He was 98 years of age and had been a member of County Line church for 80 years. Death was kept waiting till the full measure of his life was meted out, then the long standing grain bowed at the feet of the grim reaper, and the weary, trusting, soul found home and rest at last. Through all the decades of this century, Mr. Kent lived in Georgia except a short while spent in South Carolina. He was a man of strict integrity, and honored by all who were privileged to know him. He leaves a large family of children and grand children to revere his memory. In the presence of a large gathering of friends and neighbors he was laid to rest in the Thornton burial ground Sunday at 12 o'clock. Rev. W.W. Tidwell performing the last sad rites in a solemn and impressive manner. After a long life of usefulness he sleeps ! well, in blessed hope of the resurrection. The contracting parties were Mr. Edward Stewart and Miss Minnie Lee Threlkeld and so well had they kept their secret that no one knew of their intentions until just a few moments before the ceremony was performed. Mr. Stewart called in the afternoon at the home of his sweetheart and together they went for a walk, going to the home of Mrs. Kleckly, who is aunt of the groom. Two or three friends were notified and Ordinary Taylor summoned. By this time the affair had leaked out and a number of gentlemen dropped in just in time to witness the interesting event. Judge Taylor officiated in a very dignified and impressive manner. It was not exactly a runaway marriage, but as there was some opposition the young couple decided upon this course. But the bride and groom are very deserving and popular young people, and they begin life with the hearty good wishes of hosts of good friends. With these the News joins most sincerely, and trusts that their united lives may be one long dream of bliss. R.C. WELLS Mrs. Sallie Dodson Wells after a brief illness from an acute attack of pneumonia, passed into the "unknown and eternal" at twelve o'clock Friday night. The announcement of her death was a great shock to every one, and to her family when the blow came with heart-rendering suddenness. No one realized that her illness was of a serious nature. Friday morning she suffered considerable pain but insisted that she did not need a physician and would soon be up. Her anxious husband however summoned Dr. Cheney, but the skilled eyes of the physician saw at once that his patient was beyond all human aid. But hoping almost against hope everything possible was done to bring about a reaction, but the insidious disease had done its work and she sank rapidly. It is hard to associate Mrs. Wells with death. Her sunny nature, bright and joyous at all times, makes her loss all the more keenly felt in the home where she was indeed the light. Her ministry of love to husband and children in ! its watchful tenderness was beautiful. Mrs. Wells had been a resident of Ellaville only three years, but in the short period she had gathered about her many warm friends. She was a useful member of the Baptist church and will be greatly missed in the sanctuary. The remains were interred in our cemetery Sunday afternoon. A large gathering of friends stood about the open grave as the funeral service was impressively read by Judge C.L. Battle, and in a few appropriate remarks he bore testimony to the genuine good works of the departed. Nothing in life is so sad as the taking away of a young wife and mother, and the bereaved husband and children have the universal sympathy of our people, for truly this untimely death has touched with sorrow every heart in Ellaville. A special from Buena Vista gives the following account of the burning of Mr. I.P. Blue's residence, and the sad death of the devoted mother. Mr. Blue was away from home. The fire broke out about 3 o'clock. When Mrs. Blue awoke the house was ablaze. Leaving two children in her own room she ran to another room and called her two eldest boys. They hurried out and with their mother escaped to the ground. Then Mrs. Blue remembered that she had not awakened the children in her own room. Frantic at the thought that these were in danger of burning, she made desparate efforts to return to them through the dining room. In the meantime the two boys whom she had awakened gained the room in which the other children were sleeping by breaking open a window and saved them both. The mother still wild and frantic and not knowing that the children were all safe, continued to fight her way through the flames and blinding smoke. She fell overcome with the heat and stifled by the smoke and perished in the flames. When the citizens reached the scene the four children were shivering in their night clothes and crying bitterly for their mother. The charred remains of the unfortunate woman were taken from the ashes yesterday and were prepared for burial. (Transcriber's Note: I believe this to be Melissa Snelgrove Blue, wife of Isaac Peoples Blue. Mr. Blue was church clerk for Ramah Primitive Baptist Church and in Rena Cobb's Marion County history book it makes reference to the fact I.P. Blue's house burned and all of the early church records were lost in the fire. I.P. Blue also served as clerk of Phillippi Primitive Baptist church for a number of years and those minutes are available in the Schley county archives.) Mathews and Lula T. Murphy. The decorations were profuse and thoroughly artistic graceful vines were twined about the pulpit and alter tail while great banks of foliage plants made a veritable tower of beauty. Over each isle was an arch of evergreen with waxen tapers gleaming brightly from the dark background, tapers were also placed at regular intervals around the channel (?), their soft light giving a charming effect to the scene. Two snow-white doves were suspended from the pulpit and garlands hung in festoons against the white wall. Under the skillful touch of Miss Nina Williams the sweet strains of Mendelssohn's wedding march filled the church and a hush fell on the large audience as the bridal party entered in the following order: The ushers Henry J. Williams and A.A. Arrington marched down the isle and took the stand, then came Miss Nell Davis, Ame! ricus with Mr. Roy Baisden, Americus, Miss Leila Hornady with Mr. T.P. Branch, Shellman; Miss Charlie Wynn Baisden of Americus with Mr. Henry Branham of Fort Valley. The bride in a stylish traveling gown of brown and tan came down the aisle leaning on the arm of the groom. They stood beneath a large floral arch as Rev. Geo. W. Mathews, a brother of the groom, spoke the solemn words that made them one. The bride's maids wore elegant street toilets and looked unusually charming. After the ceremony the bridal party left on the 6:30 train via Columbus for Fort Valley where they will reside. Col. Mathews is a prominent and successful lawyer and a gentleman of exception character, while the bride is possessed of a decidedly attractive personality, and all the graces of lovely womanhood. Both are widely and justly popular. The reception from 4 to 6 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Murphy was elegant in every detail. The entire house was elaborately decorated with palms and! ferns that lent an additional beauty to the bright interior. The dec orations in the dining room were superb. Fragrant hyacinths and narcissus mingled their delicate beauty with more splendid blossoms. The delicious menu was beautifully served. Many hearty congratulations were showered upon the happy couple, and hosts of friends wish them all possible happiness. W.R. HUDSON The remains of Mr. W.R. Hudson were interred in our cemetery on last Thursday afternoon. For several years he was in poor health and under an acute attack of paralysis, he rapidly grew worse and on last Wednesday night passed away at the home of his brother Mr. J.B. Hudson. He was 41 years of age and had spent the greater part of his life in this county. His death touched with particular sadness the hearts of those who had known him from his youth up. Mr. Hudson was ever kind hearted and obliging and few could claim more friends than he. Tender and sincere is the sympathy that goes out to the widowed heart of the faithful and devoted wife. In this world of change it is comforting to know that "God judgeth the heart" and we trust that through the bountiful love of Him who delights to forgive, our friend has exchanged the pains and afflictions of the earth for an abiding place in the house not made with hands.
