    3. Dear Sandi and all Garrard contributors, Can't we find an appropriate site to transfer all of our extraordinary data? A genweb or rootsweb site or Clay Co.KY site or... Ideas, anyone? I have grouped all of my Price/Garrard researchers in an email Group Contact - Sandi and Gloria are both on it. What if we use this group, at least, to share what we have researched with each other? Everyone can add anyone they have connected with who also does research. I hate not sharing the hard earned data and knowledge I have gathered over the years. For instance:I have documented a chronology of Daniel Garrard and of Gabriel Price, sent to the Clay Co. site. I could [and probably did] send it to the Garrard site. I have chronologies on Harry Toulmin, James Garrard, some of Daniel and Lucinda's children, my great grandfather, William Luther Price and several of his siblings. I have begun a book of the Price Family of Sonora CA and their Ancestors from KY [and back] I will also do a volume on their descendents. Does anyone one want any of this? 2. Genealogy is a big business now isn't it? It is a shame that the rodents have chewed into all of the hard work people have done and were so willing to share. Guess we better get busy gathering what we want from any site we belong to. I am so sorry to see the Garrard site go. Thanks for all of the hard work and the time you have put into this and now it must go. Sug

    2. Cousins: I've deleted everything from the Clan Moncrief site on myfamily.com. Why? They not only want people to pay for the basic usage, they want to put the information we've put there on CDs that WE HAVE TO PAY FOR. And, that means that they will keep the information, which they said was private. I can't delete myself because they won't let me. There is no way they can get me to pay for an empty site! Also, with this new myfamily thing, I've found out that several Maupin cousins have been paying for the SAME extra space on our myfamily site. We didn't get double the space, just the same. Ance$try/myfamily.com people are not honest! They've raped information from Rootsweb, they now own to put on ance$try for people to pay to get the same info they can get from rootsweb. We might have another site where we can put information. I'll see since a Maupin cousin addressed that to our Maupin-L and the site is free and the information is private, they promised. Who knows? I'm so angry I could chew nails and spit tacks! Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I'm getting rid of our Garrard site. Go gather what you want NOW. Love, Sandi List Mom

Garrard, ALS tlgarrard @msn.com ALS is "Apprentice List Sitter" >> Dear Terry: You have done a wonderful job of list sitting, I must say. I'm quite impressed! I am thanking you from the bottom of my heart, cousin! I haven't had time to read all the Garrard email but will get to it. I wanted to bring y'all up to date on your Carter cousins. We moved to Frazier Park, California, home of Rootsweb, on 8 May. That night we had a light rain that turned into a light snow that lasted until noon the next day. It was simply beautiful and a welcome sign, I felt, to this wonderful area. I believe our Lord made this move possible because everything went so well. Our daughter,Kathleen, who moved with us, has a darling Siberian Husky, Curly, who had never seen snow before. Curly went ape! She couldn't get enough playing in it, eating it and rolling in it. So, that has to be in her genes. The Siberian is the oldest breed of domesticated dog and they act a lot like their wolf ancestors. They don't bark much and will talk a lot or howl. Our fireplace has a liner so that burning wood heats the house well. We so enjoyed that during the cold spell. Summer has hit and we are having up to 98ยบ temperatures here but it's dry heat so one doesn't mind. Our house is on the side of a mountain on a short dirt road. The earth here is a mix of granite rocks and boulders and the soil varies from sandy to loamy. We have a lot of lovely pine/fir trees around us and we can look up into the Los Padres National Forest from all sides as it surrounds our little community. Love seeing that forest as we sit on our front deck. There are several families of quail that think they own our road and are so cute when they go out in the late afternoon looking for bugs. Let a cat or dog walk on the road and the quail chatter at them and the animals actually veer out of the way. The people here are so friendly! We have 2,204 people and that includes the next little hamlet of Lake of the Woods, 3 miles west. We have no traffic signals and no street lights and the flat town speed limit is 25 MPH! YES! We must include some genealogy here. While I was off the net I heard from several Garrard/Williams/Maupin cousins in email. I was thrilled and emailed back and am hoping to hear soon. Again, Terry, bless you for helping me out. Love, Cousin Sandi Carter

