I've cut and pasted a Decatur County, GA Mark and Brands that Denise Smiley typed up in 2001. Many of these are earlier Screven and Bulloch County names, including my James and Elijah Remer Young. Hope it gives some clues if you hit a dead end in Screven. Sorry that it's a mess format wise. Scotty, There may be more to this Texas outlaw thing than you think. The Bowen information that I was referring to is for my 3great-grandfather Mark Bowen. His father Clifton Bowen Jr was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, and Mark and at least one of his brothers also were soldiers in that War. They served with a Duplin NC unit, and after the war Clifton and some of his sons moved into the Bulloch Co Ga area. Recently I have been researching my Hall family from Emanuel Co Ga. My 3great-grandfather was Juniper Hall Sr. In researching his family I have found that there is probably some connection, either by blood or marriage, maybe both, to a James family out of the Edgecombe NC area. I've no idea whether this James family was related to the famous outlaw brothers, but perhaps they were.... DNA evidence actually tracks Juniper Hall's ancestry back to Maryland, probably though Pittsylvania Va. One of his sons, James G Hall, moved to Thomas Co Ga. One of James's daughters was Mary Jane. Mary Jane Hall b 1822 Thomas Co Ga married James Alexander Bowen on 10-15-1846 in Thomas Co Ga. James was born abt 1820 or so in Duplin NC. This couple moved to Gadsden Co Fl where they raised their family. They are buried in the Barber Cemtery in Gadsden Fl.There is a book about this family, but I haven't found any information as to James's parents. I suspect that he may be related to the Clifton Bowen family since he was from Duplin NC. So, if you want to pass this message along too, maybe someone can help me. The James Alexander Bowen family has connections to some Bulloch Co families, one I think was a granddaughter who married a Peavy, so any information about this family would be appreciated. I'm enjoying the discussion about the Bowens. I have Abner Bennett Bowen 1857 - 1941 who married Frances Victoria Parrish(daughter of Hiram & Sarah Elizabeth (West) Parrish/Parish in Duval County FL in 1882. I would like to know his parents/siblings, etc. He was born in Douglas, Coffee County GA. he and Frances had 6 children. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might assist me. Dale....Back in the 1950's I pull one end of the chain trying to establish lane lines. They some time didnt fit the plat. Some of the markers was a hilaous joke, such as a big rock in the run of the creek. After hunting this rock for about half day it turn out to be about size of two fist. in a stream that could easy move it around during the rainy season. It was after 1950 that corners was permant Identified. Due to the lack of good land lines and corner cause alot of hard feelings amongst neighbors....Jones
Hi Nan, Chain Carriers were just whoever was available. They might also be interested, as in neighbors of the land parcel being surveyed or even the individual receiving the land being surveyed. Brothers, sons, neighbors, cousins, in-laws - whoever was available could and did serve. It appears that there were officially two CCs per each survey. I always check for the CCs. One starts looking at possible in-laws, cousins, or simply neighbors when you keep seeing the same pair of families helping each other with surveys over the course of years and decades. In a 1780s survey both Peter Reddick and Francis Paris served as CCs for the land parcel assigned to John Michael Burkhalter on Brier Creek. Then, in Burke Co. during the 1830s Nicholas Reddick was a CC for a survey of a land parcel assigned to Henry A. Paris. That Nicholas was the grandson of the earlier Peter's brother and I believe that Henry A. Paris was the grandson of the earlier Francis Paris. There are patterns to be found if you just look for them in the margins of plats. Hi Jones, I'm well aware of how Burke County got broken up in 1793 & 1796 to help form Screven & Jefferson Counties. A bit got traded with Richmond County at one point (near Blythe, I believe). Then a portion was taken to help form Jenkins County. However, the identification of this William Taylor acquiring land near a Kemp's Branch on the north side of Brier Creek strongly points to this being land that became a part of Screven County. Solomon Kemp the Tory and his son Solomon Kemp, Sr. had lands near what later became Hiltonia. Solomon Kemp, Sr. later became Sheriff of Screven County. His brother Daniel Kemp also had lands in Screven County. I suspect that this land parcel granted to William Taylor in 1788 became a part of Screven County when that county was formed in 1793. Dale.. Burke co as you know covered a large area at one time case in point some my descendant got land grants that were later in Jefferson co. The moving of county land lines has been confusing for us researchers.. burke co at one time covered alot of present day Jefferson, Warren and parts of others. Prior to 1800 it gets worst.......Happy Hunting.......Jones ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dale E. Does anyone have any information about a Thomas Lewis who was an adjoining land owner of "Burke" County, and as Dale and Jones have pointed out, could very easily be Screven County...he was an adjoining land owner to an Osborn and Michael Henderson in 1786? Here's the link that Dale provided me for the grant. Could it be correctly stated that one of your ancestors served on a ' chain gang ' ??!! Randy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dale E. Hey Randy, I am rather certain that some of my ancestors actually resemble that comment... ...as frequent Chain Carriers for themselves and their neighbors & kin. My gg-grandfather Nicholas Reddick certainly carried and stretched out chains for the parcel survey of his neighbor and possible cousin Henry A. Paris. Hi Folks, This plat shows an 1802 parcel surveyed for Benjamin Taylor on Ogeechee Creek. He and Daniel Kemp served as Chain Carriers for the survey, so this parcel is linked to the other one in which it was Daniel Kemp's new parcel being surveyed and both men served as CC in that survey. Hi Folks, Continuing with my efforts to find Taylors in Screven County, I've found an 1802 plat for Daniel Kemp in which Benjamin Taylor is both a neighbor and also served as a Chain Carrier for the survey of the land parcel for Kemp. That plat can be viewed at the following GA SOS Archives webpage. Dale E. Reddick ----------------- http://content.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/looseplats&CISOPTR=2293&REC=18
Hi Folks, Here's another plat prepared for William Taylor in 1788. It was situated near Kemp's Branch on the north side of Brier Creek. This would have been near Solomon Kemp (either the Tory or his son who became Sheriff of Screven Co.), east of present-day Hiltonia - most likely. This plat for 100 acres is also adjacent to a land parcel he already has. I used the search function at the GA SOS archives webpage to look through results of searching with the phrase "Brier Creek". I also checked the phrases "Briar Creek" and "Bryar Creek". This brings up results from the upper portion of Screven County (in early years this was Burke County) and through much of Burke County. Hi Folks, The following webpage URL leads to a plat prepared for Solomon Kemp of Screven County. An adjacent land owner and chain carrier for the survey of the land parcel was a William Taylor.
