Davies Sent: Saturday, September 06, 2003 11:36 AM Subject: Re: [GARRARD] Garrard pronunciation Hi all! I find this so interesting. I am from East Central Illinois where we pronounce it "Juh-rard" (thank you Gregg). Although I have heard my grandma say "Garrid", or something close to that. It is so hard to get out of the habits you have formed for 30+ years! But I'm trying! Cousin Shelly ----- Original Message ----- From: Greggory E. Davies To: GARRARD-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, September 06, 2003 6:58 AM Subject: [GARRARD] Garrard pronunciation Sandi, You make a good point. For years, before I ever actually exchanged actual mouth to ear conversation with anyone about the Garrard family, I assumed that our Garrard was pronounced "Juh - rard" as in beginning with the "J" sound, second syllable rhyming with "yard". Sorry but I'm no English major or diction expert, so use your imagination. Anyway, Cousin Kay Withers graciously straightened me out, and I thank her for it, but since she did I've had arguments over the years as to how it's pronounced. I've conditioned myself to say it properly though. 2. Terry, I have an extended connection to Rev. John Gerrard, Gerard, Garrard pronounced Ger- ard of Berkeley Co., Va....through the Goodin, Van Meter, Swank and Lee connections. The families intermarried for several generations to create an interesting weave of kin as they moved from VA and KY to MO. Janna

    1. [GARRARD] The black passed of Daniel Garrard
    2. Dear Cousins, Before I say anything, have you seen the show on the History Channel show about the Clay County Feud. They called the show "The Clay County War" Anyway, it was the worst feud in Ky. History. I am how hearing that it lasted about 100 years (From 1844 to 1941). World War 11 tended to stop it. Between 150 and 200 people died in the feud. It is thought that the seed of the feud started over a salt price war in the 1830's between the Whites and Garrards. The Garrards backed one side and the Whites the other. My movie script tells the details of the feud I am trying to sell. Love Ter in Cincinnati.

    3. Dear Talkin Ter, Cousin, you never let me know that Old Danny was a scoundrel. I sent you his Chronology but not much in there makes him one with the "blackest past". I love learning about the scoundrels in my ancestor gene pool and some of Dan's descendants can qualify - some closer to my own generation, even. So, please share anything about Daniel that you know that I haven't included in the chronology. Thanks. 1. [GARRARD] URGENT! WORM ALERT!
    2. Just now, many Internet users are experiencing problems with their computers shutting down abruptly. It is the result of a computer vulnerability and is being experienced by computer users around the world. It is due to a computer worm that scans computers checking to see if port 135 is open. If so, the worm takes advantage of the computer and shuts it down. If your computer has not been infected, you should go to one of the web sites shown below to update your anti-virus software or install a patch to prevent infection. Here is a Microsoft bulletin regarding this vulnerability: http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/ms03-026.asp Here is an update from Symantec: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/security/Content/8205.html Here is an update from McAfee: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp? id=description&virus_k=100547 If your computer becomes infected and gets shut down, you will need to follow these steps (you may want to print them for future reference): Unplug modem. Attention: PC users I felt this was important enough to send to all my lists. I've been hearing about it all day on the TV news. So, please read and beware! Best, Sandi Carter List mom Restart computer. Go to Start / Search / For Files and Folders. Confirm that Look in is set for C: drive. Search for files and folders named: "MSBLAST.exe" When computer finds the msblast file(s), right click on the file names and delete all copies of the file. Shut down the machine. Plug the modem back in. Restart the machine. Go directly to one of the web sites above and install the patch and/or update.

Please feel free to use it on your mailing lists or web pages if you deem it appropriate. Often, in genealogy, questions related to copyright arise. For several years, I've had a website where I tried to answer many of those questions and I've actively participated in the discussions on the copyright-l mailing list at RootsWeb. More recently, I've been writing articles based on what I've learned about copyright, which I am also posting online. My most recent article is intended to apply some basics of copyright to genealogy related issues. "Copyright Fundamentals for Genealogy," was specifically written to grant free reprint and redistribution rights. It is located at: http://www.stellar-one.com/copyright_concepts/fundamentals_gene.htm . Please feel free to use the article for any genealogy related use, such as: - your own website (with its look and feel), - email to others, - mailing list posting, - genealogy or historical society newsletter, - as a free handout at libraries The only restrictions that I have for its use is that its text is not edited or altered and, if used in a website, that a link is provided back to my copyright website. 3. Terry, I don't think I can do that, if you will take Wilma's line through her two daughters that should do enough, this is a funny family and with out permission from the lot I don't feel free to give their information for publication.
