HALSTEAD PASSES AT 84 Mr. S.B. Halstead, 84, Schley county surveyor for 34 years and well known as a school teacher and student of local history, died Tuesday morning at 2 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.A. Myrick, at Rupert, after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted at Fellowship church in Schley county with the Rev. J.L. Whitley, of Mauk, officiating. Born near Dothan, Ala., November 3, 1858, Mr. Halstead, familiarly known as Bentley, moved to Schley county at the age of two and with the exception of a few years in south Georgia when a young man, spent his entire life in the county. Mr. Halstead held wide attention for years as one of the most through schoolmasters of his time, the era when one teacher instructed sixty or more pupils crowded in one-room rural school-houses. Mathematics was the subject foremost in his mind and throughout his life he found great interest in solving tough problems. Absorbed in the history and legend of his county, Mrs. Halstead furnished Mrs. H.J. Williams much valuable information when she wrote the History of Schley County more than a decade ago. One of his chief delights was discussing the development of this section. He served as surveyor until advanced aged forced his retirement several years ago. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. C.H. Myrick, Phoenix City, Ala.; Mrs. Lewis Henry, Albany; Mrs. W.A. Myrick; eight sons, J.G. and M. C. Halstead, Cairo; W.B. Halstead. West Palm Beach, Fla.; and S.B. Halstead, Albany; G.D. and Carl Halstead, Ellaville; three sisters, Mrs. J.D. Hammack, Wallis, Texas; Mrs. Mattie Gaulding, Port St. Jo (Joe), Fla., and Mrs. Eliza Eason, Florida. Pallbearers were Herbert Phillips, W.E. Wallis, Joel Myrick, J.T. Oliver, John Willis and Wallace Bell. The Ellaville Sun Friday, Dec. 23, 1938 No. 25 SCHLEY SLANTS by Raymond Duncan The opening paragraphs of today's column should not be called "personal journalism." They are only a few lines to my friends, many of whom I shall not see before the holidays. I want to wish each of my subscribers--and their friends who borrow the paper--a satisfying Christmas. And I am sending along a greeting to express this wish: THE CHRISTMAS STORY. I am calling attention to this feature because I sincerely want each reader to regard it as a personal greeting card from me. It was planned in October, written and edited in November and printed two weeks ago. Published on book paper, it contains no advertisements and was intended to present a balanced coverage of the season. I make only one comment: nowhere in my newspaper experience have I found anything so fascinating as working on the modern news story adaptation of the birth of Christ. Although representatives of the paper have had only two weeks to show it to the public, several thousand copies already have b! een bought, many being mailed to distant points, including virtually every state in the union. Copies will be mailed anywhere in an attractive holiday wrapper for 12 cents, the name of the sender being written in the space below "Season's Greetings", where my signature appears on member's copies. (Transcriber's note: I regret that apparently the supplement mentioned above was not filmed with the rest of the paper. Perhaps it was kept as a souvenir and not sent to the film lab with the rest of the paper.) HE'S AN HONEST BOY, AND COULDN'T DENY IT-- Charlie Wall, Jr., who sells advertising for The Sun, had one he couldn't answer this week. When a prospect replied to some angle of his sales talk by saying, "You're full of prunes", Charlie couldn't deny it. For he's on a diet of prunes. BUS DRIVERS SURPRISE SUPERINTENDENT-- The eight bus drivers of the Schley county school system pulled their annual surprise on County School Superintendent J.L. Duncan last week by presenting him an attractive Christmas package containing a shirt with tie and socks to match. He asks this column to express his appreciation. HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALLERS AWAITING SANTA-- Here is a letter which is self explanatory: Dear Santa: We are a group of young, little boys who play basketball for S.C.H.S. We have been real good this season winning six games and losing only two. Won't you please bring us two good guards, a center, and two good forwards. Don't forget our coach, Mr. Hatcher, and our little substitutes. Lots of love from. S.C.H.S. Boys' Basketball Team THEY WILL ONLY GET GREETINGS-- Birthday greetings today go out to those unfortunates who get just that--greetings. For their anniversaries fall too near Christmas for remembrances other than words to be given. Christmas Eve is a birthday for Mrs. John Wall, Mrs. Charles Wall and Mr. Arthur Cook. And Christmas Day marks anniversaries for