As to keeping in touch with other Garrards in OK, I don't know. We had this conversation on the Maupin-L that I administer. There were a number of old Maupins who moved to Indian Territory from Clay CO, KY and some did keep in touch as they were first cousins, etc.. Cuz Sandi
Sandi Seems more than one Garrard made it to this part of the country. I find my William Anderson Garrard in Palo Pinto, TX in the 1870's, and his daughter, my Great Grandmother, was born either in Texas or Oklahoma. We can't find where yet. Interesting. I wonder if these cousins kept track of each other. Dutch Edmond, OK Sandi Carter <redfox5@sbcglobal.net> wrote: Sue: I must say I've been thrilled working with James Welch in regard to my Sidney M. Dear Sandi, I live in the same house I grow up in as a boy (1950). This was the small town of Springdale, 17 miles north of the Ohio river and downtown Cincinnati. It was still mostly farmland. We used to hunt the fields and woods and fish in the ponds. There were untouched creeks to catch frogs and crawdad's in. But from the 50's to the 80's there were no Canadians Geese, or Coyotes, or Deer. The area is now all built up with malls, and homes yet all three are now so thick they are pest. The geese dumping all over, the deer causing car wreaks, and the coyotes eating peoples pets. The fishing ponds are gone and are the fields to hunt. But I think the wild life is thumbing there nose at us now saying we are going to get the last laugh. You people got rid of all the hunting places so you have gave us safe haven. Terry
Cousins: SInce we live up in the California mountains in a very tiny village surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest, we get to see lots of wild animals we never saw during our 27 years in Simi Valley. I've yet to see a bear here but we do have to pick up our mail at the post office and are warned, when the bears are out and around, not to go there after dark. It's an area the bears like to visit at night. One morning a woman was jogging down the mail road that leads from here to the I-5 that is well traveled all the time. She had her dog with her and she was listening to her Walkman radio and a big bear was jogging right behind she and the dog! She wasn't aware so motorists were honking to get her attention. She didn't hear them either, but, all the honking spooked the bear and it took off across the brush to an upper part of the mountain. We do see coyotes going up and down our road at night and we hear them "laughing" around our area at night. One day, while taking our walk with our Siberian Husky, a beautiful red fox crossed the road ahead of us, stopped to look at us, and went on its way. Mountain lions hang around our area so we won't use the mountain paths for our walks, though we are told the hikes on them are simply beautiful. We'll stick to our dirt roads close to houses. It's quite beautiful up here away from civilization and using caution, a very safe, beautiful and quiet place to live. Best, Cousin Sandi
Hi Sug, Long time no see. We have had our first bear sighting near Cincinnati in over 100 years. It was first spotted last June about 25 miles south of the Ohio River in Boone Co KY when some woman hit something at nite while driving. She call the police and said it looked like a bear but the police where having a hard time believing her until the hair samples they sent to UK came back saying it was bear fir. It was seen one more time in late June. KY State Wildlife decided to leave it alone hoping it would move farther south away from the homes and busy roads. Two weeks ago it showed up again in the same area. This time they decided to put out a bear trap and move it to one of the state parks. They have yet to trap it. Terry L. Garrard Sr.
Dear Sandi, I think you will enjoy this VA-NORTH list. and anyone else who joins it. It has some very nice stories on it, too, like the Hillsville Couthouse Murders, back in the early 18's, someone posted it shortly after the shootout in Atlanta Court House, and it is very interesting, I already knew about them, but it was interesting reading it again, quite long, but good! Reminded me of some of the ones that were shown on TV of the Fueds awhile back in Clay County, KY. I have been to Hillsville and have seen the old Courthouse and the house they speak of, with a friend whose parents lived in the Mountains near Wytheville, VA. She showed me all around up there, as she knew my passion for Early American History. Yes, Lee is a very nice person, and a real storyteller, he has his own web site, too, and tells stories on it, you probably know about it since you are acquainted with him, he is very good at storytelling, is from Abingdon, VA, and will help anyone he can, just like you do, who is looking for information, if he knows it....so glad to have people such as you and he for Webmasters. You both are to be commended!! Thank you for your caring ways. Love, Cousin Jane

