    3. Hello All, I think that you mean James Usher (b. may 26, 1826) and his wife Jane C. Dugger Usher (b. November 2, 1825), who were married November 6, 1843. They were my gg-grandparents via their son William Thomas 'Tom' Usher and his first wife Josephine Helmy Usher. My grandparents of this line were John Carey Taylor and Emma Usher Taylor. Their daughter Evelyn Taylor married Carl Ernest Reddick. They were my late parents. Dale E. Reddick nanagram wrote: > Oop's! I forgot! 1. Re: [GASCREVE] Again the courseys
    2. Judy, I don't know if this will help you but if you can find where the oldest wills and estate papers are housed in Effingham County and can take the time to look up COURSEY you might find the father of your Coursey or Grandfather. Also, when I hit a brickwall with my line of Courseys I started with his wife. There appeared to be some controversy over who her father was. I found her father's estate papers and in those it showed where my William A. had been paid his wife share. At least it answered the question of who her father was and that William A. was indeed her husband.. You might have already tried this and if so then sorry for butting in. Nancy

    2. Maynard, Back in these days, it was quite common for a pregnant woman to return to her mother's and father's home to give birth, especially if they lived on the frontier, so to speak. Additionally, it is not very far from Jacksonboro, which was the county seat of Screven County prior to 1849, to the Barnwell, Allendale, or Hampton Districts of South Carolina, and there was fairly easy access to S. C. at Burton's Ferry (where the Hwy 301 bridge now is). This would not only account for Hester's being absent from the 1840 census, but William's birthplace being S. C. As far as some of the others missing from the 1830 census, the enumerators were not always accurate or did 100% of the people. Some people lived so far back in the woods that they couldn't be found, or were perhaps so mean that no one wanted to have anything to do with them. Remember how evil and rough the people were in Jacksonboro when Lorenzo Dow came through about 1821? Anyway, I hope that this helps. From my point of view, you're on the right track. Happy hunting! Scottie

    3. Hi tom, yes I printed out the recent Coursey info that was on screven list. Saved it for future reference. so far it appears that our Courseys do not connect. Believe me, I wish that they did. I have made two local phone calls to Coursey families still residing here. One was definately either of ours. The second recommended party was not home, so I will have to try again on that one. Ihe coursey that I am "chasing" onlu go back to 1880 here in Effingham county-so far. Emmett S. Coursey b. 1-254-1880 and died in April of 1951, here in same County. Until I can locate the name of his parents I am a little lost to connect him to amyone. His wife kate A Dixon has provided me with two contacts that more about that line than the Courseys. Emmett S. Coursey had two sons that I know of. Charles sylvester Coursey and Herman G. coursey. Neither of these sons lived long than the age of two years. Dot Simpson's info tells me that her material and mine have to cross here somewhere, as she even remembers her grandmother speak of the little towns that are here in the county. A wilson line and Dugger line also appear in her genealogy. We need Emmett's dad. Perhaps some of the locals can help us out here. I can't seem to find any Screven connection yet. There appears to be another distinct Coursey here, also. None of their names have surfaced in anyones material that has filtered through the Screven or Effingham research list. And they are buried in a little cemetery just outside of Springfield, in their own little space. Well, all we can do is keep phugging away at this! If i find out anything new I shall post it on both county lists. 1. Re: [GASCREVE] COURSEYS.....Again
