Barb, Hi. How's everything? Are you sure you aren't looking for Hilltonia? That is north of Sylvania off of Hwy 25,I think. Cyndi Kinkel
Barb, You can order County Postoffice and Postmaster records from the national archives. There are usually 2 rolls -- one record of every postoffice and one roll for each postmaster. You will find a few details about any place that had a postoffice in your county. Barb, There was a byline labelled "Hillis, Ga." in the newspaper, TRUE CITIZEN, which is a newspaper still in existence today in Waynesboro, Burke County, Georgia. From talking to a cousin, Louise Oglesbee Chandler, she lives on the old Hillis Farm which belonged to her great-grandparents, Mary Elizabeth Hillis and William R. Oglesbee. This farm is a little east of Millhaven Road, and is almost on the Screven County Line. It is also near Bethlehem Church, where most of the old Hillises are buried. Hope that this helps. Happy hunting. Scottie
Cheryl, what book did you find that in? Evidentally my Great grand Mother was living there in 1903. I would like to try and find out who she might have been living with. Barb
I don't have much, but I have one book that describes it as: Hillis - A village located near the Screven County line. In 1900 it reported a population of 104. I have several post cards stamped with a Hillis postmark so I do know at one point in time there was a post office there. Hope this helps some Cheryl
Can anyone tell me anything about the towns of Hillis or Haides. I have an 1895 that shows them both as being north of Sylvania. Hillis looks like it would be near rt 23 right at the county line. Haides looks like it would be one the Savannah river near where 301 crosses. Thanks Barb ID472@aol.com

Hi Sharon, Thanks Suzi
BURKE family from Burke>Jenkins Co. reunion Sunday, July 2. Anyone interested contact Jim Burke--- getjdb@aol.com
Suzi, I do have this Joseph J Mock. He was the son of John DAvid Mock. I think this Joseph J Mock died in Baldwin County, Georgia. Can anyone confirm this? The James J Mock ( James Joseph on son's SS Application) married Beulah Hann and died before the 1920 census. He is very possibly the son of Lodowick G Mock. Lodowick G Mock did have a son James b. about 1873., but nothing more is known of him. He married 1910, but cannot be found on the census, by the 1920 census he was dead. Thanks for responding. Sharon Davis
Hi Everyone If anyone of you are connected to the above families in anyway either directly or indirectly that have any old photos of these families please contact me immediately. I am in the process of gathering a photo history of my different families. If you can provide me with any photos, original or scanned that are presentable enough to recognize the individual it would be appreciated. I do not want to keep the photos forever only long enough to make cys or scanned them, then return then the rightful owner. I have cys of photos on the Hodges, Colson, Aust and Stewart families I am willing to either give cys or scanned them for you. Some of these photos are well over 100 yrs old. Again I must state that these are only Screven & Effingham County families. You can contact me at: William C. Reeves, 504 Eagles Nest Rd, Dudley NC 28333-6170, 919-736-3974 or by e-mail, wreeves@sparkhost.com. Will be looking forward to hearing from you soon. Bill Reeves

I need help to confirm that Joseph James Mock was the son of Lodowick G Mock. Lodowick had a son James Mock born about 1873. I determined from obits that he died between 1918-1923. There was a James J Mock who married Beulah Hann in Screven County Georgia 17 April 1910. They had these known children: James Embree Mock b. 28 Jan 1913 d. April 1956 Homer Lod Mock b. 6 April 1917 d. May 1973 Beulah was a widow by the 1920 census. Can anyone help me with this or know of someone who can? Sharon Davis
