send that to you? I just can't remember. And now to James Jones. He owned the property upon which lies the Jones/Young/Blitch cemetery in Bulloch County. Seems like perhaps one of his sons, or perhaps, himself, deeded it with Nevils Church. I need some clarification here, if anyone wants to step in. It's just been so long since we discussed it. James Jones was one of the sons of Francis Jones [Francis Jones died in 1774 and his will is online at the GA Sec of State's website] James Jones died in 1824, and was married to Elizabeth 'Betsy' Mills, daughter of Thomas Mills and _____ Their daughter, Lavinia, married James Young. And then James and Lavinia's daughter, Mary Ann Young, married William Michael Henderson, my gggg grandfather. I don't have those dates available at this posting, but can find them I'm sure if you need them. 3. I'd be happy to post everything to www.findagrave.com but I would need the info. When you have time (and if you can get the photos out of FTM) send all to me and I'll upload. Perhaps the info will help others. Thanks for the info you provided below. I've added all to my database and the folks are coming together. I'd enjoy having the dates if and when you have time. I will work on the suggestions from Dale and Joni and hope to get this problem resolved. What a pain! Good Evening! Ann --- Carole Drexel <drexel410@att.net> wrote: > Ann, they are not there yet. 3. Hi Ann, Some computers are delivered with the option of installing either the older Windows XP or the newer Windows Vista. You should check your system's configuration and the installation / restore CDs (if any) that came with it to determine whether there was an option to install Windows XP. It would be disruptive and painful, but you might be able to go backwards to XP if that option was pre-installed on the system. 2. Ann hmmmm the link was working fine a short while ago. By all means CLOSE FTM . If the patch you just did was for 2006 to Ver 16 try uninstalling it. I did the long instruction thing first then did the patch to Ver 16. Geez, maybe we found another 'secret." I printed out that 6-pager first, read it, circled what I had to do and found it was then a breeze to follow... baby steps.... Good luck! Joni In a message dated 26-Jan-08 04:44:39 P.M. Ann While we shop for user-friendly genealogy s/w if your program is still closing down on you try the following: go to: _http://pastftmcusthelp.com/_ (http://pastftmcusthelp.com/) scroll down the short distance to : ANSWER select #1: "Family Tree Maker Update for Windows Vista" it will open to "Answer #2777" ("answer 2777" is in left margin) Follow those instructions to the "T" and it should solve the shutting-down problem. It's six pages long but it's in "see spot run" and visual-aid format so even I could do it with success! No problem since I did it. Good luck Joni n a message dated 26-Jan-08 03:46:48 P.M. 3. Hi Carole, Hey Ann, Microsoft Vista has proven to be incompatible with many programs that work just fine on earlier versions of Windows such as WIN 2000 Pro and the several variations upon the WIN XP theme. Generally speaking, to run Vista you -often- need a new computer and new applications software. That explains why Family Tree Maker requires patches or replacement to function on Vista. There is actually a corporate IT effort being led by InfoWorld to coerce Microsoft into extending their support and sales of Windows XP beyond the deadline they've set for this Summer. Many corporate customers of Microsoft Windows are avoiding Vista since it creates a need to purchase other software 'upgrades' beyond just what is provided with the Vista OS. I plan on continuing to use my 2002 era HP workstation running WIN 2000 Pro. I've got one Compaq XP system available, but I don't use it because it is relatively code-bloated and really slow (even though it's newer than the HP). I'll likely never purchase any version of Vista. Instead, I'll migrate over to Mac OS-X or a version of LINUX rather than ever again trip up on the never-ending MicroSquish upgrade treadmill.
