    1. RE: [GARRISON] Answer to Abner Garrison Line Research
    2. D.Richey
    3. Marti; I figure if the Garrisons were in Barren County and then in Hart Co. which used part of Barren at its beginning, then there was probably some kinship. If William lied about his age, saying he was younger than he really was in order to enlist with the volunteers from Illinois for the civil war, then he could have been George's son. I don't know if that would have made any difference to the army. If we ever find that he was fathered by another man then the relationship to all the Garrisons is no more than a half brother to Anne's children with George Garrison. That makes him a Garrison in name only. I guess that DNA testing would prove such a possibility. I still would like to know which family George came from. Some day it would be neat to visit the Kentucky Garrisons and see how much they look like our Illinois Garrisons. In answer to your next email, no, I don't have pictures of George Garrison. I do have pictures of William in his Civil War uniform and again in the early 1870s. I have to keep in mind that the information I have says that George died in 1828 or 1829. William was born 02 October 1830 according to his enlistment papers. If that was a baptism date he could have been born earlier. So far I have no record of where George died nor where he is buried. There may have been several Georges, also. So I have to keep with the one who married Anne Laird (several spellings of her name). Ain't this fun. Daphne * * * Hi, Daphne! I keep thinking your George is somehow connected to mine...but since you have it established, I guess not. <clip> Marti.

    2. Hi, Daphne! I keep thinking your George is somehow connected to mine...but since you have it established, I guess not. I don't have all the sons of Paul as a for sure. Edmund...who was in Barren Co., Kentucky 1810 probably with Paul in the household. Sam Garrison believes that Benjamin is mine. I think Shadrach is but Sam disagrees...and I don't know who any of the others are.........I do wish I had a time machine! I have been neglecting other lines for this Garrison one...not to mention all the other things in my life I am neglecting!!! Good to hear from you! Marti

    2. HI, Helyn! I am not in the Garrison Association as their group is for descendants of an Isaac Garrison and that is what is included in their book, from what I understand. But you could write to [email protected] who could perhaps tell you better than I. Or..if Rena answers she is a part of the Association. I have seen your name on here but I can't remember the particulars of your William born 1811. Can you tell me more about him? Do you know where he was born? Why do you think his father was named Joseph? Do you have then names of his children by chance? And where he migrated? Probably I cannot be of help, but ya never know! Marti

    2. Hi, Could you explain to me what the Garrison Association is? Where can I get in touch with them? I have seen thru Ancestry.com message board that there might be a "Garrison Book". Rena or Marti, would either of you know anything about that? I realize you are both busy ladies but any info would be greatly appreciated...I've seem to have come to a stumbling block with a ggg grandfather, WILLIAM GARRISON b. abt. 1811. His father might have been a JOSEPH GARRISON... Probably not yours but the book or Association might help... Thanks, Helyn (Garrison) Ott

    2. Marti I cannot go on and on about this I told you I would send it to you when I had time and tried ot explain to you I was gone for two months end of Last year to visit my boys in Texas and am in Missour now trying to do some research and also to visit as many of the old timers that I can before they are gone and have told you I would get it to you as soon as possible I have a quadraplegic daughter I take care of also and am busy with a multitude of things that have happened after I spoke with you including going to CA to get a canine companion service dog for my daughter and training of such. It is not like I can just drop everything and do what you have asked. I will when I GET the chance IN fact I do not know why I am explaining anything to you except that I am a very nice person and especially do not like to see anyone so upset as you are especially over the great joy of genealogy research.. And I ask the list to please be patient with this I am sorry it has been on and will not be again from me When I get the time when I get home I will put the information on the list which I will be glad to for whoever is interested in the David Garrison line son of Issac 1732 Best to you all and have a great week Rena Colorado

