While Ms Hoch may have gotten the date of Henry's death wrong (might she have meant 1817 rather than 1807), is the manner of his passing now in doubt also? The last time I checked Henry Garvin is not listed on the Valley Forge muster roll although his unit is listed. The only Garvins on the muster roll are a George Garvin of NJ and a Thomas Garvin of PA. There are no Girvans listed. John T. Hi John, I really don't know, except here's something to chew on. Among the things I got from the Pa. State Archives was this accounting for Henry Garvin's pension: !MILITARY PENSION: Records of the Department of the Auditor General (Pennsylvania), Military Pension Accounts and Related Papers (series #2.53), Pension Ledger, Special Acts of Assembly, 1812-1838, vol. 7, p. 105 Henry Garvin to commence from 17 Feby 1814 1814 Febry To Gratuity $40.00 1815 June To 12 Mo. pension due 17 Feby last $40.00 1816 Feby " " " " " inst $40.00 1817 July " " " " " Feby last $40.00 1818 Jany " " " " " August $20.00 1818 July " " " " " Feb 1818 $20.00 1819 Jany " " " " " Aug't 1818 $20.00 So my guess would be that he died either in late 1818 and the family didn't notify the authorities, thus triggering another payment in January, or else he died between January and July 1819. For my part, I'm going to check western Pa. newspapers to see if they covered Henry's drowning. I very quickly skimmed the Adams Co., Pa. newspaper "Adams Centinel" and found one drowning reported for Frederickstown, Md. on April 13, 1819 "Unfortunate Occurrence" is how they put it. I think it's safe to say that family sources have been mined as far as they can be -- we'll just have to be lucky if something else turns up. By the way, I have done extensive work on gathering the family of Henry and Sarah's daughter, Sarah Ann Garvin Barnhart Misner.