    1. [GARRARD] GARRARDs in Early Virginia
    2. tlgarrard
    3. It is true that William Garrard of Stafford County, Virginia; his estranged brother "J" (possibly Reverend John Gerard); and their "cousins" Robert, John and Jacob, are ancestors to most of the Garrard population in this country. However, they did not introduce the name Garrard here. William and his brother may not even have been emigrants at all. Anna Russell des Cognets herself wrote that when the three cousins (Robert, John and Jacob) arrived in America, "they, or at least one of them, went to Stafford County where Colonel William Garrard had lived for years." Her grandson, Louis des Cognets, Jr. in his Postscript About the Garrard Family, wrote, "Recent (as of 1962) discoveries about Colonel William Garrard..suggest that he was born in Virginia, and that his family may have been an early one, arriving in the 17th century." They both recognize that Doctor Thomas Gerard spelled his name GARRARD after he moved from Maryland to Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1657. However, since his line did not survive, one may be lead to assume that after Doctor Thomas Garrard and his sons, there were no Garrards in colonial Virginia until William and John came along. That is apparently not the case. As more and more of the old records make their way into printed material and onto the Internet we are finding that there were Garrards in Virginia for at least decades before William and John entered the scene. For instance, in the book: Stafford County Wills, Administrations, Inventories, etc. 1664-1760; For the Period Covered by the Missing Record Books; From the Order Books still available, the old index, etc.; Contributed by John Bailey Calvert Nicklin, one finds the following will indexed: James Garrard, dec'd. 1690. The following records are said to have been extracted from the Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, 1680-1787, page 13, by the Virginia Chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. Births and Baptisms: Joseph son of James Garrard baptised 24 November, 1700. Judith dau of Judith Garrard baptised 24 November, 1700. Interestingly, the exact same records are said to have been extracted from the records of the Register of Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia, 1653-1812. I'm sure there is a replication of some kind here. But, I'm just as sure that at least one of these sets of records exists in the original records of one of the Parishs concerned. as a descendant of Governor James Garrard of Kentucky, I find it extremely interesting that there were apparently two James Garrards in Virginia prior to his birth. Most recently, while browsing GenCircles.com and looking for missing Garrards, I stumbled onto a Mary Garrard, born January 1676 in Stafford County, Virginia who married a John Trammall, who was born in Westmoreland County in February of 1675. 3. The Garrard Family is allied to the Hansborough Family through the marriage of Opal Eloise Garrarda descendant of Jacob Garrard (the emigrant) to John William Hansborough on June the 4th, 1932 in San Antonio, Texas. In his book, History and Genealogy of the Hansborough - Hansbrough Family, John W. Hansborough includes a section on the Garrard Family since the foregoing marriage related the two. After examining these references, Mr. Hansborough arrived at the following conclusions about the origin of the Jacob Garrard and related Garrard lines in this country. "A Postscript about the Garrard Family;" by Louis des Cognets, Jr.; printed 1962. "Governor Garrard of Kentucky, His Descendants and Relatives;" by Anna Russell des Cognets; printed 1898. "Register of Maryland's Heraldic Families;" by Alice Norris Parran; printed 1936. "Cavaliers and Pioneers;" by Nell Marion Nugent; printed 1934. "Garrard family members; interviewed during the period 1975-1980. "Thomas Garrard of Maryland and Virginia;" by David Spalding; St. Mary's Historical Society, Vol. 7, page 7. "Records of the Virginia Company;" by S. M. Kingsbury, Vol. 4, page 366. "Maryland Historical Society;" Vol. 46, pages 186-206. There were five Garrards who emigrated from England to America in the early and mid 1700s, more than likely the grandsons of Peter Garrard, the Hugenot, rather than descendants of Sir Thomas Gerard of Maryland. These were the brothers, John, Jacob, and Robert, and their first cousins, the brothers, William and John. About 1757, the three brothers left Virginia for the Carolinas. Jacob settled in North Carolina, and Robert and John went to South carolina. John later went to Georgia. Their cousins, William and John, remained in Virginia. John became the Reverend John Gerard, whose descendants migrated through Pennsylvania and down the Ohio River Valley, as Ter points out. William, again as Ter says, died in Stafford County, Virginia and his children, who hadn't already done so, moved to Kentucky shortly after. The Hansborough - Hansbrough book follows the migration of Jacob Garrard's descendants from North Carolina through Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and into Texas. I've not seen some of the references Mr Hansborough used and I'm really looking forward to my next research trip to see what they say. I'll gladly do lookups in this book if anyone feels there might be information here that will help them. Terry L. Garrard, ALS tlgarrard @msn.com ALS is "Apprentice List Sitter"

