I'm not an expert but I can offer these points. The portion of Aiken County that now borders Augusta on the other side of the Savannah River was part of Edgefield District in the 1840s. The Augusta Canal was under construction at the time and finished about 1845. There may have been other canals in the area that I don't know about. Edward J. Cashin's book, The Brightest Arm of the Savannah, is a history of the Augusta Canal and includes a chronology of events in its construction. I don't subscribe to the Edgefield and SC lists. If someone thinks this is of interest, can you please forward it?
