    1. [GASCREVE] Re: Topo maps of Screven County?
    2. Dale E Reddick
    3. Hi Barb, Yes, there are other types of maps that can be very useful. First, there are the STATE produced GENERAL HIGHWAY MAPs for each county. I have examples of these for many counties in both Georgia and South Carolina. These maps display the present-day roads, stream courses, bridges, lakes, churches, towers, etc., and often - cemetaries lying within a county. They are invaluable for situations where you don't want to get lost in an unfamiliar area. Or, for finding the name of a lost cemetary (e.g., the Coursey cemetary lying just off of Springfield Rd. in Effingham Co.). You can call information in Atlanta (404-555-1212) and ask for the Georgia Department Of Transportation number. Once you have their general information number, then you can call and ask for the Map Room. Once connected with those folks, you can checks on current prices of maps and then send in a check to order a set of desired maps. South Carolina offers two sizes of county General Highway Maps. The smaller versions are comparable to the Georgia maps and are handy to use. The larger maps are more than a handful of paper. But, they are easier to read. Also, there are map books composed of these same county maps. I have one for South Carolina. I bought it at a bookstore in Beaufort, S.C. I haven't run across one for Georgia, yet. I probably haven't looked for one... I have 50 or more county maps for Georgia. Another excellent type of map to get is the series of mapbooks and CD-ROM maps produced by _DeLorme_. I have examples of these mapbooks for both Georgia and South Carolina. The GEORGIA ATLAS & GAZETTEER is wonderfully useful. The SOUTH CAROLINA ATLAS & GAZETTEER has even more information displayed in that mapbook (i.e., smaller state - more information displayed). These maps combine the features of highway map with much of the information found in USGS topographic maps. The degree of the topographic detail is _less_, but still useful. In many instances both field roads and logging roads are shown on these maps. Quite impressive. And, being in book format - easy to handle. Go to www.delorme.com. I hope that this helps. 2. Thanks for the help. No I haven't tried Burke Co. But it gives me a place to look. Plus I've been keeping a data base on the McGlohon's and different spellings. I have Green's from Emanuel County, Peacock and Warren from Wilcox,Dodge, Laurens, and other counties. John's daughter Kate was my grandmother, she had 12 children and of course they went on from their. I went all the way back to Dublin on Samuel Young Green's side of the family. I only have 1-Aunt left from the Green. She is in her late 60/early 70's. And she wants me to find out who here mother's family was. I just hope I can do that before she dies. Not only that but I want my child to know about my family. Since she is the only child i will ever have. Anyway thanks for the help....... Regards Bren

    1. Re: [GASCREVE] HOLLINGSWORTH's Book Address to Purchase
    2. Victoria Hi, Yes, the name Howell, have articles in the book concerning Caleb, Caleb Sr., Samuel, Col Daniel .One item written by Frances L. Beard, one by John L. Stone, two by Dixon Hollingworth. There are a total of 25 references to the name of Howell. This does not mean only 25 Howells names, but 25 articles where the name of one or more Howell name appears in the book. The book does not have the first name in the index, it has only the last name. When reference is made with a "T" as T10, This indicates the NAME was mentioned in the first part of the book, which is giving the History of Screven Co. When reference is made with an "F" as F196 this indicates the NAME has appeared In an article written by a family member or by Dixon Hollingsworth. To me, it appears that the Howell name is well represented in this book, by appearing in the history section ten times, four articels about family members, and then the Howell name appears in .eleven more different articles in the book. It is a beautiful book, one that I repeatly find additional information, I usually have it in the car when I go anywhere to do research. The cost of $66.00 I have many times saved in time and travel expenses.

    3. Hello All, Among the family entries there are none for CANEDY, CANNADY, or KENNEDY. There is a single reference to a CANADY in the family entry # F391. This is a Sheppard family entry and concerns a Ruby Canady (born May 3, 1916) who married a Thomas Edward Sheppard (born August 23, 1915). There are four references to KENNEDYs: # F130; # F202; T10; and T11. The first of these refers to an EVANS family with a Marjorie Waters Kennedy being an Evans descendent. The second of these index references is unclear to me. I read the Morgan family entry and didn't note any Kennedy connection. The third entry concerns 'Screven County Land Grants.' There is a Darby Kennedy listed as having lived between Stoney Bluff and Burton's Ferry in1755. There is also a Hugh Kennedy living between Brier Creek and Poor Robin in 1762. This Hugh Kennedy is mentioned in T11 as the owner / operator of a commercial cowpen below the mouth of Brier Creek. In reference to the KENNEDY surname - there are quite a number of KENNEDYs buried in the cemetary at McBride Methodist Church. Earlier, I mentioned four entries relating to Courseys in the "Screven County History." They are: # F209; # F259; # F396; and T17. The first entry details a Susan A. Jones, who married a William A. Coursey (she was the daughter of Francis Jones, Jr. and Polly Mills). The second entry details a Joyce Coursey who married a John Ellis Lee. The third entry has a William Alto Coursey as a grandchild of Solomon Daniel and Myrtie Louise Jeffers Smith. The T17 entry refers to "A New County." William Coursey is one entry within a list of citizens within the newly created Screven Co. of 1793. For those interested in the surname Howell: the T10 entry lists a Caleb Howell, Sr. as living between Brier Creek and Poor Robin in 1760. And, a William Howell in 1762; Philip Howell in 1766; and Thomas Howell in 1774. It is noted that this family group came from Anson County, N.C. and settled near the mouth of Buck Creek. Also, Caleb Howell is included as a mill operator on Buck Creek. The Howells (Caleb, Philip, Daniel) are also listed under T17 entry. It's starting to run a little late in the evening, or I would keep reading through the historical section for mention of these surnames. I hope that this material is of some use to members of the list. 3. Hi Nancy, I stopped at the offices of the Sylvania Telephone a week or so back and they had two or three copies available for sale - on the sales shelf in their front office. The cost is $60 plus tax - making it $64.20 - purchased onsite. The version now available is a reprint of the 1989 version. I own a third printing from 1991. Alternatively, you can call Linda Hollingsworth Averett at 912-564-7075 and order the book directly from her. I believe that she charges $60 for the book and something like $6.00 in S&H. She was married to the late Dixon Hollingworth's and has since remarried. I spoke with Linda and she tells me that there are about fifty copies of the last printing remaining for sale. It is a lovely book. For myself there are pictures of two of my great-grandfathers (one with his first wife - my g-grandmother) and two of brothers for one of my grandfathers (and lots of cousins). The first portion of the book contains a general history of Screven Co. Lots of people are described in this section. Those very same folks often don't appear in the family entries. So, the historical section can be quite useful. The cover has a color plate of a train of the Sylvania Central railroad running on a stretch of track. Quite nice and attractive.