    3. Thanks Diane. I hadn't seen this particular Soundex before. Seems like there's always some little snag doesn't it? I notice that the 1900 Census has Molly [Mary] born in May of 1861 according to this Soundex while Mary's death record has her born on April 8, 1862. TL's birth date is questionable too. According to this he was supposed to have been born in 1861, this Soundex has it April, 1861. The 1860 Census, the first one he appears in, has him two months old in early July of 1860. Go figure. The James and Margaret [Pugh] Garrard family are listed on the 1860 Federal Census in the Falmouth Post Office District of Pendleton County, Kentucky. On actual census images they are on Page 116, line 21. On microfilm, the image of this page is in Series M653, Roll 392, Page 537. This census was taken on the 2nd of July, 1860. James is listed as a white male of 47 years of age, a Farmer. The value of his real estate is given as $1,300.00 and the family's personal property is valued at $300.00. That's pretty good for those times. Margaret is listed as a female of 38 years of age. There are listed on this census as: Mary J., a female age 15; William W., a male age 13; John M., a male age 10; Sarah M. a female age 7; George H. a male age 6; Jedith B., a male age 4; Rosana, a female age 2; and Thomas, a male age 2/12. Everyone in the family was born in Kentucky. Rosana's name is unintelligible on the census sheet so, I used the name listed in a birth record on Pendleton County's RootsWeb site. It can be accessed at www.rootsweb.com/~kypendle/18581859births.html. Back to the Soundex. It seems likely that Ina Lynch, the source of the information for TL's death certificate, is his eldest daughter, Ina. Don't you think?

    1. [GARRARD] The three different branches that use the Garrard spelling.
    2. Dear Garrard Family hunters, I have a tip for you all to keep in mined when searching for your line. There are three main branches that use the Garrard spelling that all came to Abt. 1725 to1750. And all at some point were in Stafford Co., Va. for awhile. I have also found a few minor lines that don't seem to link to the main three and most of these seem to have come to America after 1750. Line One. Colonel William Garrard, Born about 1713, location ?. appears in Stafford Co., Va. in the 1740's when he bought his farm from Augustine Washington (George's father). He died there Feb. 12, 1787 His wives were, 1, Unknown, 2. Mary Ann Naughty, 3. Elizabeth Moss. Much of his family moved to Ky. starting about 1782. Many of his grandchildren then moved to Missouri. Many others moved mainly North and West of Ky. Line Two. Jacob Garrard, B. 1720 England. Died 1776 in N. C. Married Mildred Waters in Stafford Co. Va. Most of his family moved south, many to Wilkes Co., Ga. Most of this line seemed to stay and move through the southern states. Line Three. Rev. John Gerard, (Gerrard, Garrard) Died Aug, 19 1787, Berkleley Co., W. V. Married to Mehetable Unknown. This line mainly moved in PA., Ohio, and Indiana. Some of Rev. John's lines changed the spelling to Garrard. Weather this was reverting it back to the original spelling is unknown. It is known that Rev. John Gerard and Gov. (Rev.) James Garrard knew each other in Stafford Co., Va. Rev. John influenced Gov.(Rev.) James into changing from the Acquia (Episcopal) Church to the Baptist Church. I hope this info helps you all to get a better feel as to what line maybe yours. I also hope that someday these three lines can be crossed checked with DNA. Good luck in your hunt. Terry L. Garrard Sr. , Cincinnati, Ohio

He is listed as the Head of the House; a widowed white male of 69 years of age. The only other person listed with him is a 40 year son, William E., also widowed. William is listed as a Cement Finisher. Their street address appears to be 244 Short Elm Street, Covington. This is the same general section of town that my great-grandfather, William W. Mine was Charles Lee Garrard and his was John Oney Garrard. I have very little in info on this Thomas Lewis Garrard born in 1861. There could have been five or more Thomas Lee Garrards all living in Ky. at that time. I have him also married to a Mary (Unknown). I did not know he died in Covington, Ky. What year did he died there? Did you know that they had a son Frank Garrard born in 1895, in Boston, Pendleton Co., Ky. And he died on Mar. 28, 1896 in Boston, Ky. There are a lot of Kings linked to our family from an other line from the Governor. Most of them lived in Cynthiana, Harrison Co., Ky. I got this King info from Kay Wither who lives in Ky. Email her at Kwithers@kih.net. Maybe she can tell you who this Richard King and Mary Buoy are. I don't have them in my file. Diane, please send me how you link to me so I can add it to my 100 year + updated of Anna Russell des Cognets 1898 book. Cousin Terry Lee

    3. Does any of this look familiar to anyone on the list? My GGF Sanders his fathers name is Robert E.,his wife is Mary E.his siblings are William B and Annie M.I found them in the 1900 Grant county census (In Covington, KY). Now I am looking for them. Now about the Garrards. There was a Thomas L who died in Kenton cnty Covington. The death certificate had him as a widower wife named Mary. I found a Mary Garrard who died in 1923 her parents are Richard King and Mary Buoy. Thom L. parents are listed as James Garrard and Margaret Pugh. If anyone can provide any information on the KY Garrards or the King or Buoy info, I would be very thankful. Thanks a million! Diane GaPeach@peoplepc.com
