TOM HARVEY. The news of the sudden death of Mrs. T.W. Harvey of Buena Vista was a great schock to her many Ellaville friends. She was in her usual health when she retired Saturday night, but her niece Miss Weaver, who occupied the same room, was alarmed about midnight by her heavy breathing. Other members of the family were hastily summoned, but when they reached the bedside she was dead. For months she has been in poor health, and death is supposed to have resulted from heart disease. Meadows, which occurred at her home Sunday night. Although for months she has been severely afflicted, yet her death was sudden and came as a shock to her many friends. Mrs.Meadows was in her 65th year, and had spent the greater part of her married life in this county, and no one could boast of more sincere friends than this kind devoted woman; who seemed to see only the good in those with whom she came into contact. In the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends, Rev. Henry Scarborough performed the last sad rites and we left her sleeping under a mass of fragrant blossoms, the offering of loving hearts. Arrington on Tuesday morning Aug. 15th. With tender care the fond parents and sympathizing friends watched by the little sufferer through long weeks as its life clung by a slender thread, just when hope had entered the mother's heart that her darling would be spared, the silent reaper gathered the little flower that had so entwined itself about their hearts. The tearful why? of the breaved ones can only be answered in that glad morning when all things shall be revealed then: At the crystal river's brink We shall fi-d each broken link Some sweet day by and by. Dr. Griffin conducted the funeral service at the grave in a very impressive manner. Every heart in Ellaville feels the tenderest sympathy for those in the shadow of this affliction. God's ways are always right and love is o'er them all; yet when every fiber of the heart is quivering with anguish unspeakable, it is hard to bow beneath the chastening rod. Time alone can bring that resignation that makes us feel that "He doeth all things well." A short but touching service conducted by Rev M.A. Phillips at the grave, and the little coffin covered with sweet flowers was shut out from sight, but if the sorely breaved ones will only follow the "Beckening Hands" of their pure and sinless child out beyond the midst and shadows that surround us here, they will find a land where there are no heartaches, no pain, no farewell tear. Mrs. J.M. Thornton. Though this sad event has been long and confidently expected, it was a great shock to our community. By her most examplary christian walk through life. her many willing sacrifices for the Redeemer's sake, her gentle, loving disposition and various other excellent traits of character she had won hosts of friends, far and near, who mourn her loss. For many months pryor (prior) to her death, Mrs. Thornton was prostrated by one of the most cruel of the grim destroyer's weapons--dropsy. But all through the long days and nights her agonizing sufferings were borne with a true christian fortitude that finds solace in resignation to the will of Him who giveth life and taketh life away, and when the end was near she expressed her willingness to answer the call. A true christian woman, a devoted wife, a gentle loving mother and a benevolent, kind hearted friend has gone to her reward in that upper and better kingdom. The funeral services Tuesday evening at the Baptist church, conducted by Dr. Griffin, were paticularly sad. Touched by the loss of one of the most sanguine and earnest workers in the church, the good man talked with earnestness and pathoes that brought tears to the eyes of many listeners. From the church the remains were taken to the cemetery and consigned to mother earth. 1. Schley County News # 17
    2. The Schley County News Friday, April 29, 1910 No. 17 WATER WORKS SOON It is beginning to look like business, we mean sure enough business. Marshall Holloway has a force of hands all this week at work on the ditches in which the water mains will be laid, thus giving to the greater portion of our citizens a complete system of water works. Just at present the system will not be extended to every section of the town, due to the fact that there is not sufficient funds in the city treasury to complete the work. Though it is the intention of the authorities to carry the work to final completion as soon as the necessary funds can be raised. Let those who are so unfortunate as (to) not receive the benefits of the water just at this time, bear patiently the seeming discrimination, as they have every assurance of the council that their needs will be supplied in the very near future. The contract for laying the mains was awarded to