Caleb Howell and sons,Caleb and Daniel, had been granted land on Buck Creek in Screven County prior to the revolution. and had a sawmill on the creek. (At the time it was known as Mill Creek) It was not far from the river just north of Nanny Goat Hill. The lower road from Augusta to Savannah passed over the dam. According to Heard Robinson, there was a Calvary skirmish at the dam during the Battle of Brier Creek. Dixon Hollingsworth Wrote several times about the Howells. In a 23 July 1977 Sylvania Telephone Article he states that Caleb fired the salutes which welcomed George Washington to Augusta in 1791. Arthur Gross sent several maps of original grants along the river, Including the Howell grants and where the road passed. The only cemetery in the area was at the site of a tavern just north of the creek with two stones Rice (1841)and Burns(1852) Bill Pfeiffer ----- Original Message ----- From: <MyRx123@aol.com> To: <GASCREVE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2000 12:36 AM Subject: Re: [GASCREVE] Coursey Clues > Judy Mason: > > 1) Do you have any info on any Howells, particularly Caleb, Sr., Caleb, Jr., > Philip, > Thomas, Daniel in Effingham County cemetery books. I have been looking for another clan, McGlohon's, Peacock's, Warren,s Just looked the names up and found this little tid bit Thursday March 1,1877 CUTTING AND SHOOTING SCRAPE. A terrible cutting and shooting scrape occurred in the lower part of Emanuel County a few days age, the parties being Thomas Collins, Sr. Thomas Collins Jr. and William Collins.-the last named being brothers and related to the first mention. Tom Collins Jr received three frightful wounds with a knife in the hands of Tom Collins Sr., One of the wounds was in the thigh, cutting to the bone and measuring seven inches in length.Another was across the face, cutting the nose in two. The other was in the side, just below the the ribs..Inturn Tom Collins Sr. was shot three times by his wounded antagonist, one ball taking effect near the spine and penetrating the lungs, anothe through the neck and a third in the arm. Neither were dead at last account. Source Dawson Journal, Dawson Regards Bren
Hi again, I want to post my COURSEYS again in the hopes that someone might have a clue about first wife of William A. Coursey. William A. COURSEY b. about 1785 was married and had two daughters: Nancy b. 1816 married Seaborn COLLINS of Emanuel County Winiford b. 1821 married Jacob Hollinsworth of Tatnall County. William then married Sarah COLLINS in 1827 and had 8 more children. If this William was realted to William A. Coursey of Screven county (the sheriff) and anyone has any knowledge of My Williams first wife., I would sure appreciate knowing. Could it have been Mary Monk of Bulloch County? Nancy
Victoria, It's been a while since I was there, but as far as I can remember, all of the stones had names. I can't say with 100% certainty that there were no broken or buried stones, but I do not remember seeing any. I also have a short history of the church that a cousin shared with me, and it includes several names of the founders contributers to the church. No Howell names are mentioned here, either. About 8 or 10 years ago, some members of the Roberts family (several in this cemetery) put out a cookbook and used the proceeds to clean this cemetery. It is now very clean and well kept, though it is no longer used. the last burial that I see there is in 1954. Hope this helps. Cindy: What were the first listed burial dates? Victoria
Dale. If it isn't too much trouble I would love to have a scanned copy of the two Coursey Landings Roads that you refer to. I am sure it would be very helpfull in the Cousey research. That is my wife's family. Alfred
Cindy: Did all the stones at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery have names? Thanks, Victoria
Victoria, Saw your question about Howells in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. I have an index of those names (only 27 stones there). There are no Howells there. Hope this helps. Jean, The Hand (now Hann) Family is a very old Screven County family, of whom I've found references as early as 1769. They were originally clustered around Hurst Baptist Church, along with the Reddicks and Oglesbees. Anyway, Kathleen Overstreet Hann lives in Sylvania and runs Kay's Flower Shop and Screven County Monument Company. She was married to Rudolph Hann (now deceased), but his brother is still alive and lives just off of South Main Street. I just can't remember his name at present. The Hanns are related to me on the Cubbedge side, and I have done some limited research on their family. As far as I know, the Sowells have always been in the Newington area, and spread over into Southeast Bulloch County, near Leefield, Stilson, and Brooklet. I don't know who you can get in touch with about them, but there are several books on the Sowell Family in the Statesboro Library. Hope that this helps. Please keep in touch, and happy hunting! Scottie
Did my Howell information make it to the list? I submitted two different messages referring to them here in Effingham county. Judy 2jv@bellsouth.
Yes, i am familiar with emmett S. Coursey. Myr records and that of Effingham County state that he was born in 1880 and died in 1951. He was the son of C.S. Coursey. would love to exchange info with anyone related to this family. I have Emmett but no info on his wife, yet. I do have and olde newspaper article that Emmett place in the Springfield Heralds. His father, elderly at the time of the article, had disappeared from their home in Egypt Ga. about two weeks prior. C.S. olace the little article to ask for the communitys help in locating him. I believe that this was in 1913. Two years later another article appeared. It appears that a Hunter had while hunting in the wood, found the remains and personal articles of C..S Coursey. Some two years later the mystery was finally solved. Does this time frame fit in with your Emmett Coursey? I can also check the county records for his marriage to a Kate Dixon. Thanks Dot and Curtis and Alfred, Judy 2jv@bellsouth.net
Judy: Yes, I got both of your transmissions. Victoria
Jean: Hunters is just east of the Plantation Airpark off Hwy 21 south of Sylvania. It is the first crossroads north of Newington turn right and when you reach the railroad you are in the center of Hunters. It is between Sheppards and White Hill on the railroad. A good Topo map of the entire state of Georgia that shows many of the old town names is readily available at your local K-Mart. It is in atlas form and put out by DeLorme P.O. Box 298, Yarmouth, ME 04096 phone 207 846 7000 or check them out on the web at www.delorme.com Sincerely, Bob GENJEANH@aol.com wrote: > Can anyone with the maps tell me if Hunters, Georgia is in Screven County? > Thanks, > Jean > > ============================== > Search ALL of RootsWeb's mailing lists in real time. > RootsWeb's Personalized Mailing Lists: > http://pml.rootsweb.com/
Jean: No, sorry. None of the names you mentioned have shown up in my research. I continue to hope for some more Howell info from Screven/Effingham. Would love to see copies of actual records began to surface. Thanks, Victoria
Scottie: Do you know if there are any Howells buried in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery? Also, do you know if there are any remains, or photos of the old plantation? Thanks, Victoria
Hi Jean, My father and Clarence A. Sowell were first cousins. If I can be of any help please ask. Clarence's parents were Wiley Morgan Sowell and Rozzie Flythe Sowell. I have images of their cemetary headstones and even some turn-of-the-century pictures that they sent to my great-grandmother and grandmother. They, Clarence, and several of Clarence's siblings are buried at Buch Creek Methodist Church. Dale E. Hello All, Indeed, Mr. Lowery is correct. Hunters is bisected both by Hunters Road (CR087) and by the Ogeechee railroad. Hunters Rd. is located at about mile post 9 on GA 21 and is the road opposite to Airport Road. Hello All, As I said before, the 1911 map of Screven County is a custom, one-off effort by a local surveyor. It has no connection with the USGS and is not a topographic map of any sort. It almost looks 'hand-drawn.' Dale E. Reddick ________________________________ VKRatliff@aol.com wrote: > SCB: wow, how do you get them from years that far back?
