I am a great-great grandchild of George Washington Garrison through his child Bertha Iona Garrison (1880-1938). My great-grandmother Bertha married Ira Forrest Meek (1876-1943) on 13 August 1899 in Hennessey, OK, and at some point they moved to Kansas. That is where their youngest child, my grandmother Bettye Maye Meek, was born on 13 October 1923. She died in Springfield, MI on 19 May 1953. Please forward your current email address to me so that I can correspond with you about our shared ancestor. For quite some time I had been told by family members that George Washington Garrison was married to someone named "Nancy" or "Mary Anna Mamby." Before reading your posts I had never heard of Mahala Collins. I hope to hear from you soon, and I would love to hear from others with information on any of these individuals. Thanks in advance!

This is a real long shot. What is your James Garrison's connetion to N.J. ? We have a Daniel H. Garrison born N.J. about 1815. He next shows up in about 1846 in Macon Co., Ala. He is a conducter/engineer and also a farmer. He is married to Susan A. Cooper about 1856. Children were William N. Garrison (died age 2 ) Mary, Sarah or Sallie, James Daniel, Talula and Alice Virginia. Daniel is killed in the Civil War in 1862. His widow and children moved back to Barnwell, S.C. where her family had lived during her childhood and where she still had family. In the 1870 census for Barnwell, some of the Garrison children are there, Mary, Talula and James. The other children and Susan don't appear in the census. But there are three Garrison ladies living with the children. They were Mary , Sallie, and Emma. Their relationship to the children is not known, nor is it known where Susan and the other children are. In the 1880 census, Susan is back with her children and the 3 other Garrison ladies are not there. But there is a new child in the family-Thomas Branford Garrison -born 1870-1874. Parentage unknown. Do any of these ladies names match with your James's children ?? Any Connection ? Sincerely, Dody Anderson

This is the first Garrison-Norris connection I have seen. It is very interesting to me because my ggrandfather (b. 1825) is named James N. Garrison and it is family tradition that the N stands for Norris - James Norris Garrison. He married in Arkansas and migrated to Jack Co. Texas in the 1850s and raised a large family. Do you know of any there other Garrison-Norris connections? Paul Garrison
Daphne; You are correct. Silver nitrate has solved that problem. Joe

I've noticed that several list members are interested in this family. Franklin and Mahala (Norris) Garrison were my ggg grandparents. I'm descended from Louisa Ellen "Luiza" who was not blind. Franklin was the son of Benjamin and Susannah (King or Dunagan) Garrison of Barren Co, KY and Mahala was the daughter of William and Phoebe (Dunagan) Norris, also from Barren Co. Both families migrated to Indiana in the mid-1820s, settling in first Owen Co, later Morgan Co. Frank and Mahala were married in Morgan Co 12 Dec 1839. None of their six blind children ever married or had children of their own, although at least two or three of them had productive lives. Most of the sighted children married and several of their descendants still live in south central Indiana. There were no futher incidents of congenital blindness of which I'm aware. One possible insight into the cause of six blind children in Frank and Mahala' family: If Franklin's mother's maiden name was Dunagan (rather than King; the information is unclear), then his spouse Mahala Norris was probably his first cousin! I am pretty sure that the silver nitrate ointment is to kill the bacteria that might cause blindmess (like syphilis). The ointment (silver nitrate, I believe?) was introduced to combat blindness caused by the use of oxygen at birth. I am not sure how that causes blindness, but it was one of the etiology discussions in my special education coursework as an undergrad.