    2. Jack and Bill, This appears to be early on in Screven Co., and I don't know if there is a connection for you.. This is part of John E. Ladson, Jr.'s work that was sent to me. "Pension application for JAMES COURSEY for service in the war of 1812. Screven Co, Georgia dated 1852 and age 60 years........Makes his declaration to receive bounty land....served in the militia under Capt. James Neel and Col Fe.(?).... He, states he was drafted in Warren County, Georgia in 1812 and was discharged in Burke County, Georgia.......Again dated Screven County 29th May 1855. he stated he enlisted 1st Nov 1814 and was discharged 5 March 1815................ 20 April 1878, Mrs. Elizabeth Coursey, widow of james Coursey, applies for a pension, her husband and states that James Coursey died 20th June 1876 at Swainsboro, Georgia and that he was first married to Margaret CHALSTON, and that he married Elizabeth Kersey at Sylvania, Georgia by Erasmus White, J.P. ann she gave her age as 31 yeears. Affadavits for Mrs. Elizabeth Coursey wre signed by William C. Coursey (Probably William Chalston Coursey) and by James A. Radford. The application seems to have been turned down. Nothing further. This James Coursey was born from his own statement in 1792, and he states in census report in Georgia. He married Margaret Chalston as his first wife and Elizabeth Kersey as his second wife. His family group is as follows:" 1. Wherry Coursey 2. Edmund Coursey 3. John Coursey 4. William C. Coursey 5. unreadable ( on 1850 census of Screven County a child named Absalom is also listed as 4 years...same as Jane).(Could that be the unreadable one?) ( A Note says he is buried in Effingham County at the Ebenezer Cemetery....don't know when he died.)...Judy you might want to check that out. 6. Jane Coursey 7. Elizabeth Coursey 8. James Coursey" I have typed this as it was written, mistakes and all..It appears to be a 4 page letter or notes typed and sent probably to Leonardo Andrea. (it doesn't say but was in the folder with files that were.) In this letter or notes it appears that he is trying to connect James Coursey as a son of William A. Coursey, first Sheriff of Screven County. Along with James he tried to connect Absolam, John and an Abraham Coursey. Don't know him at all. Periodically in this research he also tries to connect MY William A. Coursey of Tatnall County in 1827(married there in 1827) to William A. Coursey Sheriff . FYI-Latter Day Saints apparently has this work of Leonardo Andrea on film and I think you might be able to rent and view but am not sure. The original work is in Columbia, South Carolina which you probably know. I don't know if the SC file includes the research for Dr. Ladson.. If you think your William Colson Coursey connects to these Coursey please let me know and I will look through some more of what I have been able to get hold of.. What I have is kind of a budle of papers, notes, letters and such.. Not in any particular order. Hope this helps some of you.. Thanks, Nancy

    1. [GASCREVE] Hester Wilder Mock Poythress
    2. Since we have recently had a number of MOCK posters on the board I am wondering if anyone can flesh out this string with corrections, additions, etc. Specific attention is directed to Bob Peavy and Scottie who have some good background on this one. In the previous discussion of this lady the question was raised did she marry 2. Meredith POYTHRESS, Jr. or marry 2. Meredith POYTHRESS, Sr. It has been concluded with satisfactory evidence that she married 2. Meredith POYTHRESS, Sr. (Meredith POYTHRESS, Sr. had m 1. Edith CLEATON, Mecklenburg County, VA 14 July 1781.) Hester WILDER....b. 25 Jan 1793? (daughter of Harry WILDER?) m. 1 Benjamin T. MOCK, m. 1813, d. 1814 Child 1. James Andrew MOCK b. 1813 Child 2. Grandville B. MOCK b. 1815 ( possibly fathered by or adopted by Grandville BEVILLE, Sr., at any rate the young man's name was changed to Grandville BEVILLE by act of the Ga. Legislature in 1838) m. 2 Meredith POYTHRESS, Sr. 1817-18 (note: questionable here is the advanced age of Meredith, Sr. m. a 23 year old widow, even more questionable would be age at birth of last child). Child 3. George Washington POYTHRESS, b. 13 Jan 1819 Child 4. John White POYTHRESS b. 13 Jan 1821 Child 5. Henrietta POYTHRESS b. 1 Dec 1823 Child 6. Sarah Edwards POYTHRESS b. 14 Nov 1826 Child 7. Issac Edmond POYTHRESS b. 28 May 1828 Child 8. William ? (see conclusions below) (note: above births (except # 8) are attributed in a ledger book contemporaneously recorded by Issac WILDER, a brother of Hester WILDER MOCK POYTHRESS. While this document certainly has a ring of credibility, it must be stated that the location of the ledger book can no longer be verified.) 