This is what I have from the census. In 1870, Nemencia is living with her father in Lawrence County Al with her children. She did not have a George W. or Silas 11 in the 1860 cenus. They were the children of another Silas in WInston County and many researchers get the two lines confused. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: CLAYTON PRICE WALKER GARRISON TAYLOR Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.garrison/3515.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The above message is unsigned, but perhaps it is from the DAR member named Barbara ________. I sent to Barbara two emails on the Silas Messer GARRISON III line, but she failed to reply so who knows if she received them or not. With spamblockers one cannot tell if an email gets delivered or not. Would she not have written in response to good info-- the first wife, Lula PRICE (no issue), and the second wife, Dolly CLAYTON (mother of James D., Ira H., Mattie, and Lula) names... Importantly, any DAR person looking at the Silas Messer III line would enjoy reading a letter in the DAR, Houston files, at the Clayton Pub Lib, DAR adjacent building. Garrison researcher, Juanitas Irene Peddicord of 1513 N. Chenango, Angleton, Texas 77515, was responding on 16 June 1978 to Mr Wm H. TAYLOR, 502 Church St., Georgetown, IL 61846. Mr Taylor had obviously sent her a letter (which I do not have)- I mention this because Mr. Taylor raised an adoption issue for the older children of Silas Messer Garrison Jr, of Winston ALab. 1860 census. She replies [and posts the 1860 census info on the side of this page]: " Back to your [Mr. TAYLOR] Silas M Jr in Winston Co., 1860, if Neomancin [M. Elkins]was a widow and had Geo. W. and Silas M. WHEN SHE MARRIED, her husband ADOPTED them and gave them the Garrison name, the other births, beginning 6 years later, would fit Silas M., Jr.'s being with his father, Silas M, Sr. in the 1850 census and married after 1850" * * * So, George W. Garrison (age 13) in 1860 Census, and Silas Messer Garrison III (age 11) in 1860 Census, would not have either the DNA or the DAR blood lineage to claim, if Mr. TAYLOR's adoption information is true. Mr. Taylor must have been the one who typed the extensive lineage of Silas M Garrison III, on which I found the two wives (of Silas III) names, before 3rd wife, Amanda S. Walker. It is very detailed, and certainly authentic. Was the DNA of this Stephen Garrison line, done from widow's Neomancin M. ELKINS adopted branch (George W. Garrison, Silas Messer III)-- If the DAR woman gets this posting, please confirm that you are aware of this adoption issue. A DNA test would address this problem. It looks like Silas Messer Garrison Jr, born ca.1821, Walker Co, AL, enlisted 1862 in Confederate Army, entered with Typhoid Fever, then died with pneumonia, 24 Apr 1862, at the Chimborazo Hospital No. 3, Richmond, VA. I wonder if his was one of those unmarked GARRISON graves I walked over in that large Richmond, VA cemetery (the one with that huge tower of stones for all the confederate deaths) - weren't the two GARRISON graves there, from an Alabama company.... if so, the family should have the grave marked. Silas Messer GARRISON, Jr., Private, Company C, 9th Ala. Infantry, CSA, out of Lawrence Co., Alabama. He enlisted 24 Feb 1862, and was dead two short months later, 24 April 1862.

Listers, You may have noticed the Rootsweb Message Boards have been updated with new software. All my surname lists are gatewayed to the corresponding message boards. One major change is that you no longer see the original poster on a gatewayed message which means you CAN'T respond to it FROM the list. If you want to reply, you must click on the link which takes you to the board. From there you can either email the original poster privately (if their email is available) or post a reply on the list. As an example, you will see ALL gatewayed messages come from gc-gateway@rootsweb.com. That address is generic and unmonitored - that is, your reply goes into cyberspace. Don't forget some but not all Message Boards Users subscribe to the mailing lists. Any questions please email me privately.
