Paul Colson was the first husband of Elizabeth Blackshear, Henry Wyche the second. Another discovery, Paul Colson was a son of Sanders Colson and Winifred Braswell, according to several sources. Winifred was a daughter of Kindred Braswell and Rhoda ukn. Juniper Hall Sr's first wife is thought to have also been a daughter of Kindred and Rhoda. Elizabeth Blackshear was a daughter of Edward Blackshear ane Emily Goodwin Mitchell. Her first husband was Henry Wyche and her second husband was Paul Coalson. He was born in Burke Co Ga and was a lawyer. Some sites at Rootsweb have Edward Blackshear Coalson as their son, so I think that is probably your answer. There is actually quite a bit of information on the Blackshears and some of these other families. The history of Melrose plantation is interesting, you should look it up. Carol
Carole and Dale, It dawned on me that Paul Coalson may be related to Jane Adams. If my hunches are correct, William Hall and Jane Adams who married in 1805 in Tattnall Co Ga were the parents of John Choice Hall b 1807 who married Mary Louise Blackshear. Jane Adams was a daughter of Colson Adams and Rachel Cason who moved from Pitt Co NC. Colson Adams was a son of Archibald Adams and Sarah Colson of Dorchester Md. I can't find out much about these Colsons. Sarah's father was Thomas Colson married to a Margaret unknown. Dale, do you think these Colsons are related to the Screven Co ones? Carol B. Miller

Carole, I'm not sure, but it's funny you should ask. I think he would be a grandson of Edward Blackshear and Emily Goodwin Mitchell, who happen to be the parents of the Mary Louise Blackshear who married a John Choice Hall in Thomas Co Ga in 1828. Mary was born in Pulaski Co Ga in 1813. This John Choice Hall is said to be born b 1810, but I think he may be the John Choice Hall b 1807 that I mentioned earlier today. According to the Blackshear researchers, both Mary Louise and John Choice died in the 1830's. This couple had two sons, James Thomas and Edward Blackshear Hall, born in 1830 and 1831 or thereabout. My theory is that Mary died in childbirth. Her mother raised the two boys. You need to look up the history of the Wyche plantation,or Melrose Plantation as I think it may be called. I think that a Paul Coalson may have been instrumental in its development, I can't remember all of the details. Probably Edward is a descendant or relative of his. Juniper Hall b 1825, brother of Mary Jane Hall and Iradell Hall, was murdered on the plantation in 1873. Do you know a researcher named Gerry Hill? She has lots on the Goodwins and Mitchells, and maybe could answer your question, Let me know if you want her e-mail. Carol B. Hey Carole, Is it possible that this Coalson is perhaps part of the Colson family found around North Newington Baptist Church? That family came to Effingham County and settled along the Savannah River prior to the Revolutionary War. Randy and Scotty, I vaguely recall also hearing that the James brothers had relatives in Georgia. Back to the Halls in Gadsden Fl, I did find an indirect tie to the James family. A James Hilton Hall died in 1837 in Gadsden Fl. He was a son of William Hall born 1737 Duplin NC and his third wife Catherine Moulton/Molton. William's first wife was Margaret Pearsall, daughter of Edward Pearsal and Catherine James. Another Hall that I found living in Gadsden Fl was a Jane Kenan Hall, third wife of William Hall Jr who was born in 1772 in Duplin NC. His first wife was Mary Houston and his second wife was Nancy Rutledge. William died in 1825 in NC and Jane then moved to Gadsden Fl, presumably because she had family there. In 1850 her nephew Lafayette Kenan was living with her and was her heir after her death in 1858. These Halls were all from Duplin NC, where James Alexander Bowen was also from. I don't know if either of these Halls were related to the Juniper Hall family or not, I am trying to find out if they might have been related. Besides Mary Jane who married James Alexander Bowen, her brother Iradell also lived in Gadsden Fl. Iradell married Narcissus Hendry in 1858 in Gadsden Fl. Narcisssus was a daughter of Alexander and Margaret Henrdry, who I think were from the Screven/Bulloch Co area. Iradell's second wife was Arabella Johnston, who had ties I believe to the Kenans and some other of the Duplin NC families. I am also tracking some Halls in Leon Co Fl, in particular a Major William Hall who moved there in 1824 from Pulaski Co Ga. I think he is the William Hall who married Jane Adams in 1805 in Tattnall Co Ga. They had a son named John Choice Hall (also the name of my 