Hi All: There is a new list on the web now some of you may want to join and take part in, or at least visit the Archives, and I believe once you do, you will like it! It is only a little over a month since it was started, but already there are over 150 new subscribers, it is very informative, and since the GARRARDS started in Northern Virginia, it may pay to join up and see if someone knows something we all don't! Hope you like it, the person who runs it is much like Sandi, takes part in it along with the subscibers, the name of it is; VA-NORTH-L@rootsweb.com Hope you do like it, if you join it. You know that covers Stafford and Westmoreland, as well as Northumberland Counties, all of Northern Virginia, such as Fairfax, Fauquier, Prince William, Loudon, to name a few. Good luck! HI , have just e-mail a tad of info to James Welch. I will have to do some organizing before I can send very much. We live in Palisade, Colorado which is near Grand Junction almost to Utah. Have been off almost all afternoon because of thunder storms, had a terrible hail storm which is out of character for us. The reason that bear is over there is because of the peach orchards, he has been there for the last 4 or 5 years, the estimate of weight last year was 700 pounds. Later, Sug
Cousins: I just received the below email from James Welch. I'd asked him to lay out what he wanted and I'd share it with this list. ===== THE BOOK WILL HAVE 30 FAMILIES IN IT. ABOUT 200+ PAGES IT IS NOT A FAMILY HISTORY WITH STORIES .IT WILL HAVE BIRTH UP TO ABOUT 1940-50 . WILL TRACE SOME OF THE FAMILIES BEFORE THEY CAME TO CLAY AND WHEN THEY LEFT. THERE ARE 4 FAMILES THAT INVOVE THE GARRARD. 1. GARRARD-DANIEL 12 CHILDREN -GRAND CHILDREN,GREAT GRAND CHILDREN AND SOME GREAT GREAT GRAND CHILDREN. THE CUT OFF POINT BEING BIRTH AROUN 1940-50 (THERE ARE SOME AFTER THAT DUE TO LISTING ALL THE CHILDREN) 2.BURCHELL-THIS FOLLOW SOPHIA GARRARD ( TT DAU) AND HUSBAND JOSEPH BURCHELL 3.PRICE-THIS FOLLOW ELIZABETH GARRARD(TT DAU) AND GABRIEL PRICE 4.BLACK GARRARD.TWO BLACK FAMILYS USE THE GARRARD NAME( IT NOT MY POINT IN THE BOOK TO SAY IF THEY TOOK THE NAME OR IF THEY ARE RELATED BY BLOOD,I WILL LEAVE THAT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO FIND OUT) IT IS A FACT THAT SOME SLAVE OWNER GOT THERE FEMALE SLAVES PREGNANT.IT ODD OF ALL THE SLAVE HE HAD ONLY 2 TOOK THE NAME. BEST TO TELL PEOPLE TO EMAIL ME WITH SHORT LIST AS HOW THEY ARE RELATED TO DANIEL. BECAUSE I HAVE A LOT ON MOST OF THE 12 CHILDREN NOW SINCE I WILL BE GETTING THE WILLIAM FROM YOU STILL HAVE SOME HOLES BUT GETTING NEW INFO EVERY DAY OF THE 28 OTHER FAMILES ONLY THE GARRARD AND PRICE FAMILY HAVE I HAD OUTSIDE HELP WITH.AND IT IS GOING TO BE A BETTER BOOK FOR IT. I ONLY HOPE YOU ALL WILL STAY WITH IT AND DO A FAMILY HISTORY ON THE GARRARD. WITH STORIES ,PICTURES. ETC. I COULD ADD A LOT MORE TO IT SUCH AS BIRTH UP TO 1999. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST JAMES jwelch@kih.net ===== Best, Sandi

Sue Sug hasn't commented since she's back on the list so I didn't know if she knows about James Welch wanting info. I'm going to snail mail James what I have on Margaret Toulmin Garrard~Sidney M. Williams, their children and grandchildren SOON. I've emailed a few Williams cousins to see if they have more info since some twigs in that branch of my family are almost "leafless" as it were. Anyway, I have too many pages of info to email it and also want to include some photos of these old ones, that I do have. Cuz Sandi =)
Dear Sug, I, too, have a sieve for a brain. In fact I use that same phrase, a lot. You may have sent me your data but if so, it didn't get entered into my computer program, YET. My files are enormous and not precisely organized. So I may come across this information. Do we sound alike? Meanwhile, James is traveling to TN and to court houses, verifying data. He may be home by now. I am sure he'll be very pleased to hear from you. I am glad to be back in contact, also. I have neglected the Prices and Garrards for nearly 2 years as the "Book" I thought I was writing on this family became so overwhelming that I was paralyzed. I have now narrowed my focus and if I can stay within the newly imposed limits, it is doable. The focus is my earliest California Prices - a family with 8 children, the youngest of which was my grandmother. When this is done enough, I might embark on the Ancestors of William Luther Price which will put me back in Clay Co. KY. I have reams of data and clues on that, too. So I will need to refocus that story. Stay well. Spring should arrive sometime, soon. However, my New Hampshire friend says she doesn't expect to see a crocus until September. Grateful for cybespace cousin's friendship. Have I never shared this with you? My mind is like a sieve, what is going on today is top most and after today I file it and forget it until I need it again and then have to hunt sometimes. Hi Sue, I have not gotten the request you mentioned. I will have to look to see if I have any data for James Welch. Is your request it in the archives? I am going there tonight and read to see what I have missed. Lots I bet. Have been trying to compile a book of sorts for my husband's family reunion in June. I am not good at that sort of thing.
