Hi John: Good to hear from you. You are right about surnames. Some slaves took the surname of a good master. Some were related to that master through a black woman. Thomas Jefferson come to mind? We have run across black Maupins but they claim they are not related. Maybe not, maybe so. Might be a point of pride. I also helped a gal with one of my family surnames who is black. She couldn't get anyone else to help her because of her race. BTW, I've been meaning to let you know SBC dsl is 100% better than AOL EXCEPT I like AOL's email set up better. Sure don't miss it enough to go back. Anyway, you'd asked me to let you know and now I have. Best, Sandi white gal in the rainy California mountains
Sandi, Terry and List. Just in the past three days of 2005 I have come across people who are named Garrard and Brawner, and they proudly display they are African American persons. This may confuse many who forget the Slaves took the surnames of their Master. These DNA studies are all voluntary and for men it shows a better trail of ancestry probability. The women do not carry the gene passed down from their father as do males. There are DNA tests for females that do give traceable ancestry of female ancestry. I am not a big pusher of any DNA testing but maybe the men do want to know they are not of African American lineage, and others vice versa. When we see posts on Rootsweb or the USGenWeb sites we have little knowledge of the race of the posters and their data, unless persons claim their race in posts to give us a clue. Actually, I'm just not all that interested in getting involved with it but be sure to let us know whatever it is you are trying to find out from your test. Is anyone else interested in DNA? It seems to be "the thing" to do these days. Best, Sandi

I think you are on the right track because Harold's dad said that they came from the French Huguenot descent. They had gotten run out of France and they went to England. In the book " Governor James Garrard of Kentucky and his Descendants" it tells about this and how Sir William came to Stafford Co. Virginia from England. It also says some cousins named John, James and I believe it mentions a Peter, but they didn't settle where William did. James Garrard ( The governor) is the son of William. If you want to know more, send your address, phone # to me and I will try to explain to you what I know. Hello all. I may have the wrong line of Garrards / Gerrards; however, it is worth a shot. I am a descendant of Rev John Gerrard b. c 1720, d. 17 Aug 1789. I am related through his first son William. Rev Gerrard was the pastor of the Opeckon (MIll Creek)Baptist Church in what is now Called Gerrardstown, WV. His second son, Rev John Jr went to Hardin Co, KY with Jacob Van Meter in 1780. He was the first pastor of the Regular Baptist Church of Severns Valley organized in June 1781. John Jr disappeared while hunting during the speing of 1782. It is thought that he was killed by Indians. I have not been able to identify where the Gerrards came from. Some leads point to PA; others point to NY or NJ. Another points to Pierre (Peter) Gerrard, a Hugenot, who escaped persecution by the Catholics in France. If anyone has information on this family, I would greatly appreciate it. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FEY.2ACEB/51.1 Message Board Post: Your post is rather old - but, if still interested, here is what I know . . . Rev John Jr is the son of Rev John Gerrard b. c1720 in Frederick, VA, d. 17 Aug 1787 in Gerrardstown, WV. John Sr is my g-g-g-g-great grandfather. (Looking for info on his ancestry) John Jr married Susanna (Susan) Van Meter c1758. They arrived in Severns Valley in Hardin Co KY in the spring of 1780. He was part of a party led by Jacob Van Meter. The colony in Severns Valley consisted of about 100 men, women and children. In 1781, this group built the Severns Valley Baptist Church (organized 17 Jun 1781) and Rev John Gerrard was its first pastor. In March of 1782, John Jr went hunting and never returned. It is believed that he was killed by Indians. Hope this posting finds you and ihas been helpful. Steve Gerrard, Tulsa, OK gerrard@bicinc.us

Hi All Cousins: I've been so busy with my cemetery lists, trying to update, add stone photos and obits that I have really been remiss in checking my email! Please forgive me! Sug, I sure hope you are feeling better. I know this time of the year is very hard for me without my husband. I just can't wait for the holidays to pass since they are very stressful for me. All the rootsweb lists I run or are subscribed to are just about dead. Get an email now and then. I would think things will pick up after the first of the year. I want to wish you all a very HAPPY AND HOLY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! Best, Cuz Sandi

Recently I put together a CD of all the Fitzpatrick military photos I've collected over the years for my family. I'd love to do the same if we could gather enough Garrard photos. Want to do that for my Maupin family, also. I've kept in touch with James Welch, who compiled that last book our Clay CO, KY Garrard family was in, as I'm helping him with my Clay CO Maupins. I called him last week and we had a very pleasant conversation. He just keeps finding more Maupins and along the way some more Garrards! Love, Sandi
