By 1880, James Garvin and his wife Eliza Nagle Garvin had moved to Philadelphia, and raised Margaret b.1859, Catherine b.1866, Thomas b.1868, James b.1872, John b.1873 & Edward b.1878, in the neighborhood around 21st & Carleton Sts. (The Ben Franklin Parkway construction 1912-1917 resulted in the demolition of this neighborhood.) I am Margaret Garvin Lawler's great-granddaughter. I don't know where my James Garvin grew up or who his parents or grandparents were, but Danville is in the same central Pa/Susquehanna River area as Tyrone Twp., though farther north. I'd love to hear of any further info you've acquired, if you'd like to share it. Peggy Lawler [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great-great-grandfather was James Garvin (1828-1887), who was born in Pa of Irish-born parents. In 1880, James Garvin was living with his wife Eliza Nagle Garvin on Carleton St. near 21st, with their children Margaret, Catherine, Thomas, James, John & Edward. You could be a descendant of any of the boys. All I know about them is that Edward Garvin (1878-1940) married Elizabeth Harrington (d. 1966), and they are buried in Hillside Cemetery in Roslyn, which is not far from Abington. Perhaps a newspaper obituary could give you names of any descendants. Good Luck! Peggy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Isaac Jordan Garvin was my great grandfather. His son, Samuel Clifton was my Grandfather and his son, Clyde J. was my father. I have been doing this searching for many years off and on and now am serious about going back before Isaac. There appeared to be two Isaac Jordan Garvins in Kentucky about the same time, but one married Jane(Jenny) Huston and one married Sarah Catherine (Kate) Martin. The Isaac who married Kate Martin is my family. This I know because they are all buried in Graceland Cemetery in Cameron, Missouri. Before Isaac, the info I have said that the family was in North Carolina and also in Virginia. Do we match on anything? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Garvin was one of the "immortals" that arrived with a group of others after it was already under seige. I got a copy of the probate document showing that his brother and sister petitioned the court for his estate (all who died were given land). The brother was Robert Garvin of Alabama and the sister was from Mississippi. With the help of Lloyd Bockstruck of the Dallas Library I was able to determine that his father was named Daniel Garvin who lived in Abbeville, SC before moving with his family to Georgia and then to Alabama. His wife's name was Jane Manley. The children were: Robert (the eldest), John E. (the Alamo hero), Anne (the sister who married someone named Smith), and William (the youngest and who might not have been born when they lived in SC). I have not been able to learn anything about the ancestry of Daniel Garvin. If anybody knows anything please post to this board. I traced this back in hopes that I was related to the Alamo hero, but I've learned enough to say with some confidence that I am not. Still, I am curious. I direct and ordain Mary my wife and executrix and Patrick Wallace and John Davidson executors of this my last Will and Testament in trust for the intent and ----- in this my last Will contained. In witness whereof I have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and seal the day and year above written signed sealed and delivered by the said John Garvin as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who were present at the signing and sealing thereof. Robert Welch Jane Welsh (her mark) John Garvin (seal) Be it remembered that on the 21st of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-seven the last will and Testament of John Garvin deceased was legally proved (of which the foregoing record is a true copy) and letters testamentary issued in Common form to Mary Garvin widow and John Davidson executors therein named on the said 21 day of March 1787. Inventory and account to be exhibited into the Registers office in Carlisle in the time appointed by law. William Lyon, Registrar ================================= It appears that John is identical with the John Garvin, Middleton Twp., Cumberland Co., Pa. shown as a taxpayer in 1779, 1780, 1781, and 1782. (Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series, Vol. 20, pp. 199, 336, 487 and 645). John evidently purchased his 81 acre farm in Tyrone Twp., from Patrick McCanna (Cumberland Co. Deeds Vo. 1, Book E, 19 Apr 1778, recorded 30 Apr 1778) =============================================== My interest in John Garvin stems from the fact that our relative Henry Garvin and his wife, Sarah McKee are known to have lived in Cumberland County and owned land in Middleton Twp. in 1802.
