Hello All Thought I would try again. Can you help with the JOYNER BOLTON BRINSON CEMETERY? I have a page, which I do not know how I came by it. the address is take Millen Highway to cross roads 2 miles from Bay Branch. Trun left and go up hill. Turn to right, take a dirt road to curve on left. There will be some barns on left which mark the old Brinson home site. Leave car and walk around a fence that is perpendicular to road. You will see a few tall weeds that mark the site of this cemetery very near. This fence divides Edward Brinson's land from his cousin, Mrs Lexie Brinson Brown. The cemetery is on Mrs. Brown's land. Mrs Lexie Brown said that when she was a child a school house and the first Bay Branch Church were near the Cemetery and oak tree.
Hi Barbara. I feel the same kind of exasperation sometimes being so far away from all the possible records. I'm in Fort Worth, TX, and it seems everything else is in GA! I looked in another book, a little different take on the same done by the GHS. These were the listings for Daniel Goffe: Died. On Tuesday morning between five and six o'clock, the coroner's Inquest sat n the body of Mr. DANIEL GOFFE, son of Mrs. JANE GOFFE, of this town [Savannah], found dead near Major Fishbourn's about half an hour after one, when by the verdict of the jury it appeared MR. GOFFE came to his death from the discharge of a musket out of a window of PLATT'S tavern. The jury charge one JOHN BRICE, alias RICHARDS, a carpenter from Charleston, WILLIAM ALLEN, Platt and his wife, all now in confinement, with being principals and accessories in murdering the deceased. His remains were in the evening attended to the Burying-Ground by a respectable number of citizens. Thursday, July 7, 1785, NOTICES, Georgia Gazette. SAVANNAH NEWS Last night, between eight and nine o'clock, as the under gaoler opened the prison door, he was, together with another man, knocked down with iron bolts by JOHN BRICE, alias Richards, committed for the murder of MR. DANIEL GOFFE, and one HINSON, a horse thief, who had got off their irons, and notwithstanding Mr. LONG, the gaoler and another person were near the door, they made their escape over the fence. Thursday, July 28, 1785, Georgia Gazette SAVANNAH NEWS At the trial of WILLIAM PLATT, MARY PLATT, his wife, and JOHN BRICE, alias RICHARDS, for the murder of Mr. DANIEL GOFFE, all the prisoners were found guilty. The jury recommended MARY PLATT to the mercy of the Court. It appeared in the course of the trial that Platt had borne a grudge to two gentlemen, who he supposed to be, and one of whom actually was, in company with Mr. GOFFE. The musket was fired by BRICE, but he was furnished with it by the people of the house, and at their instigation committed the above cruel murder. Charleston, August 18. Died, a few days since, MR. JOHN POWER, of Waterford. This young man lately arrived here from Ireland, with his father, a man now in his 75th year, in full expectation of being put in possession of an estate, willed them conditionally; but they were not informed (previous to their leaving home) of the opinion prevalent in this country that "it is far better to be an executor than heir at law". It is a melancholy reflection, that this aged father must either shortly end, or drag on a miserable existence, pennyless and friendless, pending "the glorious uncertainty of the law". Hi Barbara. This is what I found: "On Tuesday morning between 5 and 6 o'clock the Coroners Inquest sat on the body of MR. DANIEL GOFFE (son of Mrs. Jane Goffe of this town), found dead near Major Fishbournes. Three persons have been charged with discharging a musket out a window of PLATT'S tavern. A respectable number of citizens attended him to the burying ground. (Gazette of the State of Georgia, 7/7/1785, 3:1)" That is all that is contained here. The next step would be to contact, or better yet, visit the Georgia Historical Society in Savannah. On microfilm there, they have all the old newspapers. "GSG" stands for 'Gazette of the State of GA', the newspaper. 7/7/1785 stands for the day of the issue from which was abstracted this piece. 3:1 stands for the column on the page, paragraph #1. On the original that I sent, there are many other references to articles. Apply the same formula to those numbers to the dates of issue, column and paragraph number, and you will have 'the rest of the story', not an abstraction. Does that make sense? If not, let me know and I'll try something else <big grin!> Carole ----- Original Message ----- From: <Sassy0236@aol.com> To: <gdrexel1@airmail.net> Sent: Monday, October 02, 2000 2:46 AM Subject: Early Deaths in Savannah GA > Hi Carole, > > Regarding the info you posted that was dated November 3 (William Platt found > guilty of murdering Daniel Goff).