    1. Re: [GARRISON] Answer to Abner Garrison Line Research
    2. Well, then, Rena, if you have done some of the research that Marie did, why didn't you give me evidence when I asked you what evidence you had re: Abner being a brother of John and Joseph and also a son of David? If you have a file of your research that shows this, I would still love to see some of it. Remember, I asked you for it some time ago and you told me the Garrison Association had all the evidence..So..I'd still love to see what you have. And ..what about the censuses of David that I asked you about, which would at least show the possibility? I am not cut in iron until I have absolute proof and someone is telling me I am mixed up and have the wrong family, and "going on" about Paul and so on. Then, when I can see that it is not going to be discussed but rejected as my being "mixed up," I tend to get testy. It would be nice to have talked to older folks in all the lines..and I, in fact, do talk to my uncle who is 80 and somedays he remember things real clearly but not always. And I listened to my grandmother intently all my life because I was interested in family..past and present..but ya know, the info from a couple generations before her was not always right...time changes things, blends it, changes colors, fades away. I was listening to her all of my life, as she lived with us and raised us while my mama worked. They give directions to research in. YOu are not, believe it or not, the only one who had older family to talk to. I am not saying family information is all bad..it's GOOD..but if it flies in the face of actual documentation which comes from more than one source, then ya gotta look it over carefully, Rena. And remember that those depositions ARE from family. If you are not from Abner, but Joseph and John, it is not YOUR family but it Is mine. We all go in more than one direction, Rena...genealogy is certainly not all ANY of us have in our lives. We all have families, jobs, gardens, friends, chores, hobbies other than genealogy....You are not the only one. So if you get around to sending me some of the "COLD" hard facts you pick up in Missouri, thank you very much and if you don't...that is your business...you can do what you like. <<Keep up your research and please do not be so cut in iron sometimes and enjoy your research and genealogy work as you go alone>> Do you mean "along" instead of :"alone?" If you mean "alone" I am not..I have a group of cousins working on our heritage. If you mean as I go along, I would say the same to you and thank you. And I will await the censuses that will allow me to check David out, as to his children. Marti

    3. Marti and Rena (if she is listening); It is very interesting to follow along when you two discuss the Isaac Garrison line and others of the same vintage. Just as a recap, I am Daphne Richey (nee Garrison) daughter of Norman Garrison (1900-1993) who was son of William Mahlon Garrison (1862-1941) who was son of William "Lloyd" Garrison (1830-1876) whose mother was Anne Laird - wife of George Garrison. Sometimes I wish that was the only line for my research but it is not. I shall say "Goodnight and take care. May tomorrow be a nice day." 2. Marti at this time I got half way thru your letter to me and am telling you now at this time the information Marie Garrison had was someof my information and research I had done since 1973 and believe me I do not need someone telling me how to do research I have been doing it for over 30 years when all the info was not readily available as it is now and of course I use cold Hard facts as you say but I also use family histories so you can just stop talking of Marie and her information this is my information I am going on Her file is a complete separate file from mine. I am in Missouri now doing some more research for COLD hard facts as you call them and will not be getting back with you till I am back in Colorado as all my Cold hard facts are there Thank you for your time in sending me emails and I respect your research wholeheartedly and remember I am only trying to explain some of the information to you but also I am in a whole lot of directions at once with my life and will TRY to get back with you It is Too bad that a lot of persons were not able to talk with older generations before they passed away and learned all the great family information that is also handed down as I was given the opportunity to do from as early as the 1950's And then to be also in this time and age be able to go out and proof most of it which has been over 30 years of work. Keep up your research and please do not be so cut in iron sometimes and enjoy your research and genealogy work as you go alone Best to you Rena