Mrs. C.S. Wall and Bob Hill. Other Anniversaries include: Archer Avary, Jr., Dec. 18; Mary Burnam Williamson, Dec. 20; Elmo Pilcher, Dec. 21; Mrs. S.M. Etheridge, Mrs. T.J. Cook, Mrs. J.R. Bridges, Dec. 21; Elmo Pilcher, Dec. 22 (not a transcription typo); Charles Wall, Jr., Dec. 28. Mr. and Mrs. William B. Jordan celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary Thursday, Dec. 22. IRA WANTED ALL HIS FRIENDS TO HAVE ONE-- Ira T. Jones of Americus, former Ellaville boy, who drew the cover design for the Christmas supplement, halted the writer as he entered the Rylander Theatre, where Ira is an usher, the other night. "How about sending me two papers tomorrow," requested Ira, "I want to send all my friends one." CONGRATULATIONS TO PAUL AND "BUDDY"-- Congratulations to both Paul Tondee and "Buddy" Battle on their business changes, announced in today's paper. Both of them give efficiency and popularity to jobs that demand efficiency and popularity. PAUL TONDEE JOINS BUSINESS WITH HIS FATHER JANUARY 1 Charles Battle Will Succeed Tondee As Assistant Postmaster Paul Tondee has resigned as assistant postmaster here, effective December 31, to enter business with his father, W.T. Tondee, local merchant, Postmaster James H. Hart told The Sun Thursday. Hart announced he had appointed Charles (Buddy) Battle, well-known Ellaville young man, to succeed Tondee. A graduate of Ellaville high school in 1933, Tondee entered the post office more than three years ago and has been a popular official. He said he would announce further plans regarding his business connection next week. The son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Battle, the newly-named postal assistant was graduated from Ellaville high school in 1932 and Georgia Southwestern college, Americus, in 1934. Since that time he has represented an insurance company and has been employed at the M and M Store, his present connection. MILES RESIGNS SCHOOL BOARD POSITION S.W. Miles has resigned as secretary and treasurer of the Ellaville school board at the insistence of his physician who advised that he discontinue some of his offices of public service for the sake of his health. Miles, who has served as secretary and treasurer of the local board for the past five years, recently was elected mayor for 1939. He also is clerk of the Baptist church. S.A. Manning, chairman of the board of trustees for the past two years, has assumed Mr. Miles' duties and T.H. Stevens, vice-chairman, has been elevated to the chairmanship until the board names a successor. Miles' position will be filled at the annual election in January. TWIN GIRLS--BLONDE AND BRUNETTE--BORN TO MRS. JAKE SMITH Twin girls--a blonde and a brunette--were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jake O. Smith of Schley county Tuesday night. It dates from the late teens and early 1920's up until the mid 1940's when the McMath family owned the Americus Peach Company. It comprised some 5,000 acres of family owned peach orchards in Schley and Sumter counties. They also bought peaches from surrounding farmers for shipping to markets in New York, Chicago & Philadelphia. This was once a booming business in the Schley/Sumter county area. Each company had their own label and sometimes several. They are highly collectible today for their historic significance and colorful artwork. The family also owns the Americus Oil Company which was established in 1885. The 22nd & 23rd issues of the paper are missing from the microfilm. The Ellaville Sun Friday, December 16, 1938 No. 2 "ALWAYS SWEETHEARTS," SCHLEY PAIR MARK 63RD ANNIVERSARY Toothache Brought Couple Together 77 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. James Asbury Chapman, who began "playing sweetheart" more than 75 years ago, reached the eve of their 63rd wedding anniversary Thursday with a wistful wish that they could live out their days together again just as they have lived them. They were married 63 years ago tonight (Friday) after a courtship that began in early childhood and ripened unto betrothal in adolescence. "Why, we've been sweethearts all our lives," declared Mr. Chapman when asked when they fell in love. A toothache brought them together almost in infancy, the 83-year-old retired Schley county farmer likes to recall. A boy of six or seven years, he called to have her father, the neighborhood's amateur dentist who "didn't charge anything to pull 'em," extract a tooth. He saw her, a little girl of four or five years. "She was a pretty little thing. She had black hair--black as a crow--aw, she was a pretty little thing!" And turning to his 81-year-old wife who sat knitting with a contented smile, he confided in a lower tone: "You know, I've always thought you were the prettiest thing." "We 'played sweetheart' when