    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: pushyface Surnames: de Suffren, Suffren, Suffern, Mawhinney. Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.garvin/136.269.270.271.288.300.302.303.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi to all who took part in this Suffern discussion. I am rather late in posting this as I have just tripped over this section of the message-board so I hope you are still registered!! I have a mish-mash of de Suffrens, Suffrens, Sufferns and Suffrins that need to be sorted once and for all in my family tree. An Aussie with a paternal grandmother, Kate Alexandra Suffren (maiden name)in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, who "knew" the name had been Anglicised from "de Suffren" a few generations earlier and whose father was John Suffren,(m.Elizabeth Fenton) whose father was John Suffren (m.Margaret Mawhinney) and so on, back to St John, New Brunswick. Extensive research has been undertaken by a number if branches in the family and although most seem to point to the Huguenots who fled to Ireland there is still no conclusive evidence to their origins. I was rather interested to find references to Jean Andre de Suffren de Chaney on the internet. The research indicated that he was inf! act the US artist Jules Arnault, who is buried at the Rampo Reformed Cemetery at Mahwah, New Jersey but to whom I can find no reference. There was a comment in that research that he was a nephew of Admiral Pierre Andre de Suffren de Saint Tropez, to whom my branch is supposed to link. The problem is, to which of the Admiral's siblings does he belong to?? If there is any evidence, it could be conclusive from my point of view that the New Brunswick and the New Jersey families are connected. As the two areas are so close to each other and the timelines are similar I can't help but wonder if this theory is correct. So as not to ramble I will wait patiently for a reply. Hope someone can help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
