Fletcher dorothy010@ameritech.net June 19, 2005, 2:09 pm Augusta Chronicle October 25, 1912 Frank Green Driving at a high Rate of Speed Struck Dr. J.M. Caldwell's Machine, Seriously Disabling It----Green's Car Damaged Also. A real smash-up between two automobiles occurred on Broad street in front of the Bonita Theater, last night about 10 o'clock, in which both machines were badly disabled. The automobiles were owned by Frank Greene and Dr. J.M. Caldwell, the former being held at the police barracks, charged with causing the smash-up. Green, driving a Warren touring car, was going east on Broad Street, at a rate of about thirty miles per hour. As he crossed Jackson he sightly struck a machine that was turning into Broad Street from Jackson., which burst his right front tire, and broke his axle, causing his car to skid around to the right and run head on into Dr. Caldwell's car, which was standing idle in from of the Bonita Theater, knocking it several feet on the sidewalk. The owner of the automobile that was struck first by Green's car could not be learned, and little damage was done to it, according to witnesses. Besides Greene, there were two negro men in the car with him, when the accident occurred, who jumped out and ran. The car owned by Dr. Caldwell had two wheels crushed, front axle sprained and both left fenders smashed in. The whole front end of Green's car was smashed in and the damage will amount to over $100.00. Both cars were so badly damaged that it took over an hour to remove them from the street. Though ill for several weeks it was hoped that her malady was not fatal, but in vain, for the fell destroyer seized her for his prey, just when life was holding out for her its pleasant prospect. Married only about a year she was still in the joys of the honeymoon. To her bereaved husband who had begun to know the sweetness and gentleness of her disposition, the blow came as a great shock. 3. Special Collections at Reese Library, Augusta State University, has two or three copies. It's 52 pages long. The address was given before the Georgia legislature in July 1883 and printed in 1884. The copies don't circulate but contact Carol Waggoner-Angleton (cwaggone@aug.edu). Maybe she can photocopy it for you. I used the pamphlet last week for an article on Governor Jenkins. What's your interest? You can answer off-list if you want.
