We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di
Hi there, Diane list admin here. Is there anyone on this list that need any help with research from anybody? There hasn't been much going on with this list for a while! Hoping to hear from you soon. Diane list admin
Hi Terri-- My Garrigan ancestors are from Pittsburgh, so I can share some info that might be helpful. No Peters, tho. >From the 1900 Census for Allegheny County: James Garrigan--b. 1840, immigrated from Ireland in 1857 Ellen--wife--b. 1849, immigrated in 1860 Children: Edward--1872 Mary--1874 Joseph (my grandfather)--1877 John--1879 Thomas F.--1884 Raymond--1887 I know that Edward and Mary ended up in Chicago at some point. Mary married Oliver Harber in Pittsburgh and had three daughters. I would be interested in knowing if this family originally lived in PA. I have a Peter Garagan born @1832 in my line. What a welcome! You Garrigans are a friendly lot--make me feel right at home. :) My response is a little delayed because I get the list in digest form. Here is a little more info that may help those of you kind enough to try to fit my Garrigans into your research....James Garrigan, my ggrandfather, allegedly arrived in this country around 1860 from Ireland with a price on his head. He was supposedly wanted by the Brits. No, I have not tried to locate him through the IRA (or whatever they were called back then), and I have not searched for ships. It occurs to me that, if this story has any truth, he would not have listed his birthplace as Ireland, but I don;t know. He did fight in the US Civil War, supposedly survived Andersonville Prison (tho I can't find him there). At any rate, I would accept as kin any James Garrigan who lived at the right time, married Helen (or Ellen) Monaghan and had three sons named Joseph (b. 1877), Raymond, and Frank. :) My mother's brother, Joseph Jr., settled in CA when he was 16 yrs. old in 1921. He had a large family, I believed, and built up a trucking business. (I believe one of his sons was named Frank, but I'm not sure--we never kept up with his family.) My mom's other brother was Robert Emmett. He died in 1970 without issue. Thanks again for the warm welcome...I shall certainly keep the list informed if I make any interesting discoveries. Walda
Hi Walda, I have done some research on the Garrigan's, also on the internet. We may have a connection. I have info on the 1850 NY federal census Allegany Co, Town of Birdsall. Father Thomas Garrigan, wife, Catherine, born Ireland, son James born Canada 1836, son Thomas, born 1841 in Pa, and Michael born in March 1850 in New York. So this may be the same family. They obviously moved around, I really do not have time right now, but will write in the near future, sometime this weekend. Good to hear from you. Hello, My name is Marilyn Jurrens from Yankton SD. My grandparents were Dave and Alvira Garrigan. Both are now dead but lived originally in Sioux City Iowa then Hartington NE. My family still consists of several Garrigan uncles and cousins and of course my mother was one and has the family bible with her that shows much of their history. If you would like to e-mail back and forth for more information I would be glad to find out more and get together with you. My mom's name was Mary Jean Garrigan. She had three brothers James, John and Dennis and one sister Marge. I had a great- uncle named Joe Garrigan. We should see if they are one and the same or somehow connected. This could be very interesting. I receive e-mail at home at mjurrens@msn.com. Write me sometime and let's talk about our possible family connection. Thank you. ----- Original Message ----- From: Walda Cameron <camfam@frontiernet.net> To: <GARRIGAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 25, 2001 9:44 AM Subject: [GARRIGAN] intro + Pittsburgh Garrigans > Hi-- > > My name is Walda Cameron, my mother's name was Mary Mildred Dolores > Garrigan. Elizabeth & Sharon, et al, In my researches, I have seen the name spelled Garagan, Garaghan, Gargan & Garragan, as well as Garrigan. In the past, spelling was not as standardized as it is today. Interestingly enough, my ancestor is Catherine Garrigan also! But, my Catherine came to the US by 1834. Her brother James was born in Canada in 1836. Don't forget that the Irish (esp. Catholics) often named all their girls Mary, then referred to them by their middle names. So, you may be looking for (officially) Mary Catherine Anne Garrigan/Gargon/Garaghan. Does your Catherine's marriage record give her parents names? Oftentimes it will, here in the States, tho it depends on the state. Or, if they were married in church, the church record may have additional information, including witnesses, who sometimes are relatives. And, I have found, in Catholic Church records, sometimes the parish where the person was born! Because the priest had to send back to that parish for sacramental records before performing the marriage. Hope this helps! Happy Hunting! When I look up this name in the IGI, Garrigan's and Gargan's also come up, and so I assume they are variations. I have had no real luck searching for my great grandmom "Catherine Anne Gargon" .