Mr. A.S. Baugh. MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVED While thousands of old Veterans were gathered at Mobile on last Tuesday in attendance upon the confederate reunion held at that place during this week, the various chapters Daughters of the Confederacy held fitting memorial exercises throughout our state. The program which had been previously arranged by the members of the Sarah E. Hornady chapter of this place was rendered in a most impressive manner at the Crisp Auditorium in the afternoon of Tuesday. Rev. R.E. Bailey delivered the memorial address, which was classic, eloquent and full of patriotism to the "lost cause." SCHLEY BOYS ARE HONORED The friends of Mr. Geo. W. Dykes, Jr., will learn with pleasure of his recent promotion and success. Mr. Dykes has been elected to the vice presidency of a newly organized oil refining company with headquarters in Atlanta. Mr. Marion Harper, also a Schley county boy, is to be the president. The corporate stockholders are men of wealth and actual experience in the oil business. The company will operate on a very large scale, thus rendering the duties of Mr. Dykes, one of many responsibilities, with a handsome salary attached. We are just in receipt of a circular letter from the city of Atlanta, issued to the plumbing trade of Georgia and other territory. It was very gratifying indeed to note that Carl A. Murphey, one of Ellaville's boys was named as president of this establishment. While in Atlanta a few days ago, we called upon our friend Mr. Murphy, at his quarters and found with pleasure that he was more than comfortably situated. This last promotion of presidency has come since our visit to him. We wish him all success. THINGS HAPPENED THIS WEEK Edited by Will V. Jones Mr. D.A. Peacock left for Dawson Thursday. A goodly sized crowd of Ellaville people enjoyed the picnic at Knowlton's Mill last Saturday. Mr. Chas Wall of Oglethorpe, spent Saturday and Sunday here, the guest of relatives. Mr. Charlie Stewart, who has been conducting a school down below Americus, has returned home. Mr. Will Rigsby, of Columbus, has accepted a position in the barber shop of Mr. Hale, our efficient barber. Hon. and Mrs. W.D. Murray, after a pleasant stay in Florida, returned home last week. Mrs. F.D. Cheney made a business trip down to Americus Monday. Mr. Watts Etheridge, of Americus, spent Sunday at his home near Concord. Miss Annie Mae Stewart, after successfully conducting a music class at Glenn Holly, has returned home for the summer. Miss Irene Wall, of Wall's Crossing was the charming guest of Miss Irene Murray Sunday. Mr. Dupont Murphey, of Atlanta, was the guest of relatives here this week-end. Miss Annie Mae Stewart, after successfully conducting a music class at Glenn Holly, has returned home for the summer. The friends of Mr. T.V. Bridges are glad to see him out again after a rather severe illness. Miss Mattie Pearl Benson, of Buena Vista, is the charming guest of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Baugh this week. Mrs. T.J. Baisden, from Americus, was with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Murphey the past week. Mrs. C.H. Smith, Mrs. C.R. McCrory and daughter, Miss Anna Bell McCrory went down to Americus yesterday. Mr. R(obert) H(ill) Strange is the guest of relatives in Ty Ty this week. Mrs. H.S. Lindsay and daughter, Miss Lucile Lindsay, were shopping in Americus Friday. Miss Imogene Sears came up from Americus this week to be with parents. Messrs. W.D. Sears and Robert Strange represented the local order K. of P's at the convention held in Lumpkin this week. We are glad to note that Mr. C.T. Rainey, after an illness of eight weeks, is again able to be out and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Judge and Mrs. J.C. Rainey have been the guest of relatives in Waverly Hall this week. Miss Irene Murray was the guest of Miss Irene Wall, at Wall's Crossing the past week. We learn with regret that Uncle Harrison Holloway of County Line, is quite sick. He is now one of the oldest citizens of our county, and has made a record for himself that any man should be proud of. The old Confederate Veterans who attended the reunion at Mobile this week were: Messrs. Brad Teel, A. Allen, P.Z. Hill, A.M. Caskey and William Banks. All were reported as having a most pleasant time. Invitations are out announcing the marriage of Miss Anna Bell McCrory to Rev. Idus Eugene McKellar, the marriage to take place May 18th at 8 o'clock at the Methodist church here. A reception from 9 to 11 o'clock will follow. On last Friday afternoon at her bungalow home on College St., Mrs. J.H. Cheney (Grace Peacock) very delightfully entertained the "42" club. This portrait turned up in mid-Canada about a year ago and a relative of the owner wrote me about who these folks were. It seems her daughter was given this portrait as a gift. Jasper Newton and Miranda Woodall left Schley County about 1881-3 as many others did headed for a new frontier where land was plentiful, rich and cheap and the opportunities were great. This portrait was no doubt made in their later years in Kissimmee, FL about 1905 (?). Their names are written on the back of the portrait and the artist is identified as Sue Cooper. I would love to hear from anyone who might be able to make the connection between the Woodalls and Sue Cooper. I have sure spent a lot of time trying. 1. Civil War Santa Claus

