    3. For you that are not aware of it, Sylvania has a Web site. It is http://sylvaniaga.com. It has a lot of helpful information including yellow and white pages. It is wonderful to have our town on line.

    2. Dear Dale, No wonder you have been able to be so helpful! Your summary, which indicates a great deal of hard work, is both impressive and fascinating. Thank's so much for taking the time to share these things with me. Perhaps, I should take a turn at this. I was born in Chamblee, GA, lived at Millhaven until age five, grew up in Statesboro, and graduated from Georgia Southern with a BA in Fine Arts and a minor in Music in 1973. My husband, Roeder (who is from Buffalo, NY) and I, now live in N.E. Ohio and have four children. Most of my father's (Carroll Franklin Farr, Jr.) family and relatives, whom I remember- such as Farrs, Hendersons, Overstreets, Evanses, Hollingsworths and Hunters had lived in Screven County for many years,( the Youngs, Greenes, Camerons, Browns, McCalls and Jarrells, etc. did also, but I don't remember any of them personally). My grandmother Mary Leona Farr was a Clark from Flemming, GA. My granddaddy Farr was the grandson of Capt. W. Michael Henderson and Cynthia Ann Brown Henderson. He met grandmother in Savannah and my father was born there. We also had relatives in Augusta. My mother, Jean Elizabeth, was a Stewart from Indiana. She and my dad met after WWII at Indiana University. Her parents (Ray and Sophia Stewart) later moved down south after he retired from the railroad and lived in Sylvania for a time before moving to Statesboro. My sister,Carole has been doing much of the Screven County research ( and "colaborating" with me). Even I can recall some of the old folks and places around the Cooperville area. But many of them are gone, of course, and it is hard to find people who remember farther back. (When he inquired at the door on Sunday, Jim Blease was sadly informed that the man who had described the Cameron cemetary to him, Mr.Young, had recently passed away.) It's too bad that we didn't start earnestly researching even ten years earlier. Grandmother Farr, who passed away at age 97 in 1997, remembered so much firsthand, as well as the information she had been told about the Hendersons, and all the other cousins around Screven County. I guess we'll just have to keep asking the right questions and looking in the right places. Wish I had more time. Anyway, it is fun - sometimes frustrating - but mainly fun, and most interesting to meet people like yourself, online. Are you searching now for anyone in particular - sounds like you might have lots to go on since your folks are from Screven County, and many of your relatives are close by? Once again, I am glad that I asked who you were. Thank's. Cyndi Kinkel

    2. Would anyone on the list have the phone number the the Screven County Courthouse? I am still trying to find where wills and estate papers prior to 1850 might be housed. Thanks Nancy

    3. Dear Cyndi, I grew up in rural Richmond County. My parents were both from Screven Co. and moved to Richmond Co. due to my late father's teaching job with the U.S. Army's Signal School at Fort Gordon. My father was Carl Ernest Reddick and my mother was Evelyn Taylor Reddick. I am related to all of the Reddicks and all of the Flythes in and about Screven Co., sometimes multiply so (the Flythes and Reddicks have intermarried several times). I am related to most of the Taylors and all of the Ushers in Screven and adjacent Effingham county. As to my professional training, I have a B.A. degree in Psychology and Sociology from Augusta College. I then received an award of the M.Sc. degree from Augusta College (now, Augusta State University) in Experimental Biopsychology. I then attended the University of Georgia and studied Comparative Psychology and Primatology in further graduate studies. I failed to complete my studies due to a combination of a bit of 'burnout' and exposure to a intestinal parasite named Blastocystis hominis (this is an organism that you want to avoid - it results in internal bleeding [and, if untreated - often, death]. I then worked at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center of Emory University for over eight years - involved in drug and ophthalmic research involving non-human primates and other animal models for research into human health problems. Since leaving my employment at Emory Univ., I have worked for one of the world's largest breeders of monkeys. My place of employment lies only about 45 miles from Sylvania. So I am a local (sort of) who has access to various local resources. I am also computer literate - so, I can work my way around most computer matters ( I know how to keep Trash-80, C-64, Amiga, PowerMac, and most PC systems working...). Well, that's who I am... 3. Hi Cheryl, Go to http://www.microsoft.com and run a search on the term 'terraserver.' That should point you to the service that Microsoft offers (I have it in my bookmarks on my work computer, but I avoid most connections with Microsoft on my home computer). A warning - the Terraserver mapping service is really a hit and miss proposition. They'll offer whole swaths of an area and then skip several miles... It can be a really frustrating experience. An alternative would be to do as I suggested to Jim Blease or to look at the offering in the posting two entries prior to your posting to GASCREVE (www.topozone.com). All sorts of companies and government agencies offer mapping services. Start with one or two such services and branch out to other services. If you have a fairly new computer with a Pentium or better CPU of 120 MHz or greater speed then DeLorme offers a mapping program with USGS data that can be displayed in 3-Dimensional format. That might prove useful in the higher, 'Sand Hills' locales in portions of Screven, Bulloch, Jenkins, Burke and adjacent counties or at the very steep bluffs that front the Savannah River flood plain (you can compare the layout of the computer-generated 3-D map with the actual lay of the land when looking for particular sites perhaps hidden among the woods of an irregular topography). Go to www.delorme.com and have a look at their CD-ROM or DVD-ROM offerings. Also, they have great mapbooks for each state. Be sure to look at the USGS site. Start at www.usgs.gov and look at their map offerings. Go to: http://mapping.usgs.gov/mac/isb/pubs/booklets/usgsmaps/usgsmaps.html ...to read about all of the different types of maps offered by the USGS. This includes satellite and photoimage maps where they are available. I hope that this information has been helpful. 1. [GASCREVE] National Genealogical Society Quarterly
    2. Hello list, I decided to see if I could find this publication since I am struggling with the early lines of my family. I did locate it in the Charlotte, NC Genealogy library in the Main Library Downtown. I also looked in the library in Augusta, Georgia, but they do not have this series of publications. I made a copy of some of the pages, but have had no time to review anything in detail. Some of it is indexed, but not all. Hope this helps some of you that may be looking. Cheryl Flowers

    2. Dear Dale, I read your post to Jim Blease. Wanted to tell you how much we appreciate your help. (I asked SmithBanks if he could tell me who you were, as I unfortunately do not know who anybody down there any more these days). Thank's again for the maps and the words of encouragement. Carole, Frank and Jim went over on Sunday to check out the site, but it was hard to tell what was what. We will keep looking, and maybe the Microsoft maping is what we need. I'll be home the first part of August and will also try to get over there. Carole had success at Sylvania Library yesterday and made copies of some records we have been long searching for, thanks to Pat Lord. It is very difficult to do this search long distance. And Carole has worked hard. I'm thankful that we are finally getting what we need. Please, stay in touch. Cyndi Kinkel

    1. [GASCREVE] Museum
    2. Hi All, I would like to apologize for the misinformation I put out about the Museum at Ebenezer a couple of days ago. The museum was indeed built by Mr. LeBey for his wife who was a Gnann, I believe in 1957. It is, however, built on the site of the old orphanage, and this is what threw me off. (You have to admit that the museum building looks older than 43!). Once again my apologies, and I want to thank everyone in the discussion group for the good research and hard work that you all do. May God bless all of you. Happy hunting! Scottie