1830 Census, Screven, Pg. 306, 34th Mil. Dist. HH of Meridith PORTRESS (sic) Male Under 5 1 ? 5-10 1 John White POYTHRESS b. 13 Jan 1819 10-15 1 George Washington POYTHRESS, b. 13 Jan 1821 60-70 1 Meredith POYTHRESS, Sr. himself Female 20-30 1 Hester WILDER MOCK POYTHRESS [the above census record has some real problems: first the unidentified male under 5, missing are "females" Henrietta POYTHRESS (b. 7 Dec 1823) as "5-10" and Sarah Edwards POYTHRESS (b. 14 Nov 1826) as "under 5" and Hester WILDER MOCK POYTHRESS' age is understated as she would be "30-40". While the 1830 census is generally very unexact in the 34th Mil. Dist., this entry seems especially full of questions. However, I construe this as the entry for Meredith POYTHRESS Sr. and Hester WILDER MOCK as nothing else seems to fit. An entry for Meredith POYTHRESS, Jr. is missing entirely and we know that in 1830 he was married to Susan R. MANER, with one child Mary (female "under 5"). Further, we know that Meredith POYTHRESS, Jr. in the mid-1820's was participating in the estate settlement of John S. MANER, by right of his wife Susan R. MANER. It does not seem reasonable to believe that the census record first above was for anyone but Merideth POYTHRESS, Sr. and Hester WILDER MOCK] 1840 Census Meredith POYTHRESS, Sr. is no doubt by now deceased, leaving Hester and family unaccounted for in the 1840 census under a POYTHRESS "household" name, and perhaps they were not even in Georgia. Having not gone through the entire county census it is likely I have missed this one. However, Senior's son Meredith POYTHRESS, Jr. and wife Susan R. MANER are accounted for in the 1840 census and they plus their four children are all slotted exactly. 1850 Census Hester WILDER MOCK's first son James Andrew MOCK is accounted for in HH458. Hester's son John White POYTHRESS is accounted for in HH406, and son Issac Edmond POYTHRESS is in HH297. In HH298, now appears Hester POYTHRESS living next door to son (?) Issac as head of her own household: Hester POYTHRESS 55 F W Farmeress $800 SC William 18 M W Farmer SC Mary A. 14 F W Ga Lucy M. 9 F W Ga Jane 5 F W Ga Is this Hester POYTHRESS Hester WILDER MOCK POYTHRESS? I conclude yes. Was she born in SC? The MOCK family had relations in SC. How could William at age 18 be born to Hester in SC unless she went back to SC following the death of Meredith POYTHRESS, Sr. and had a child (William) "b. SC" and returned to Georgia. I also conclude that perhaps William and more likely the remaining 3 children in this household were children of Hester's children adopted (formally or informally) from one or more of Hester's other sons for whatever reasons. Why would they not have different surnames? Because their surnames were POYTHRESS acquired from their own father, not from Hester. And Hester may have been in SC at the time of the 1840 census accounting for that absence. Is this conclusion far fetched? The alternative is that this is an entirely different woman from Hester WILDER MOCK POYTHRESS. Living next door to HWMP's son? And born within 1 or 2 years of HWMP? And that she didn't even move to Georgia from SC until between the years of the child born in SC and the child born in Georgia (1832-1836)? Would be most appreciative for any and all corrections and/or additions. I am 500 miles from the Ga. Archives so its a spell between visits. Many thanks, Maynard Poythress

    2. Hi All, Would anyone happen to know the "naming practice" for the first born daughter? If my William A. Coursey was in fact married to Susan Jones who was daughter of Francis and Pollys Mills Jones shouldn't the first daughter be named after the mothers family.. William's oldest daughter that I know of was Nancy Coursey b. 1816. 2nd daughter was Winiford (Winifred). Thanks all, Nancy
