Hi Barb, I ran across some more information on the Hillis family name while I was researching some other material in the Georgia Room of the Screven County Library. There is an interesting book there entitled: "A Great Heritage - An Overview of Some of the Families of Burke, Emanuel, Jefferson, Screven, and Jenkins Counties, Georgia, and Abroad" Compiled by DAVID HILLIS - Girard, Georgia - First Edition, 1991. GR 975.86 HIL There are six pages of family history for the Hillis family. This is one of the longer sections. For the Oglesby family there four different histories. The first is a one page section; the second is also one page in length, as is the third, however - the fourth is three pages in length. There are 71 family histories provided across 116 pages. Most are short. The four different Oglesby histories are placed on six pages. The Hillis family is contained on six pages. The families of interest to myself are the Royal and Reddick families - the former occupied four pages, while the latter also covered four pages. Thus, these seven family histories account for twenty pages of the family histories section. The remaining 64 entries are spread across the remaining 96 pages. I hope that can find some more information on Hillis relations in this work of DAVID HILLIS. Dale
Hi Judy, Hi Nancy, I just needed to correct the name of a road that I provided to you last week. I had called the road in Effingham Co. which leads back to the Coursey Cemetary by the name of "Coursey Landing Road." I was wrong. I drove by today and looked at the roadsign again and saw that the name is actually "Coursey Cemetary Road." With there actually being a true Coursey Landing Road just a couple of miles to the North in Screven Co., I suppose that my mistake is understandable. Anyhow, that's the correction that needed to be made. Dale
Hi Jim, You might try the Microsoft mapping site and try to zoom into the location. I've used their service to look at my workplace and I could make out each building on the site. At another site the location of dock sticking out into a salt water creek was easily visible. If I recall correctly, Mr. Young said that there had been a large Oak left standing within the cemetary and it should be surrounded by planted pines. You can choose locales by prominent features, placenames, or longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates (If I recall how the service is presented, correctly). My Great Great Grandfather Andrew Jackson Byrd moved his family to Suwannee County Florida about 1855 from Sumter District SC. He was the son of Redden Byrd of Darlington District SC. This is not the Redden Byrd who lived in Dale county Al. The family connects back in NC about 1700. The only reason I know about Redden, is that some Byrd Researchers tried to mesh him my Redden d. 1858 in Darlington District S.C. Cindy:j Thanks for the info. However, I need dates in the mid-late 1700s or very early 1800s. Victoria
Hi all, now that vacation times are upon us, I thought to send out a reminder about email inboxes. If your email inbox maxes out and begins rejecting mail you may no longer be subscribed to many of your mailing lists. This administration program for this list drops people when it receives 8 rejects in a row. Deborah Byrd
Scottie, thanks for providing the background on the museum being located in the old orphanage. What i should have said was that the GnannFamily was quite instrumental in organizing the begannings of that famous museum. Let us give credit where credit is due. They did just a little more than just donate items. As well as many other descendants. It is neither "here nor there," I am just always so pleased when I visit there! Bob, thanks for the reminder of the Labor Day Festival. Since moving back to Effingham, two years ago I have not made this event. Perhaps this year I can. Can I look forward to see some of the other list members, there? Judy 2jv@bellsouth.net
Thanks for posting this. I had seen this before but, had forgotten about it! John Wolfe seems to have been quite a common name in the south. Does anyone have knowledge of which John Wolf/Wolfe this might have been? Interesting as i have a John S Wolfe, but his appearance was much later, and here in Effingham. Any ideas or comments on the John of Screven? Judy Rountree Mason 2jv@bellsouth.net
The Salzburger Museum was given to the Salzburger Society by Mr. John LeBey who was the son-in-law of Mrs. Pearl Rahn Gnann. It was given in memory of his wife who was Mrs. Gnann's daughter and in honor of Mrs. Gnann. The ladies' portraits hang in the museum along with a picture of Mrs. Amy Gnann LeBey (Mrs. Charles LeBey), another daughter of Mrs. Gnann. Miss Amy was the "backbone of the museum" until her death in recent years. I attended the dedication of the museum more than 25 years ago. Does anyone know of a satellite photo mapping program that will enable one to select an area by lat. and long. and zoom in closely enough to pick out ground features, specifically a wall around a cemetery in a wooded area? Jim
