    2. Dale E Reddick
    3. Hi Barb, I just went back to the site with the 1895 map of Screven Co. and had a look at Burke, Effingham, and adjacent portions of other counties. That whole map has so many errors that I just don't think that it can be trusted for determining the position of any little settlement. In Effingham it has Rincon far out of position relative to Springfield. It also shows Ebenezer Creek connecting with the Little Ogeechee River and running into both the Ogeechee River and the Savannah River. In Jefferson Co. (shown on the Burke Co. map page) it has the town of Stapleton located in two different locales!! There are other communities that appear to be far out of place. I think that it would be very problematic for anyone to base a search for modern remains of 19th century communities based on that map. Dale

    3. Hi Robin, While Sheriff Coursey is mentioned, there is no mention of a Sheriff Elkins. There is a single reference to the surname ELKINS in the family entry F140 (on page 156) for the family of Thomas Freeman (Nov. 19, 1849 - May 10, 1934) and his wife Mary Elizabeth Newton (April 28, 1847 - Nov. 27, 1912). They were married on Jan. 1, 1874. In that entry there is the following description for the fifth offpring of that family: Vivian A. Freeman, born July 6, 1881, married Jimmie Elkins, daughter Elkins, daughter of James E. Elkins. No issue. That's the only Elkins reference included in the index. 2. I've never been able to pin down the parents of Mary Ann Wilson of Screven County, born 7 Nov 1829 and dead 15 Apr 1898, buried in the Douglas Branch Baptist Church cemetary. She married William C. Dickson/Dixon on 8 Feb 1849. They were married by a Rev. William Moore, who when on to found this church, of which Willam and Mary Ann were charter members. William was the son of James Caswell Dickson and Lucinda Moore. They lived in the Rocky Ford area of Screven County. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thor Egede-Nissen

    1. [GASCREVE] Nancy Mills and Martin Mills Herrington
    2. Hi All, I just wanted to let everyone know that I've recently been shown the graves of Nancy Mills and Martin M. Herrington (they are in Burke County, not far from Sardis). Nancy was born in 1792 and was the daughter of Archibald Mills and granddaughter of Lieutenant Anthony Bonnell, Sr. Martin was the son of Richard Marion Herrington and his second wife. Almost all of the Herringtons from around the Sardis and Perkins areas are direct descendants of Nancy and Martin. I took some pictures of the graves and they are quite legible; however, my scanner is not working properly. However, I would be glad to "snail mail" a picture to anyone who is interested. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the Discussion Group for the good work that they are doing. I have visited other county sites, and their efforts are paltry at best, Keep up the good work! Scottie Scott

    3. Hi Nancy, Just a quick look at the "Screven County History" shows that William History was elected to the office of Sheriff on January 20, 1794. In the same section of T17 he is mentioned as one of those citizens participating in the 'cause of the new county.' Other than his marriage to Susan A. Jones, that is the only mention of him in the the 'SCH." 2. Dale E Reddick
    3. Hi Jill, This does seem a bit of a longshot. Caroline M. Anderson 'CANEDY' was born in 1822 and presumably gave birth to Jane Elizabeth in 1841. How does this fit in with the dates for your JASPER NEWTON CANTY and CAROLINE CANTY? I am forwarding to Bob Peavy, since he had the original information regarding Caroline M. Anderson and her marriage to a 'CANEDY.' 2. Hi: This is my grandfather on my father's side. He married Annie Liza Bragg around 1900. I have heard that they may have been distant cousins; however, I cannot find any information on him. He died Dec. 7, 1941. Fortunately I have complete information on Annie's family history. She was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Bragg and Rosa Lovett Bragg. Bruno and Annie had 5 children, one of whom was my dad - Whatley Battey Bragg. Can you help? Thanks! Faye FARHolsten @aol.com

    1. Re: [GASCREVE] Canedy's
    2. Dale E Reddick
    3. Hi Claudia, That's the question. Short and sweet - oral history via my late father led me to understand that my great-grandmother Janie Jackson Flythe had been born a 'Kennedy.' This 'Kennedy had supposedly married an Anderson woman. As a part of this oral history - their daughter, Jane Elizabeth born in 1841 was later raised by her Anderson grandparents. However, when Bob Peavy looked into the Anderson connections and found material that indicates that a Caroline M. Anderson married a Canedy... There is a younger son of this couple with a clearly recorded name and age at the 1850 and 1860 censuses. But, a 1850 census showed a nine year old Jane living as a Farmer in a related household (one Anderson family / household [Bob, please step in and correct this if I've gotten this wrong] had its name changed to 'Farmer' with an act of the Georgia Legislature). Later, a 21-year old Jane 'Anderson' did marry a 16 or 17-year old John Jackson in 1862. They has one child and John Jackson died in Atlanta during the Civil War. Later, Janie Jackson married my great-grandfather George Washington Flythe, ancestor of all of the Flythes in Screven Co. The particular identity of the Canedy husband to Caroline M. Anderson is a mystery to me, so far. Do you have any notions about an identity for this individual? 1. Re: [GASCREVE] Canedy's
    2. Dale, Probably too far off. I'm not sure of CAROLINE's date of birth, but JASPER NEWTON CANTY was born in 1851. I figured it was a long shot, but I thought it would be easy for the two names to get confused. Thanks though! Jill

    2. Let me check all of my records. The problem is most of our Cannady's were in Emanuel County in 1841. I'll putting your letter in my files and making note to watch for this Jane (Kennedy-Canedy) "Anderson". claudia