    03/09/2004 03:15:23
    1. [GARRISON] Re: Abner Garrison line
    2. Dear Rena.............. There is no mixup in my facts regarding Abner, Rena. I want to remind you that family stories and memories get mixed up and changed..it's like playing Telephone when you were a kid. I have been doing genealogy for awhile and what I have found out is that there is a bit of family information that is right but usually not all. And it depends on the day you talk to people sometimes, re: what they remember. And things change in people's memories over time, too. I had stories from my grandmother about her grandmother's name being Mary and in fact it was Sarah and I am guessing it was Sary. When my grandmother's mother died, her second husband who had not ever met her mother, put "Mary" down as the name and I suspect as my grandmother got old, that slipped in somehow and Sary became Mary. That is the way we humans are..we age or time passes, and memories change. You speak of family history from people who still live in the area as opposed to "cold hard facts." Well, cold hard facts can't change with time. I see no census so far that shows a person Abner's age in David's household. I DO see an 1820 and 1830 census which shows a person Abner's age in Edmund's household. For that matter I do not see a census that shows BOTH John and Joseph in David's household. Although John and Joseph are not my targets here. If they are brothers though, you have to find both of them together. So census records don't change..there they are! And Land deeds are indeed hard cold facts. Where and when and who purchased them. There they are. And depostions taken over a hundred years ago by government officials to ascertain whether a CW soldier's wife is going to get a his pension or not are certainly facts. They are not things that will change. They were attested to and remain as attested. Four people, Samuel's cousin Solomon Bartlett, his brother Edward/Edmund, and his two wives, naming Abner Garrison, minister, as Samuel's (son of Isham's ) uncle, on the spot, firsthand..not passed down and not perhaps misconstrued is indeed factual, Rena. Do you remember when I first asked you about Abner, Rena? I thought he might well be ours..he was in Texas County where my Buckner lived and Abner's daughter married and remained there. And there was a spot in Edmund's censuses for a boy Abner's age...but you told me DEFINITELY he was DAvid's son. So I dropped it. Then we got the Deposition papers on Buckner's nephew...and indeed there was an Abner who was his uncle and who was a minister..who had, in fact, performed the boy's first marriage ceremony. So...a minister..that's a clue. This minister lived in Laclede County during the time that soldiers were starting to be seen, according to Samuel's first wife. Another clue! Ahhhhhh!... ok..I checked a Laclede Census and had a contact in Laclede county check it..nope, no Abner Garrison. Hmmmmmm...ok..I asked him to check land records in the 1860s! Ah ha. There is land purchased in 1860 in Laclede County by an Abner Garrison who was residing in Lawrence County, Ark. ( it says that IN the body of the deed).......now..who is in the 1860 census of Lawrence Co, Arkansas? Well, Abner Garrison who is married to Sarah Jane (Booth) Garrison AND the named children of this man. Now..in 1867 the couple sells their land in Laclede County..signed by BOTH Abner and SARAH JANE. Abner and first wife Charity's son James Floyd and Fereby were married in Laclede and there is also a land deed for them there as well. So Abner and Sarah Jane sell their land and they move to Douglas County, MO. and are listed in the 1870 census there. Now tell me how this can be misconstrued? We have 4 people over a hundred years ago testifying to information that includes the naming of this boy's Uncle Abner...and also the brother gives the name of their father..Isham. And the land records of Laclede County show us who this man is. The censuses support it. Tell me, have you, yourself, ever done any research to prove that Abner and John and Joseph are brothers and that they are the sons of David? I have asked you what evidence you have and you tell me a Bible with Abner, John and Joseph's names written in it. Who wrote it? You told me you do not know. Who gave you all this information anyway? From what I hear it was a woman who married into the family, not an actual Garrison who would have had the history in whatever form passed down and hearing it her whole life. It is easy to write names in a Bible...if it is not a family Bible with all the information given, I do not necessarily trust it is legititmate.Anyone can do it and use it for supporting evidence. And I have heard of that very thing being done. And I am DEFINITELY NOT saying you are the someone! I have before me pages photocopied from one of my Garrison family Bibles and there is lots of information in there..not just the names of three of the children in the family. All of the children and their parents' names and birthdates. So this woman who compiled this information is not a Garrison but was married to your cousin Jimmie, who has actually NOT been in Douglas Co. all his life, but went in the service when he was a kid and was gone for 23 years and not much interested in genealogy either, I am told. Rena, one of the first rules of genealogy is not to just accept information done by someone else and give it out as fact. You MUST research that information with records or censuses to find out if it is true. I have no idea what would make someone make up family research that is not true..maybe they make mistakes. I don't know. But one should NEVER just accept information from someone else and without checking it give it back as fact. And did she give you one SHRED of the hard cold evidence we discussed? I have several friends who are descendants of Abner...they do not buy the information given by this woman. So not everyone in your line does. They do not believe that Abner is a brother of John and Joseph and they are not at all sure that David is the father of any of the boys. Could you please give me the censuses where your DAvid is shown with Abner, Joseph and JOhn in his household? Because I can't find them. I was under the impression that this second issue of the Garrison book is being done to correct errors. I would think that, too, you would want to know what your family's heritage really is. I would only like to have Abner's information correct so as not to confuse generations of his descendants. And I would like your book to be correct. This time of year I would really rather be gardening..my plants are calling to me right now..I am taking this on now because I believe that the Garrison Book is going to be published soon and I am trying to help you straighten out this problem in the descendants of David Garrison. As to Joseph and John, I have done no research on them other than not seeing them in the censuses for David when I was looking for Abner. But personally I think you ought to do some hunting on them, too, before saying that the research is right on them..since if it came from the same person, it is not right on Abner. I assume you all want the information in this new book to be as accurate as possible. The pictures that come out of Jimmie's trunk with handwriting that could be that of his wife who constructed this information? It is hard for even family members to identify old photos from long ago correctly. And I know that for a fact! <<That is why it seems to me there is quite a mixup on the Abners being spoke of?? >> You may be mixed up. I am not. You did tell me you were the one who was redoing the section of the book on David and his descendants when I first wrote and that is why I wrote to you and asked for evidence...which you kept putting me off on and finally I told you to send it when you got time. I do know how that is to get time to do things but I got tired of asking. And I wrote to you when I put together this new information and asked if you had any evidence to refute it and I did not hear from you. Edwanna did send me some information for which I was grateful, but there is no EVIDENCE there. I have the deeds on my computer and I can send them to you immediately but they are not that clear there..I can get them copied and send along with the sections in the depositions that mention Isham and Abner. So if you are going to actually consider them I will do that. Let me know when you get home and send me an address. If you prefer I send the deeds that are downloaded, let me know. That can be done immediately. Thank you for your consideration. Marti

