Sandi, this is Terry Sr. in Cincinnati. My cousin Terry in Fl. is a great guy, though we only met once a few years ago. All that Marine Corps computer training of his is paying off. ( Ter great job) Sandi, I have been signed on to the L- Gerrard room for many years. Someone there told me that a new L- Garrard site was being started. Did you start the L-Garrard room? Anyway I was on a 12 year burn out on the tree when I heard this and only signed one about 3 months ago. I preached time and again to the Gerrard room never put complete trees on the net and never sent it to Family Tree Maker because they were just out to make money off your work. I wish I had signed on then to pass that info to you also. I am all for a really family member making money off their personal COMPLETE work. But I always gave the info free of that persons personal line by email. Sandi, like I would send you all I had on Daniel's of Clay County line but not the other lines of Governor James. I so give out help free on a certain hang up a person is is having in any line. But I someday hope to sell my complete work for a profit. My big regret is I did tell you to safeguard your info the same way as I did the L- Gerrard room 15 years ago. Sorry I came to late, Cousin Sandi

Sandi, Good timing! I just this minute finished validating the 140 images and descriptions that I copied from our Garrard site at MyFamily.com. You can whack that site whenever you are ready. I have everything that was out there to be gotten. Other than pictures, that wasn't a lot. I did not copy the Anna Russell des Cognets book. I still have those files. I'll add them to the CD. I couldn't agree with you more about how to handle the cost of getting copies of this stuff to people. I had in mind the cost of the CD, a mailer (or whatever) and postage. Before I get into that, I plan to take a little break. Terry
Terry: How are you doing with downloading our Garrard site? I have two Maupin cousins doing my two Maupin sites. My daughter will burn CDs for one site and a cousin will burn them for the other. All we are asking is the cost of the CD and mailing since there are tons of Maupins. Actually, I feel that's only fair. One really isn't paying for the information, just the CD and mailing. Can't beat that with a stick, I think. Best, Cousin Sandi Carter Frazier Park, California On the Hill

You see, I've got 2 Maupin sites to delete. A Maupin cousin is working on downloading one now. She just emailed to say she was doing it. Am trying to find someone else to do the other site. Bonnie said it was very tedious and time consuming. Bless you both for caring enough. It sure smelled and felt like rain here this afternoon. So far, nada. Sandi and all, Without system level access to the host computer at MyFamily.com I've adopted the following non-intrusive approach to getting the information from the Garrard site there. Anything that is text; like News, Recipes (our lineages), and Photo Descriptions; I am cutting and pasting into individual text files. To do this, place the cursor at the beginning of the text to be copied, press and hold down the left mouse button and move the cursor to the end of the text. This will highlight (also called select) the text to be copied. With the desired text highlighted and the mouse pointing to that text, click the right mouse button and and press the word Copy. Then open a text file and with the cursor inside that file's window press the right mouse button and click on Paste. This will replicate the text. Click File and Save As navigate to where you want the text file to be kept, name the file (check that the correct file type is displayed) and click Save. For Photo images, first display the image to be copied. After they are displayed, I've been clicking on images to change them to their original size to ensure the best choice of resolution to the viewer. With the image to be saved displayed, point to it and right click the mouse, then click Save Picture As. Next navigate to where you want to store the image, name the file (check that the correct file type is displayed-for images it should be JEPG (*.jpg) and click Save. I have created a folder named Garrard and in it created sub-folders for each area of the Garrard MyFamily site. I am storing things in the sub-folder that represents the area of MyFamily that it came from. In the case of photos, I will have two identically named files for each image except, one will be the image (a *.JPG file) and the will be the description (A *.txt file). When I've finished downloading everything and have checked it over I plan to use XCOPY to transfer the Garrard folder and all of its sub-folders to a CD. People will be able to view images using whatever image viewer they have and read or incorporate text information in whatever word processor they use. Just an update on my progress. I have 6 pages of images left to download. Getting this information this way is time consuming, tedious, and requires almost constant attention. I have been severley hampered today by strong thunder showers in our area. I take the precaustion of shutting my system down in these conditions. At the rate I am going, I expect to have all of the data from our site by tomorrow evening. I'm not sure how that fits your timetable. It's your call. Shall I continue? Terry

Hi Terry: Can you email this list and explain, if possible, how to download a myfamily site so that you can put the information on a CD? Thanks, Cousin Sandi Carter Frazier Park, California "On the Hill"
Sandi, I hope I get more responses from the L-Garrard Gang, as I find this genealogical quirkinesses interesting. Your decuctions are good: My mother was last in the line, born when her mother was 43. I, however am the 1st of her 7, born when she was 26. She did have a child at age 40 which means my 50 year old sister has a grandfather b. in 1859. Now that really is impressive, I think. My grandmother was 20 but her husband was 30 when they married. I don't know how to look at those photos and don't have time, now. So, I hope Terry captured it on CD so we can all buy a copy and share.
