Surnames: Garrison, Van Meter, DuBois Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mEY.2ACEB/1943.1.1 Message Board Post: My David Garrison of Salem, son of Joel and Catherine (DuBois) Garrison, was born in 1769. He married Rebecca Van Meter, daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Berryman) Van Meter, circa 1799. He died 6 May 1833, aged 65y, 9 months and is buried at Clifton Presbyterian Church cemetery (now Clifton-Union Cemetery) at Clifton, Greene Co., Ohio, as "D. Wm. Garrison." His wife Rebecca died 30 Jan 1842, aged 72y, 6m, 13d, and is also buried there. I have another David Garrison who married Rebecca Coperthwait of Burlington County on 17 March 1770 at Salem. As yet I don't know how they fit into the Garrison family lines of Salem and Gloucester counties. RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project Harrison-Heitman <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=harrison-heitman&id=I0423> says this David Garrison was b. 1718 and d. 1775. The site also states that Rebecca Coperthwait, dau. Hugh and Hannah (Atkinson) Coperthwait, had a first husband, A. Stelle (b. 1727, d. 1768). I have not yet gathered any other evidence outside the marriage license to prove or disprove this claim.

    2. Hi, STacey...My Garrisons were in Baltimore in the early 1700s. My Paul Sr. died there. When his son, Paul Jr. left, he left a wife Elizabeth Frazier who remarried within about ten minutes...and there were childen...two being Shadrach and Job. They held public offices in Baltimore and there are records. They may not have remained but I do not have information of them leaving. I know there are more Garrisons than mine there, but thought I would throw that out in case you trace back to a Shadrach and Job, I have information on their family's arrival in Delaware, 1662. Also there is a book entitled Baltimore Families, but, unfortunately I do not know the author...surely the library in Baltimore has it...perhaps your library could get it through interlibrary loans. Good luck. Marti

My line which died early--- comes down from a David (dec. 1790 with small children) & wife Hannah surname unknown >David (1789 or 1790/1814 Salem Cty NJ)& Hannah Cleaver/Clever >Isaac Clever Garrison (1812/1901)-- early baptisms are at Swedish Lutheran Church, Old Swedes, Raccoon Creek, NJ now Swedesborough-- Should you have any pieces which could help, please write. Your David Garrison often gets mixed up with mine, so clarification on your line would help. I have spoken to the cemetery fellow at the Ohio cemetery where Rebecca and David are buried, but I haven't been there yet. Do you have info on Rebecca being married before which would place this marriage record into your line? I am having to eliminate the other David Garrison's marriage records in hopes of pinpointing mine... see entry from rootsweb... "#187; David GARRISON and Jacob VANMETER, both of the County of Salem... [bound to]... William FRANKLIN, Governor... 500 pounds... 17 March 1770. ... David GARRISON... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Rebecca COPERTHWAIT of Burlington County... [w] Joseph COWPERTHWAITE, Rob't BURCHAN" I found this Cowperthwaite name around Staten Island-- I think with a Hugh Cowperthwait-- but could this be Jacob's daughter?? who had earlier married?? please let me know

    1. Re: [GARRISON] Answer to Abner Garrison Line Research
    2. Marti Thank you for answering me back... I did e-mail Rena but 3 heads are better than one! WILLIAM GARRISON (b. abt. 1811-1812) married ELIZABETH ANN KELSEY but I don't know when. Elizabeth went by Ann on all census I could find. Elizabeth was born about 1817 in VA. WILLIAM (per all the census) was born in PA. All family records state WILLIAM'S father was a JOSEPH GARRISON. Family history states he came over from Ireland when WILLIAM was a lad of 7 so that means it the boat ride took place about 1818 or so. It also states there's a good possiblity they were stow-a-ways on the boat. Maybe they settled in PA and just said WILLIAM was born in PA. That's where the stumbling block comes in. I haven't found anything on this JOSEPH or WILLIAM before that. WILLIAM and ELIZABETH settled in PORTAGE CO. OH. Most of their children were born there. ROBERT, ELIHU, HORATIO, ALVIN, LUCIETTE, HANNA AND ELISABETH. The only child born outside of PORTAGE CO. was FRANCIS MARION, who was born in BERRIEN CO. MI. This info can all be verified via the BERRIEN CO. death records. By the way, most of his children went by thier middle name so all the info above took me a good 7 month to decipher. You sound like you've been doing this a lot longer than me. Any suggestions as to where to go next? Thanks for any help given, Helyn

    2. HI, Daphne..Well, mostly digging for our ancestors IS fun...it's like being a private eye which I always thought might be fun, too! I guess if we all keep digging and sharing, more connections will come clear. I could send you some of our Garrison photos if you like...I don't have any of Edmund or Buckner but we have photos of descendants, if you like. Is the photo of Wm. clear enough to make out features? It's been amazing looking at photos of some of our guys, seeing someone here and there who looks very like my dad, for instance. I was looking at a man from Isham the other night and thinking he looked not exactly like my dad, but a lot..and my husband walked in and I said, "Who does this remind you of?" Without hesitating he said, "He looks some like your dad." Genes DO pop up! Marti