she was playing with dolls made of pine tops," he remembered. Early in youth he began asking her to marry him. They kept "steady company" and as he put it, his "horse was tied to her hitching post every Sunday afternoon." Neither of them can remember how old she was the first time he proposed, but they know she wasn't 16. "I put him off three times. I told him I couldn't marry anybody as young as I was." He was taking the proposals seriously though. Far more seriously than she thought. "He had made up his mind the last time he asked me that I would never get a chance to turn him down again--and if I had known it, it would have scared me half to death! I never dreamed he had anything like that packed back in his head!" She said "yes" that time, however, and there followed an engagement of about two years. Recalling that she had mentioned several minutes before that she had been taking medicine for heart trouble, she declared with a laugh: "If I had known he felt that way about asking me to marry him, I would have had heart trouble much sooner than I did!" Blue-eyed and 18, she, Alice Chesterfield DeVane became his bride at a simple ceremony performed by the Rev. R.F. Williamson, Methodist minister at Ellaville. "We had supper afterwards," said Mrs. Chapman, with a hearty chuckle, "and they had syllabub ......... but 'Pa' (Mr. Chapman) wouldn't drink any ....... I liked it, but I didn't drink any because he wouldn't." Splendid health has blessed the aged couple and advancing years have little affected their daily routine, Mr. Chapman arises early and kindles fires in their room and the kitchen. He brings in the firewood, milks two cows daily, draws water from the well and attends to various chores. His eyesight remains normal and he uses glasses only for reading. His hearing is impaired, however. Mrs. Chapman insists upon cooking, preparing breakfast at the regular time despite the weather. She likes to crochet, her eyesight is good, her hearing unimpaired. Born Nov. 15, 1857, Mrs. Chapman was the daughter of Liza Sellars DeVane and John Sellars DeVane. She had three sisters and nine brothers. One brother, Frank DeVane, Chattanooga, Tenn., is 94. Mr. Chapman was born Sept 18, 1855, the son of Sara Winifred Carter Chapman and William Thomas Chapman. He is the only survivor of seven children. They had six children, five of whom are living. They are Chesterfield, Henry and Compton Chapman, all of Schley county; Mrs. Lily DeVane of Albany, Ga., and J. Martin Chapman of LeGrand, Cal. They have 15 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. With the exception of about three years spent in Albany, the couple have lived their entire life in Schley county near their birthplaces. Mrs. Chapman vividly recalls being assigned "to watch for the Yankees while the rest of the family hid everything in the woods." Her father and three brothers went to the battle front to fight for the south and all escaped injury. Said Mrs. Chapman: "I believe it was my mother's prayers that brought them back." They dislike to criticize modern living. Declared Mr. Chapman: "I refrain from expressing my opinion, because of my age. I see so many things I don't approve of .... but I may be wrong." Suggested his gray-haired wife: "It is best to live right yourself and pass it unnoticed." SCHLEY SLANTS by Raymond Duncan CHARLIE RENEAU FEELS TOUCH OF PICKPOCKET Charlie Reneau, miller at Dozier's Mill, felt the touch of a pickpocket last Saturday just in time to prevent the theft, but was outdistanced in the race that followed. Charlie said two Indians, or Gypsies (he wasn't positive about the race) entered the mill house and one asked to buy some meal. While he was getting it, he thought he felt a slight wriggle in his hip pocket. He was right. The woman had worked his billfold three-quarters of the way out. The miller fumbled for his jacknife, finally ripped it out and set chase but the intruders beat him to their automobile where accomplices were waiting to speed them away. TIE WITH OGLETHORPE ENDS SCHLEY GIRLS STREAK WITH 11 High Schoolers Recess For Christmas Holidays The wonder girls' basketball team of Schley county high school begins the Christmas holidays today with only a tie with Oglethorpe to mar a perfect fall campaign in which 11 victories were registered. Oglethorpe upset the locals Monday night to gain a 31-31 tie. The girls recorded their 11th straight decision over Richland here last Friday night, winning easily by 25 to 13. Lillian Purvis hooped 13 points to pace the scorers. Ellaville's boys divided their games for the past week. The locals thumped Richland, 27 to 24, in a keenly contested battle but lost to Oglethorpe, 40 to 32, although their fine showing against the highly rated Oglethorpe club was encouraging.
