My Great, GreatGrandmother' maiden name was - as she said on four legal docunments - GARRISON, not Hardin And, she married James (no middle initial) McCanless - not the oft-posted James Madison McCanless, born in 1821 (less than age 9 when my G, G, Grandparents married in 1830. But the Myth continues to be posted on the internet!!! Yes, Delila was a Murphy.before she married William Black. Jerome Black was Sheriff of Leon County, TX on two different occasions - his 1st wife, Elizabeth (Parks of Jackson Co Ala), was buried in Liberty Cemetery in Leon Co. (three rows from my McCanless/Reeder/Durant ancestors) Later, he married Julia Lacey. I have not found grave markers for Jerome, his brothers and sisters, or his Mother - but Gavin S. Black has a son buried in Russell Cemetery in Leon Co - the only inscribed marker in a group of several brown, native, stones in that cemetery. (very near some Durant graves!) Have more info on Delila's children who came to Leon Co TX. And other families who came from Marshall/Jackson Co area to settle in Leon Co TX - Bain, Jetton and Dickey. (By the way, I was born in Leon County, Texas . . .) Melton E. Durant Jacksonville, TX [email protected]
