    2. This was great. You have given me a wonderful visual image of where Hillis would be. I have family from Hillis and Girard. In fact Several Census records show some of my Oglesbee family in Burke county on the Stoney Bluff Rd you mentioned. In fact, that is where the cousin (Louise Chandler) I am plnning on visiting still lives. Thank you so much. Cheryl Flowers

    3. Hi Barb, I looked at the U.S. 1895 Map Site and saw that Hillis did lie in Burke Co., between the Wade Plantation and Girard. I have a Georgia DOT General Highway Map of Burke Co. from 1987 and there is a Hillis Road appearing on that map. Godbee Rd. is intersected by Dixon Rd. and the continuance of Godbee is then named Hillis Rd. Upon entry in Screven Co. Hillis Rd. becomes Sunbury Rd. (which runs into Screven Co. CR15 - Stony Bluff Rd. [not to be confused with the Burke Co. CR60 - Stony Bluff Rd.]). Hillis Rd. is located approximately 33 o 00 o North and 81 o 38 o West. If Hillis Rd. passes through or adjacent to the site of Hillis, then the community of Hillis was about equidistant from Girard, Millhaven and the intersection of Stony Bluff Rd., River Rd., and Oglethorpe Trace at the Burke and Screven Cos. line. It seems to have rested in the middle of the triangle represented by those three points. Close by are: St Paul Church; Bethesda Church; St. John's Church; Corinth Church; and Oak Grove Church. I hope that this information has been useful. Dale E. Reddick ________________________________ ID472@aol.com wrote: > Dale, > sorry about the problem. 2. Cyndi, I was basically kidding. My mother went to school there, graduating in 1945. Anyway, one of my cousins on the Scott side is a Hill, and she kiddingly? says that they are going to take over everything there! As a matter of fact, the last time I was at Murray Hill (Murryhill on the old maps), someone had hyphenated "Murray-Hill" as if it was named after both of the families. However, please accept my apologies - I did not mean to offend you. Happy hunting! Scottie

The brick wall surrounding it is in good condition except of one crack caused by a tree root. Unfortunately, some xxxxxxx removed every headstone in the cemetery sometime within the last 30 years. Continuing South on 17, the next dirt road to the right (1/4 mi.?) goes to the old site of Cameron; no discernable trace remains. I looked for the old Cameron cemetery which is supposed to be near that dirt road but was unable to find it. Further South, there is a road to the left. Just beyond it is some sort of log storage or paper mill operation. Immediately beyond that is a stand of young pine trees within which is another cemetery (Evans???) which is fairly clean and unvandalized. Should you find that Cameron cemetery, please let me know: there were some intermarriages between them and the Youngs. Jim

    2. Barb, Glad you have found Hillis. I remember Hiltonia from when I was little. So many of these small places have just disappeared. We were looking for the longest time forCameron, and a trace of a gravesite somewhere around Jarrell's Pond, on the other end of Screven Co., off of Hwy 17. And there are many details that often lead nowhere. Looks like you are finally making some headway, however. Regards, Cyndi

    2. Scotti, Hi! Thanks! I just threw the name out to Barb. (My mispelling of HILtonia, named for HILTON, not for the hill, or the HILL family, was a typo). The name and place are very familiar to me - at least as it once was. I used to go there often as a child when we lived at Millhaven. Regards, Cyndi Kinkel

    3. Hello, again, Hiltonia, Georgia is passed through on GA state highway 24. Highway 24 passes to the Northwest through Sardis, Alexander, and Waynesboro while passing through Burke Co. U.S. 25 passes through nearby Bulloch, Jenkins, and Burke Cos. GA state highway 23 passes through Girard and Sardis in Burke Co. and then passes through Millen, county seat of Jenkins Co. I hope that this information has been helpful. 2. Cheryl, What I have is 4 enveolpes. They all came out of Sylvania and went to Hillis. They are all addressed like this; Miss Alvarine Mathews To Mr (or Ms.) N. H. Lovett Hillis, Ga. On one it looks like N. R. Lovett. They are dated July 21 thru 29 1905. Alvarine's aunt Maggie Medlock married a John F. Lovett. They are both buried in Sylvania Cemetery. The only children I know of are John H. b1882, Archibald B. b1884 (he was a judge in Sylvania) and Sadie O. b1887. I have no idea who N.R. or N.H. could be. I would very much appreciate you taking the time to speak to Ms. Chandler for me, as long as it is not a problem. It is so nice of you to offer. Thank you very much Barb

    3. Hello, I was just looking at a copy of the 1911 map of Screven Co. and could not yet find either 'Hillis' or 'Haides.' If you have a 1895 map of the county then this would also include part of what is now Jenkins Co. Could Hillis be to the West of the bend in the county line that now occurs at Beaver Dam Creek. None of the names for school districts appears to be a close match for your two names. There are 42 of them and the Hurst district (#5) with its church and school lies Northwest of Hiltonia and West of Millhaven. I'll keep looking at the names for the Post Offices shown on the map. But, nothing seems to match up so far. Dale E. 2. I wrote down the title but not the author. The title is An Intelliegent Student's Guide to Burke County Georgia History. I also found another description in A History of Burke County, Georgia 1777-1950 by Albert M Hillhouse. There comments are: Hillis: A post office established bewteen Mobley's Pond and Waynesboro. Henry C. Hillis was the first postmaster. Later the name became attached to the community it served. In 1900, population stood at 104. I copied both of these from reference books at the Genealogical Library in Augusta, Ga. Hope it helps. Cheryl Flowers

    2. Cyndi, Hillis is not far from Hiltonia, probably about 7 miles as the crow flies. By the way, it's not HILLtonia, but HILtonia. It was named for the Hilton family, not for the hill that it sits on nor the Hill family. It seems that people are forgetting that! Happy hunting! Scottie