Marie Garrison also did extensive research of these lines and is now gone but I have all her research to add to mine which I have been trying research this line since 1973 Also Jimmie had Abners old bible which I have coies of When I get home I will scan to you Abner pic That is why it seems to me there is quite a mixup on the Abners being spoke of?? I am the one that is updating the Garrison book on David's line and some of his sisters so have been watching this discussion closely and if there is any questions would like to TRY to help straighten it up and listen to everyone elses discussions and ideas so that we may have everything right in this update. Please feel free ot send me any info you would like and I will get out a table and lay it all out and be glad to look it over before I finish up this line and also feel free to send me collateral lines or information on your ancestors that might connect into this line or the rest of Issac 1732 children as I can get it to the correct people that are working on them. Thus far, I have not been able to determine what M. G. stands for; or what her maiden name was. Do you know? In the same cemetery plot, there is an Esther Jane Garrison Jones died 2/12/1905, age; 80 years, 9 months, 12 days shown on the stone. 1. Re: [GARRISON] Lydia Garrison ca 1796-ca1870 VA OH IN Joseph Garrison
    2. Hi, Can you tell me where you found the 1820 census of Portage County, OH? I've been looking for a Joseph Garrison and his son, William. Rumor has is that Joseph came from Ireland as a stowaway with his son, William. We know William was born abt. 1811 they both came over when William was around 7 yrs. old. That would mean the boat ride would have happened around 1818 or so. We also know William and maybe Joseph lived in or near Pa or VA.(or maybe both) prior to settling in Portage County, OH. William married Elizabeth Kelsey born in Va. and then settled in Portage County. Their first child was born in 1833 in Portage County so William might not be on the 1820 census yet but I sure would like to check it out. Do you have access to any other census of Portage County, OH? Thanking you in advance, Helyn (Garrison) Ott
