The Ellaville Sun Friday, Dec. 23, 1938 No. 25 SCHLEY SLANTS by Raymond Duncan The opening paragraphs of today's column should not be called "personal journalism." They are only a few lines to my friends, many of whom I shall not see before the holidays. I want to wish each of my subscribers--and their friends who borrow the paper--a satisfying Christmas. And I am sending along a greeting to express this wish: THE CHRISTMAS STORY. I am calling attention to this feature because I sincerely want each reader to regard it as a personal greeting card from me. It was planned in October, written and edited in November and printed two weeks ago. Published on book paper, it contains no advertisements and was intended to present a balanced coverage of the season. I make only one comment: nowhere in my newspaper experience have I found anything so fascinating as working on the modern news story adaptation of the birth of Christ. Although representatives of the paper have had only two weeks to show it to the public, several thousand copies already have b! een bought, many being mailed to distant points, including virtually every state in the union. Copies will be mailed anywhere in an attractive holiday wrapper for 12 cents, the name of the sender being written in the space below "Season's Greetings", where my signature appears on member's copies. (Transcriber's note: I regret that apparently the supplement mentioned above was not filmed with the rest of the paper. Perhaps it was kept as a souvenir and not sent to the film lab with the rest of the paper.) HE'S AN HONEST BOY, AND COULDN'T DENY IT-- Charlie Wall, Jr., who sells advertising for The Sun, had one he couldn't answer this week. When a prospect replied to some angle of his sales talk by saying, "You're full of prunes", Charlie couldn't deny it. For he's on a diet of prunes. BUS DRIVERS SURPRISE SUPERINTENDENT-- The eight bus drivers of the Schley county school system pulled their annual surprise on County School Superintendent J.L. Duncan last week by presenting him an attractive Christmas package containing a shirt with tie and socks to match. He asks this column to express his appreciation. HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALLERS AWAITING SANTA-- Here is a letter which is self explanatory: Dear Santa: We are a group of young, little boys who play basketball for S.C.H.S. We have been real good this season winning six games and losing only two. Won't you please bring us two good guards, a center, and two good forwards. Don't forget our coach, Mr. Hatcher, and our little substitutes. Lots of love from. S.C.H.S. Boys' Basketball Team THEY WILL ONLY GET GREETINGS-- Birthday greetings today go out to those unfortunates who get just that--greetings. For their anniversaries fall too near Christmas for remembrances other than words to be given. Christmas Eve is a birthday for Mrs. John Wall, Mrs. Charles Wall and Mr. Arthur Cook. And Christmas Day marks anniversaries for Mrs. C.S. Wall and Bob Hill. Other Anniversaries include: Archer Avary, Jr., Dec. 18; Mary Burnam Williamson, Dec. 20; Elmo Pilcher, Dec. 21; Mrs. S.M. Etheridge, Mrs. T.J. Cook, Mrs. J.R. Bridges, Dec. 21; Elmo Pilcher, Dec. 22 (not a transcription typo); Charles Wall, Jr., Dec. 28. Mr. and Mrs. William B. Jordan celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary Thursday, Dec. 22. IRA WANTED ALL HIS FRIENDS TO HAVE ONE-- Ira T. Jones of Americus, former Ellaville boy, who drew the cover design for the Christmas supplement, halted the writer as he entered the Rylander Theatre, where Ira is an usher, the other night. "How about sending me two papers tomorrow," requested Ira, "I want to send all my friends one." CONGRATULATIONS TO PAUL AND "BUDDY"-- Congratulations to both Paul Tondee and "Buddy" Battle on their business changes, announced in today's paper. Both of them give efficiency and popularity to jobs that demand efficiency and popularity. PAUL TONDEE JOINS BUSINESS WITH HIS FATHER JANUARY 1 Charles Battle Will Succeed Tondee As Assistant Postmaster Paul Tondee has resigned as assistant postmaster here, effective December 31, to enter business with his father, W.T. Tondee, local merchant, Postmaster James H. Hart told The Sun Thursday. Hart announced he had appointed Charles (Buddy) Battle, well-known Ellaville young man, to succeed Tondee. A graduate of Ellaville high school in 1933, Tondee entered the post office more than three years ago and has been a popular official. He said he would announce further plans regarding his business connection next week. The son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Battle, the newly-named postal assistant was graduated from Ellaville high school in 1932 and Georgia Southwestern college, Americus, in 1934. Since that time he has represented an insurance company and has been employed at the M and M Store, his present connection. MILES RESIGNS SCHOOL BOARD POSITION S.W. Miles has resigned as secretary and treasurer of the Ellaville school board at the insistence of his physician who advised that he discontinue some of his offices of public service for the sake of his health. Miles, who has served as secretary and treasurer of the local board for the past five years, recently was elected mayor for 1939. He also is clerk of the Baptist church. S.A.