    3. Hi List, My family recently visited the Port Columbus Naval Museum in Columbus, Ga. The collections and displays are quite impressive and it's a interesing and fun place to visit (www.portcolumbus.org). That particular weekend they had a Victorian Holiday Open House and a Civil War era Santa Claus. He was the best Santa Claus I've ever seen! Below is an article that appeared in a local paper about this event and Santa Claus from the 1860s. In case you're interested in learning more about how our ancestors celebrated Christmas, I've found a fun webpage to visit: http://www.victoriana.com Click on Victorian Christmas in the right top corner of the page. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas! Carla Miles Marion County Coordinator, Ga. Gen Web Columbus Community News Civil War Santa Claus By Kim Lewis Page 25 Civil War Santa Claus greeted children and families recently at the Victorian Holiday Open House held at the Port Columbus National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus. This was the fourth year that Kevin Rawlings, a Civil War-era historian from Maryland has made the yuletide trip to Columbus. Rawlings appeared in the authentic patriotic design of red and white striped pants and a blue coat with large white stars. The costume is based on the 1862 illustration drawn by Thomas Nast of Harper’s Weekly. The special occasion intrigued us at the Columbus Community News as to what Christmas may have been like during the Civil War era. So we did some research. A Christmas tree during the 1860s might include simple decorations like dried and sugared nuts and fruits, popcorn balls, and string. Colored paper, wax ribbon, spun glass and silver foil ornaments were also popular. The trees were often placed on a table and gifts were left unwrapped. Although war had emerged by Christmas of 1861, soldiers were still in good spirits and pretty well equipped with food and supplies. Families sent Christmas boxes filled with special treats. Camp scenes included small evergreens decorated with hard tack and pork, carols being sung, eggnog consumed, and friendly competitions and games. By 1862 the full impact of the war began to sink in with the battle at Shiloh, Mass., and Antietam, as well as the movements in the Peninsula and Shenandoah Valley. It was at this time that Nast first created the image of Santa Claus with a rendition based on German folk tradition of an elderly kind and gentle man. In an effort to help with morale, the illustration showed Santa visiting the soldiers. Although Nast was a loyal Unionist, it was he who declared Santa’ s home address as the North Pole so that no nation could claim Santa as its own. Christmas of 1863 brought the battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Cautious Southern parents prepared children that Santa may not “make it through the blockade” to deliver presents. Boxes were again sent to those serving and contained food, clothing and small comforts from home. Several Christmas carols specifically mention the Civil War, but the most famous is, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” which began as a poem written in 1863 by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The final wartime Christmas during this period was in 1864. That was the year that Abraham Lincoln was presented the unusual holiday gift – the city of Savannah, Ga. – via telegram by General William T. Sherman. The long war left many Americans struggling for such a lengthy time that by now they were completely destitute. Supplies for most were depleted, allowing very few Christmas boxes to be sent to the soldiers. President Lincoln’s assassination stunned the nation, but the capture and conviction of the conspirators by midsummer brought restitution. The war came to an end and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution became law on Dec. 18, 1865, abolishing the institution of slavery. Families kept apart for years reunited and embraced again the Victorian holiday customs associated with Christmas. Newspapers that had previously filled the pages with subjects of war were now illustrating domestic and wintry scenes.
