Cheryl, It is good to meet a cousin. You're right - Jasper Philip Newton "Newt" Oglesbee was the son of Mary Ann Elizabeth Hillis and William R. Oglesbee. Mary Hillis Oglesbee's older sister, Mariah Hillis, married Green Washington Oglesbee. I believe that Green and William were cousins, I know that they weren't brothers. Anyway, apparently Newt was working for his Aunt Mariah, and was living with them during the census. By the way, Louise Oglesbee Chandler lives in his old place, near the Burke-Screven County line. Furthermore, I recently ran across the Confederate Widow's pension, where Mary stated that she was the widow of William Oglesbee, who was in Company D, 48th Georgia Infantry. He died of dysentery (according to family legend, he'd eaten a poisoned apple and died) at Mount Jackson, Virginia on 30 Oct 1862, and is buried there in a marked grave. Interestingly enough, Green Oglesbee also died on this day, but in Staunton, Virginia of wounds received at the Battle of Antietam, Maryland. Strange coincidence, isn't it? Anyway, I plan to visit William's grave this summer. Mary Ann Elizabeth Hillis Oglesbee is buried next to her parents, Mariah McMillan and John H. Hillis, at Bethlehem Cemetery in Burke County near Girard. My great-grandparents, Eugenia Ann Virginia "Genia" Oglesbee and William Thomas Morris, along with Eugenia's sister, Mary "Arelya" Ann Oglesbee Wilkins, are buried next to Mary. I hope that this is of help. Please keep in touch. Happy hunting! Scottie Scott
Is there a cemetery book for Screven County? I am looking for anything on Lucretia PHILLIPS MILLER who was enumerated in the 1860 census. Lucretia Phillips married Lewis MILLER in Wilkes County, GA., moved to Early County, GA and then on to Screvens County. One of her four children, Lucinda Miller GILMORE, married William Green GILMORE and moved to Union County, AR/Union Parish, LA. Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Louis kinfindr@telepak.net
When I reviewed some census records today, I came away with a question. In case some of the Oglesbee cousins have some information, I decided to post here. In the 1870 census for Screven County, I found the following family. I think Mariah may be the wife of George Washington "Green". What I am interested in is who is the Jasper listed as living with her. Mariah 50 Washington 20 Russell 18 Newton (I think) 16 Lawton 15 Dawson 15 Elford 12 Jasper 23 Mary 20 Thomas 2 To explain the interest, Jasper Newton, son of William R Oglesbee, is my great grandfather. Face it Jasper is not the most common name, so it caught my interest. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. Cheryl Oglesbee Flowers dc32666@aol.com
This is a long shot, but I wondered if the Newton you are seeking is in any way connected to the Newton Walker, b. abt 1835/38, who is listed in 1850 Screven census with father, Walter Walker, and mother Elizabeth (surname possibly Newton). The below was John M. Poythress' unit along with many, many other Screven County Georgians. Hope it will be interesting. Hope also that some of you Screven Countians can pass along more history of the unit. May 6, 2000 Battle-scarred flag goes home to Georgia The Associated Press EHRHARDT -- The 135-year-old flag was handled just as carefully as it had been when the 47th Georgia Infantry was defeated in Rivers Bridge Confederate Memorial Association celebration. When Gen. William T. Sherman's Union troops took Rivers Bridge and the Confederates who survived the battle surrendered a few months later, Capt. Benjamin S. Williams hid the colors between his saddle blankets and took it to his South Carolina home. On Friday, the flag was returned to its home state in a special ceremony by the Rivers Bridge Confederate Memorial Association. Nearly 300 Confederate descendants cheered and cried as speakers, including Lt. Gov. Bob Peeler, talked of honor, heritage, courage, valor and sacrifice. Created by Esther Cohen Williams, wife of Col. Gilbert William Martin Williams of the 47th Georgia, the battle flag that flew at Rivers Bridge in February 1865 was made from materials Mrs. Williams had on hand -- two red shawls, some white silk, pieces of furniture upholstery and fringe from her curtains. In 1938, the family of Benjamin Williams presented the 47th Georgia flag to the Rivers Bridge Memorial Association, and it remained at the state park until it was stolen in the 1980s. The flag was recovered about a year later and given to the State Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism in Columbia. In exchange for the original, the Rivers Bridge association received a replica made by Mary Adelle O'Grady, the great-great-granddaughter of the woman who made the original flag. "My heart is very full today," O'Grady said, recalling the first time she saw the flag during a visit to Columbia in 1997. "I have to tell you, it's still an emotional experience for me when I see the battle scars, when I see the stitches, when I think about all the men that served under that relic."