2great-grandfather) b 1807 whopossibly was the John Choice Hall who married Mary Louise Blackshear. He married Martha McGriff in 1832. Another of William and Jane's children apparently was Queen Ann Hall who married Augustus Harris Johnson b Emanuel Co Ga whose mother was a Lanier with ties to Screven/Bulloch. I do think these Halls had to be related to Juniper, but so far haven't been able to trace William Hall further back. Living three doors away from William Hall in 1830 was Green Hill Chaires whose first wife, Hannah Hathaway Averitt was killed in an Indian attack. His second wife was Susan Kornegay, widow of Kindred Hall. Kindred Hall was an heir and most likely a son of Juniper Hall Sr. Kindred lived in Thomas Co Ga. I also think William and Jane had a son named William and one named Robert H Hall (married Mary Cosby). Does anyone have information on any of these people? Carol B. Miller
Oy! Guten you and so, what a messuganah! I will re-check that James boys bio and see if there is any mention of Georgia connections that I overlooked. interesting earlier discussions of surveying, chain gangs, and metes and bounds. I'm sure there is 'bound' to be more than 'metes' the eye in this surveying business. For a good view of how much early surveying work was done, one cneedd only read some of the bios of Lincoln and his early life at New Salem Village and how he learned to be a surveyor. I saw some of his own surveying equipment at the museum there at new Salem and at the Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfiled, Illinois. Hi, All, My paternal grandmother, Laura Mock Scott, always insisted that she was the fourth cousin of Frank and Jesse James. Now, according to Screven County marriage records, Laura's grandfather, John A. W. Cubbedge, married Mary Ann James in 1844, so that may have been so. Also, I remember reading somewhere that Frank and Jesse's father's family were originally from Georgia, but I have not been able to substantiate that. Lastly, in a letter written in 1935 by my great-grandfather, John Randolph Mock, he stated that his mother-in-law (Mary Ann Cubbedge) was "a Jewess orphan named Emanuel, who had been adopted by the Evans family". If this is confusing to you, you can rest assured that I am as well! I hope that this helps someone though. Happy hunting! Scotty **************Start the year off right. Scotty, Thanks, that's great. As to the James family that I mentioned, the one that is of the most interest is that of Amos Love and Margaret James, who I think were the parents of the John Love who was co-executor of Juniper Hall Sr's will. I also think John was the husband of Juniper's daughter Elizabeth. They lived in Laurens Co Ga, and Amos was the son of Amos Love and Mary Ingram. There were a number of families that seemed to intermarry a lot and move around together, others being the Kenan and Norris families, and the Braswell/Bracewell family. Carol, if my memory serves me right mike May's Bowen ancestor was James Alexander Bowen. I'll pass this e mail onto Mike. I recently also finished an excellent bio on Frank and Jesse James. I will re-check for their families' origins prior to Missouri and let you know if it mentions No Carolina. Oh and don't forget the CC's that helped with the surveys because their rocks were rolled too far away or restacked a little bit more easterly so the plow wouldn't hit them or the boundary tree wound up as firewood one winter and a new tree was blazed in its place. Made for interesting neighborhood chats I imagine. But the best one had to be "to the middle of the river" and then the river moved and not to your advantage and you lost land. Deborah Byrd
Hi Folks, I'm assisting a cousin in search of someone from Screven County. This has to do with a 19th century Brannen woman who -may- have married a Mulligan man. He's looking for the marriage of Pauline E. Brannen, possibly in the 1885-87 time frame. Her parents were Barny and Eugenia Brannen who had a sawmill and farm in Screven Co. It's possible or perhaps likely that she probably would have been married in Screven County. It is possible that she may have married a Mulligan, but this is unknown and quite uncertain. If so, then he and she would have been the parents of Eugene Mulligan, grandson of Eugenia Brannen. Thanks for any help. Dale E. Reddick
Thanks for all the comments I had never seen anything that 'seemed' on a professional basis but always wondered. I did note that it always seemed to be a neighbor or family member who helped! Dale, you are right sometimes these helpers lead you to tying families together!!
