    3. I am cleaning up my desk and filing away info. after checking to see if it is entered of matches folks and came across this obit I received a couple of weeks ago. I am not sure I posted it to the list. Aug. Chron. Obit., Sun., 20 Jan 1929 MRS. MARY LOU POWELL DIED HERE YESTERDAY Mrs. Mary Lou Coursey Powell, age 19, died last night at the residence, 1482 Broad Street, after an illness of one week. Funeral services will be held at the residence this afternoon at 5 o'clock. Rev. E. C. Sheridan will officiate and interment will be in West View cemetery. Mrs. Powell is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim R. Coursey; four brothers, Euel, Herbert, Dan and Bunion Coursey; two sisters, Mrs. Jack Fields and Miss Bessie Coursey. This seems to fit earlier info. sent to me by Pat Morris and my speculations from my notes of Mary Lou Powell: "One of my g'father's brothers John Aaron ( Johnnie) Powell (1877-1948) married MARY LOU COURSEY. That's all I have..just the name. When my gg'father Starling Elder Powell died and his estate was finally settled in Jan. 1939, Johnnie's portion was given to him in care of one of his sisters. So I am guessing he was ill or? Perhaps he was no longer married to Mary Lou by this time. I am assuming that Johnnie was named for his maternal grandfather, John Aaron? Floyd, Sr. who was killed in the Augusta, GA area ca 1860 when a cotton bale fell on him." [SPECULATION - could the two Mary Lou Courseys be the same person???] I think it is. She fits into the James R. Coursey m. Mary McClendon family that I was working on earlier about whom I bugged the list and got some new info. This is what I have on the two linages. Would welcome new info. or corrections on the info. below. 1 James R. I thought maybe you had the actual will.>> I really wasn't thinking when I wrote that, but the will is public property so I will most definitely get it from the courthouse and post it. I am helping a lady do some research and she is linked to the Thomas family. It appears that the person she asked me to research, Landon Thomas, was a nephew of Emily Tubman and visited her quite often before moving here. He and his father were present at her death as were other family members and friends. She seems to have been an extraordinary woman. I will post anything I find on the various lists.... Richmond and Edgefield for sure. More later. I can't get to the courthouse for a few days.

    3. She may be the Tubman for whom Tubman School is named. All the girls went to Tubman to high school, and the boys went to Richmond Acadamy. Unless they were Catholic and attended Catholic High, but I don't know when that was started. My dad went to Richmond Academy and my aunts attended Tubman in the late 30s and early 40s. I think Tubman now is used as a part of the Augusta Arts program, and not as a school, but I am not sure of that. Richmond Academy is still a school. JENKINS Ex-Governor Charles J. Jenkins, died at his residence, near Augusta, on the 14th inst. Well may Georgia mourn the loss of her honored son. From the Augusta Chronicle & Constitutionalist we get this brief sketch of the life of him who is now no more: "Charles J. Jenkins was born in the county of Beaufort, S. C., on January 6, 1805. His father moved to Jefferson County, Ga., in 1816, and Charles the son, was educated partly at the Georgia University and partly at Union College, Schenectady, N. Y., where he graduated in 1824; afterward studied law and opened an office in the city of Augusta, Ga. In 1830, he was elected to the legislature, in 1832 was elected Attorney-General of the State, which position he resigned before the expiration of his term of office, and then he was again returned to the Legislature in 1836, which position he continuously held from 1836 to 1850, ranking amongst the ablest and most eloquent of the House during all that period, and being speaker thereof whenever his party was in the majority. In politics he was reared in the Jeffersonian States Rights School, but supported Harrison for President in 1840, and Clay in 1844. He was a member of the Union Convention of the State in 1850, and as chairman of the committee on resolutions, was the author of the celebrated Georgia platform adopted by that body. In 1860 he was appointed one of the Judges of the Supreme Court of the State to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Hon. Linton Stephens. This position he held until the close of the war. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention of the State called under the proclamation of President Johnson in 1865, in which body he acted a prominent part, and in the same year was elected Governor of the State without opposition under the new Constitution so formed. This position he held until he was superseded by Gen. Thos. H. Ruger of the United States Army, who was appointed Provisional Governor in 1868 under the reconstruction acts of Congress. He also had been one of the most active and influential members of the board of trustees of the State University since 1839. Same issue Ex-Governor Charles J. Jenkins is dead. He was a grand old man. He served more than one generation well, and now he sleeps the sleep of the just. There was not a stain upon his life, there are no mysteries in his public record, and his fame and his future are secure. Macon Telegraph. 1. Re: {not a subscriber} Re: Laurens Co. Deeds - Old Edgefield Dist families.
    2. Response to Billie Jones---another GOODE document. There appears to have been more than one Mackness/Mackerness/Magnus? GOODE/GOOD, as far as I can tell from the various documents of this name, and hopefully someone who is actually descended from this line might be able to gather all the documents and sort them out into clear lines. [I have no indication that I am a descendant of this line, but think the more documentation there is for every line can only help other researchers. So I just post whatever I can find, whether it's actually MY line or not.] This is so great, this exchange of research---please, everyone, remember that something YOU might have in your own research, or found on the same book page as information you have gotten for your own line, might help someone else. Look back through the documentation you have accumulated. Are there documents for other lines there? If so, POST IT! Let's all help each other out as much as possible... :-) My own families in Edgefield were MUCH later than what I have posted to this list from the Laurens Deed Book A-D, but it may help someone else, I hope. My own lines were HOWERTON, TRAYLOR [ca. 1795-1819], COVINGTON [ALWAYS Covingtons and Howertons since 1663!], CURRY, PHENIX/PHEONIX/FENIX, and almost certainly ROPER [almost certain connection in Dinwiddie & Brunswick & Lunenburg Cos., VA.] [Just so everybody realizes & remembers; if any one of you spot any documents in Edgefield for any of my families, I'd so appreciate having good documentation for any of them.{For instance, it appears that John TRAYLOR, younger brother of my Martha Traylor HOWERTON, m. Frances JONES, the daughter of Thomas JONES. Any JONES information from Edgefield might help us, if anyone has any documents for that surname in Edgefield.}] Pooling resources and research will almost certainly move us all ahead. So let's help each other, okay!
